In 2019 ACODE ran a survey to understand where Australasian HE Institutions were up-to in relation to establishing micro-credentials. At that point less than a quarter had even a policy in place. Since then the effort towards microcredentialing has increased. The 2020 ACODE survey reveals that, if not already well-underway, institutions are developing or seriously considering microcredentialing strategies. A number of interesting trends emerged that this presentation will explore, such as, several universities are working on ways to integrate existing short course systems into award course systems. Others are planning to offer micro-credentials to businesses and government in a commercial capacity. It was noted that professional practice degrees are a new space being explored to tap into industry partnerships. There is also consideration of co-delivery with VET providers. In all this, many indicated that they needed to rethink their operating structures to best service micro-credentials in their various permutations.

This is my mind map of the Morning Buzz session entitled "Meeting the Needs of the Modern Learner" at the 2015 Learning Solutions Conference & Expo in Orlando, Florida. This session was guided by Carol Leaman of Axonify. One of the interesting facts I took away from the session was that the modern learner only has 1% of the work week to focus on learning and development. Additionally, the benefits of microlearning or learning in short chunks was discussed. What resonated with me was that there is a risk associated with the lack of depth in "snack-sized" learning but it needs to be substantive to mitigate the risk.

Just like every major corporation today, nonprofits and governments have more data than ever before. And just like those corporations, they are eager to tap into the power of their data. But the social sector doesn’t have the same resources to attract talent. Jeff Hammerbacher, Chief Scientist at Cloudera, put it best: “The best minds of my generation are thinking about how to make people click ads. That sucks.” At DrivenData our goal is to make the world suck a little less by empowering impact organizations to get the most from their data. Peter Bull, co-founder at DrivenData, will speak on the ways in which statistics, computer science, and machine learning can be applied to the challenges in the social sector. The talk will address both the big-picture context of the data for good movement, and an in-depth case study of the methods which won DrivenData’s recent machine learning competitions. It’s an exciting time for people who love data: methods are improving, computational costs are decreasing, storage and transport are cheaper, and the talent pool is growing. I’ll present the new knowledge discovery tools we are building at Diffeo. Unlike traditional search engines that use keywords, Diffeo provides an in-browser knowledge base that accelerates information gathering about people, companies, chemical compounds, cyber events, or other real world entities. I’ll describe how Diffeo uses active learning to encourage long and deep user interactions in order to recommend new content for in-progress articles. As you write, the search results get better and more interesting, because the system can see more precisely which entity you mean and which you don’t (disambiguation) and also what you don’t know yet about the entity (discovery). Finally in this presentation I’ll describe our experience organizing the Text REtrieval Conference (TREC) on Knowledge Base Acceleration (KBA) and Dynamic Domain (DD) which are pushing the state of the art in knowledge discovery on large streams. I’ll show you how to access the largest corpus of streaming text data ever released for public evaluations.

Notebooks have proven to be effective tools used in Data Science, providing convenient packages for what Don Knuth coined as "literate programming" in the 1980s: code plus exposition in markdown. Results of running the code appear in-line as interactive graphics -- all packaged as collaborative, web-based documents. Some have said that the introduction of cloud-based notebooks is nearly as large of a fundamental change in software practice as the introduction of spreadsheets. O'Reilly Media has been considering the question, "What comes after books and video?" Or, as one might imagine more pointedly, what comes after Kindle? To that point we have collaborated with Project Jupyter to integrate notebooks into our content management process, allowing authors to generate articles, tutorials, reports, and other media products as notebooks that also incorporate video segments. Code dependencies are containerized using Docker, and all of the content gets managed in Git repositories. We have added another layer, an open source project called Thebe that provides a kind of "media player" for embedding the containerized notebooks into web pages

Indigenous History Month Art Activity In June 2022, we got together virtually to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Month by working our way through a month-long art project. Each person was to think of an Indigenous artist they admire, research the artist and their work, and create a piece of art for themselves influenced by the artist they had chosen. Throughout the month we presented on these artists and why we connect to their art and discussed important topics like appropriation vs. appreciation. We learned a lot about Indigenous artists in Canada and about each other and ourselves. The art project allowed people to connect with their heritage as well as Indigenous peoples; it was as much a research and art project as it was a team-building and self-reflection activity.
