1. INTRODUCTION
Acubis Technologies (Acubis) was engaged by a coal mine to conduct a one week study of traffic
behaviour on an access road. The road was used by both heavy and light vehicles – 24 hours a day.
Acubis deployed Intercepta Smart Radar Camera to monitor vehicle traffic over the trial period to
provide the mine site with traffic data, including detailed information on excessive speed.
It should be noted that this report was prepared by Acubis for a Coal Mine (“the customer”) in
accordance with the scope of work and specific requirements agreed between Acubis and the
customer. This sample report is an example only, highlighting some of the results from the Intercepta
trial.
2. BACKGROUND
Developed by Acubis, Intercepta Smart Radar Camera is a mobile trailer unit designed to monitor,
display and record vehicle speed and traffic data across single and multi lanes, such as haul roads.
Intercepta has a sophisticated radar camera integrated onto an intelligent software platform. The visual
display provides immediate driver feedback whilst excessive speeding alerts are sent to management
in near real time. Advanced number plate detection and sophisticated reporting of traffic statistics and
infringement data is available through the SAMS web application via mobile technologies or site
networks.
3. METHODOLOGY
Intercepta was deployed in two locations over the seven day period. Intercepta was positioned on the
side road facing north to ensure maximum sunlight to maintain battery levels and to ensure sufficient
mobile signal. The LED display was on, allowing drivers to see their vehicle speed in real time.
Traffic statistics were acquired by analysing oncoming traffic using a speed radar, effective for speeds
between 4 km/h and 321 km/h, and for distances over 95 m and up to 450 m. Approaching vehicle
speed data was gathered via a radar interface. Video footage of vehicles exceeding the speed limit by
more than 20 km/h were reviewed and analysed. To ensure consistent statistics and averages, any
speeds recorded less than 20 km/h (the ‘speed floor’) were excluded from the results.
3.1 Deployment
The below configuration was set for the duration of the trial.
Setting Value Comment
Spy Mode Off LED sign to provide driver speed feedback in real time.
Activated for normal operation, but can be disabled to appear inactive.
Speed Tolerance 5 km/h In an 80 km/h zone, infringements were generated for any vehicle
exceeding 85 km/h.
Speed Floor 20 km/h No recordings below this speed (excludes pedestrians, cyclists and
movement of trees).
Radar Timeout 2 seconds Indicates the required gap between two trailing vehicles.
If vehicles are travelling closer than 2 second apart (i.e. tail gating), they
may be reported as one passing vehicle.

Results and analysis of data collected indicated:
 Speeding is an obvious issue on this site. Detailed analysis of vehicle type showed that
92% of light vehicles exceeded the speed limit.
 The worst speeding offence was recorded at 6 am in which the light vehicle driver was
recorded travelling at 124 km/h – 44 km/h over the speed limit.
 A large number of non-site based personnel, (i.e. contractors) received speed
infringements.
 All drivers reacted to the LED speed display and slowed down on approach to Intercepta,
however, many still exceeded the speed limit.
 Total speeding infringements and average speed fell at the second location, proving that
Intercepta was effective in modifying driver behaviour.
 Most speeding infringements (72%) occurred in daylight hours (between 06:00 and 18:00).
 Between 17:00-18:00 on weekdays, there were more vehicles on the road (‘peak hour’),
with the highest number of infringements recorded.
 Average speed data provides valuable insight into driver behaviour and shows a trend of
non-compliance to the speed limit.
 Drivers of heavy vehicles maintained safe speeds and did not receive any infringements.
 Drivers of light vehicles travelled closer together (i.e. tail gating) and frequently exceeded
the speed limit.
4.2 Road Traffic Statistics
Hourly vehicle counts provide insight into road usage, including changes in numbers of vehicles over
the day and night. Between 1 and 46 vehicles were recorded in an hour, with maximum vehicles
recorded travelling around 6 pm. Traffic was predictably lighter (40-60%) on weekends compared to
weekdays.

4.3 Average Speeds
Average speed data, (i.e. the average of maximum vehicle speed per hour), provides safety officers
with valuable information on times of day and night when the speed limit is exceeded. Average speed
above 80 km/h demonstrates non-compliance to the speed limit and is a serious behavioural issue for
site. Further investigation of the data showed that the average speed of heavy vehicles was 50 km/h,
with 100% compliance to the speed limit.
Figure 3: Average vehicle speed per hour during the trial
4.4 Infringement Statistics
Infringement counts provide insight into excessive speeding during each 24 hour period. More than 3
infringements per hour were generally recorded between 4 pm and 8 pm. Up to seven infringements
were recorded in one hour, with an average of 29 infringements per day.

4.5 Worst Offenders
Excessive speeding footage from Intercepta was viewed and the worst two offenders identified.
Intercepta was effective in capturing vehicle registration plates (removed for the purpose of this report),
allowing mine management to identify actual drivers exceeding the speed limit. The maximum speed
recorded was 124 km/h at 6 am – 44 km/h over the speed zone. This particular vehicle slowed down,
but was still speeding 27 km/h over the speed limit as it passed the Intercepta trailer. A small number
of drivers contributed to multiple infringements, including non-site personnel.
Figure 5: Worst speeding infringement – 44 km/h over the speed limit
The second worst offender was captured speeding at 5.45 pm, driving at 113 km/h. Despite being
dark, Intercepta was able to capture the vehicle registration plate. The driver responded to the visual
speed display on the Intercepta trailer and slowed to 71 km/h, which was safely below the speed limit.

5. RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS
The Intercepta trial was highly effective in generating traffic data and understanding driver behaviour
on this mine site. Video footage showed that drivers slowed down after seeing the LED speed display,
proving Intercepta is effective in modifying driver behaviour. Incorporating Intercepta footage into WHS
training or introducing infringement penalties will encourage drivers to slow down further, to comply
with safe speed limits.
Speeding is an obvious problem for drivers of light vehicles on this site. HSE managers can use
Intercepta data and reports to monitor speed compliance of light vehicles over time, including non-
mine vehicles. Engineering or other solutions may be considered to slow down drivers – especially
between 9 pm and 7 am.
Further monitoring is required to identify repeat offenders and achieve speed compliance. It is
suggested that further use of one or more Intercepta trailers alongside a program of identifying
problem drivers would improve safety for all road users.
Monitoring entrance gates or high risk locations will provide valuable data on both site personnel and
contractors. This insight would be beneficial when implementing driver safety training for visitors and
contractors.
Intercepta is proving to be an effective safety device, providing HSE and mine managers with valuable
data to improve safety for all road users.
Intercepta Smart Radar Camera is available for
short or long term hire arrangements on single
lane or multilane (haul) roads.

It should be noted that this report was prepared by Acubis for a Coal Mine (“the customer”) in accordance with the scope of work and specific requirements agreed between Acubis and the customer. This sample report is an example only, highlighting some of the results from the Intercepta trial. 2. BACKGROUND Developed by Acubis, Intercepta Smart Radar Camera is a mobile trailer unit designed to monitor, display and record vehicle speed and traffic data across single and multi lanes, such as haul roads. Intercepta has a sophisticated radar camera integrated onto an intelligent software platform. The visual display provides immediate driver feedback whilst excessive speeding alerts are sent to management in near real time. Advanced number plate detection and sophisticated reporting of traffic statistics and infringement data is available through the SAMS web application via mobile technologies or site networks. 3. METHODOLOGY Intercepta was deployed in two locations over the seven day period. Intercepta was positioned on the side road facing north to ensure maximum sunlight to maintain battery levels and to ensure sufficient mobile signal. The LED display was on, allowing drivers to see their vehicle speed in real time. Traffic statistics were acquired by analysing oncoming traffic using a speed radar, effective for speeds between 4 km/h and 321 km/h, and for distances over 95 m and up to 450 m. Approaching vehicle speed data was gathered via a radar interface. Video footage of vehicles exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h were reviewed and analysed. To ensure consistent statistics and averages, any speeds recorded less than 20 km/h (the ‘speed floor’) were excluded from the results. 3.1 Deployment The below configuration was set for the duration of the trial. Setting Value Comment Spy Mode Off LED sign to provide driver speed feedback in real time. Activated for normal operation, but can be disabled to appear inactive. Speed Tolerance 5 km/h In an 80 km/h zone, infringements were generated for any vehicle exceeding 85 km/h. Speed Floor 20 km/h No recordings below this speed (excludes pedestrians, cyclists and movement of trees). Radar Timeout 2 seconds Indicates the required gap between two trailing vehicles. If vehicles are travelling closer than 2 second apart (i.e. tail gating), they may be reported as one passing vehicle.

  • 6. Sample Report Mining Industry Intercepta Trial Report.docm 23 Sep 2016 3 Results and analysis of data collected indicated:  Speeding is an obvious issue on this site. Detailed analysis of vehicle type showed that 92% of light vehicles exceeded the speed limit.  The worst speeding offence was recorded at 6 am in which the light vehicle driver was recorded travelling at 124 km/h – 44 km/h over the speed limit.  A large number of non-site based personnel, (i.e. contractors) received speed infringements.  All drivers reacted to the LED speed display and slowed down on approach to Intercepta, however, many still exceeded the speed limit.  Total speeding infringements and average speed fell at the second location, proving that Intercepta was effective in modifying driver behaviour.  Most speeding infringements (72%) occurred in daylight hours (between 06:00 and 18:00).  Between 17:00-18:00 on weekdays, there were more vehicles on the road (‘peak hour’), with the highest number of infringements recorded.  Average speed data provides valuable insight into driver behaviour and shows a trend of non-compliance to the speed limit.  Drivers of heavy vehicles maintained safe speeds and did not receive any infringements.  Drivers of light vehicles travelled closer together (i.e. tail gating) and frequently exceeded the speed limit. 4.2 Road Traffic Statistics Hourly vehicle counts provide insight into road usage, including changes in numbers of vehicles over the day and night. Between 1 and 46 vehicles were recorded in an hour, with maximum vehicles recorded travelling around 6 pm. Traffic was predictably lighter (40-60%) on weekends compared to weekdays. • 7. Sample Report Mining Industry Intercepta Trial Report.docm 23 Sep 2016 4 4.3 Average Speeds Average speed data, (i.e. the average of maximum vehicle speed per hour), provides safety officers with valuable information on times of day and night when the speed limit is exceeded. Average speed above 80 km/h demonstrates non-compliance to the speed limit and is a serious behavioural issue for site. Further investigation of the data showed that the average speed of heavy vehicles was 50 km/h, with 100% compliance to the speed limit. Figure 3: Average vehicle speed per hour during the trial 4.4 Infringement Statistics Infringement counts provide insight into excessive speeding during each 24 hour period. More than 3 infringements per hour were generally recorded between 4 pm and 8 pm. Up to seven infringements were recorded in one hour, with an average of 29 infringements per day. • 8. Sample Report Mining Industry Intercepta Trial Report.docm 23 Sep 2016 5 4.5 Worst Offenders Excessive speeding footage from Intercepta was viewed and the worst two offenders identified. Intercepta was effective in capturing vehicle registration plates (removed for the purpose of this report), allowing mine management to identify actual drivers exceeding the speed limit. The maximum speed recorded was 124 km/h at 6 am – 44 km/h over the speed zone. This particular vehicle slowed down, but was still speeding 27 km/h over the speed limit as it passed the Intercepta trailer. A small number of drivers contributed to multiple infringements, including non-site personnel. Figure 5: Worst speeding infringement – 44 km/h over the speed limit The second worst offender was captured speeding at 5.45 pm, driving at 113 km/h. Despite being dark, Intercepta was able to capture the vehicle registration plate. The driver responded to the visual speed display on the Intercepta trailer and slowed to 71 km/h, which was safely below the speed limit. Figure 6: Second worst speeding infringement – 33 km/h above the speed limit
  • 9. Sample Report Mining Industry Intercepta Trial Report.docm 23 Sep 2016 6 5. RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS The Intercepta trial was highly effective in generating traffic data and understanding driver behaviour on this mine site. Video footage showed that drivers slowed down after seeing the LED speed display, proving Intercepta is effective in modifying driver behaviour. Incorporating Intercepta footage into WHS training or introducing infringement penalties will encourage drivers to slow down further, to comply with safe speed limits. Speeding is an obvious problem for drivers of light vehicles on this site. HSE managers can use Intercepta data and reports to monitor speed compliance of light vehicles over time, including non- mine vehicles. Engineering or other solutions may be considered to slow down drivers – especially between 9 pm and 7 am. Further monitoring is required to identify repeat offenders and achieve speed compliance. It is suggested that further use of one or more Intercepta trailers alongside a program of identifying problem drivers would improve safety for all road users. Monitoring entrance gates or high risk locations will provide valuable data on both site personnel and contractors. This insight would be beneficial when implementing driver safety training for visitors and contractors. Intercepta is proving to be an effective safety device, providing HSE and mine managers with valuable data to improve safety for all road users.
