Speaker: Dr. Marc Fabri, senior lecturer, Leeds Beckett University. This talk will introduce the challenges and opportunities many young autistic students encounter during their higher education journey. Details and findings will be presented from two EU-funded research projects: Autism&Uni which focused on the transition into university, and IMAGE which is currently ongoing and focuses on the transition out of university, into the workplace. Both projects have a strong digital angle with the design of online toolkits specifically aimed at autistic students. Through a participatory design approach, students were directly involved in conception and production of these digital tools. Leeds- Beckett University have learnt a lot about the skills and preferences autistic students have, and how technology can help them fulfil their aspirations. Along the way pre-conceptions were thoroughly challenged. Both projects champion two important principles: Firstly, a strength-based view of autism that focuses on skills and abilities rather than deficits. And secondly a universal design approach to learning that provides choices, depending on an individual's preferences and abilities. This puts the onus on universities to consider how established practices and technologies must change to fully support autistic students in an inclusive way - and any other group of students.

Visiting Lecture: Plymouth College of Arts In this first of our series of visiting lectures, Debbie Holley, Professor of Learning Innovation at Bournemouth University challenges us to explore the boundaries of the digital, while still ensuring that our own digital health and wellbeing is protected, along with that of our students. Debbie will share examples of her work leading teams embedding creativity (online) through the disciplines, with considerations for the health and wellbeing for all. We will conclude the talk with a panel discussion about how we may like to take some of the ideas forward. The event will be recorded, and the slides shared. Debbie has requested that you bring along your SMART (internet connected) mobile phones, but emphasises this workshop is suitable for all. Dr Ben Goldsmith, from the Bournemouth University learning technology team, will join us to talk about what is possible at the panel! Debbie is a National Teaching Fellow, a Principle Fellow of AdvanceHE and on the JISC student experience experts panel. She has research interests in digital competence frameworks, augmented reality, virtual reality and simulations. Ben is a Learning Technologist at Bournemouth University and a Fellow of AdvanceHE. His research interests include digital and media literacy, the use of media and digital content and tools in secondary and tertiary education, and the engagement of critical theory with approaches to learning. The purpose of the Project is to examine the relationship between the use of information and communi¬cation technologies (ICT) and Learning in higher education. During the last two decades higher education institutions have invested heavily in information and communication technologies (ICT). ICT has had a major impact in the university context, in organization and in teaching and learning method. It is difficult and maybe even impossible to imagine future learning environments that are not supported, in one way or another, by Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). There is, in other words, a widespread belief that ICTs have an important role to play in changing and modernizing educational systems and ways of learning. The impact of the ICT on learning can be approached in different ways. There is no single concept of learning through the use of ICT. Many different types can be envisaged: computer assisted learning, web-learning, computer-classes, online training, distance education, eLearning, virtual learning, digital training, projector in classroom, microphone, use of Power point slide etc. Consequently, its impact on the learning process should encompass not only traditional learning outcomes but also the use of ICT by teachers (teacher training), the organizational use of ICT by education and training institutions, and, last but not least, the impact of ICT-enabled education on, for instance, personal development, confidence and self esteem.

The nature of education, interaction, and engagement is rapidly changing as new modes of communication and technologies enter the hands of learners. While teachers are the greatest lynchpin for keeping students and classrooms engaged, there are many features tech tools can employ to help. For maximum engagement, technology tools in learning must appeal to social motivation, have opportunities for creativity, personalize the content and experience, engage a mentor or teacher, and provide interactivity and immediate feedback. Measuring this engagement must combine insights from both qualitative and quantitative data.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence. The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth. Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration. The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority. Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages. Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024 Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error. Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials. This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
