Reflective Account On Risk Management
1)I always try to identify risk issues throughout processes I work with and then I escalate to higher
management in order the company to avoid any risk exposure.
More specifically, in Q3 I caught an incorrect Mercer posting before I process T+1 (Trade and Setled
Macros populated some funds the other way round as Debited instead of Credited) and escalated
promptly to SA in order to amend related sheets and avoid risk . As a result, we did not debit /credit
incorrectly funds and we avoid risks.
I always try to be aware of any ad hoc/changes necessary to be done on daily tasks and ask/confirm
my concerns before I perform any tasks. As an example the week starting from 7/11 I was aware of
any adjustment for ADIA.
Throughout Q3 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Axentis I Learn and classroom)focused on State Street policies and risk involved.
I completed my PDP (Personal Development Plan) in September. 2016 focusing on my objectives.
4)I have not participated in any initiatives so far as. my training I is still in progress in order to learn
all the team tasks.
21) I always try to be organised and fulfil my goals. I learn from my mistakes that help me to become
more flexible. I take prints and make notes when a difficult example turns up that helps me to be more
prepared the next time. More specifically, printed prior examples from manual Mercer allocations and
LBG help me to complete any ADHOC issues.
In Q3 and Q4 I am more experienced compared to Q1and Q2. I am able to cover faster more tasks
within the team that gives me the opportunity to be more available for my colleques when they need
help.
I receive feedback from every colleague and pay attention to every detail they point out in order to be

Lord Of The Flies By William Shakespeare
Perhaps one of the most famous betrayals in history was that of Julius Caesar by his friend Marcus
Brutus. Upon realizing his friend s part in his death, a shocked Caesar asks, Et tu, Brute? [You too,
Brutus?] and falls to his death. (Et tu, Brute?) The allegorical story Lord of The Flies consists of many
situations where the conflicts and betrayals between Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin are represented
through two boys on the island, Jack and Ralph. In the beginning of the story, Jack and Ralph work
together and have generally peaceful relations. However, as time goes on, tension on the island
increases, eventually resulting in the boys becoming leaders of two separate tribes. Finally, Jack
violates the previously agreed upon peace ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The boys are forced to survive on a deserted island with no adults. Initially, the boys get along well.
Jack and Ralph are two of the older boys, both headstrong in two separate ways. Ralph has a desire to
keep order on the island whilst Jack is hungry for power. Ralph is quickly realized as the best fit for a
leader and elected chief, but makes sure to give Jack an important role as well after noticing his
jealousy. Ralph says of Jack, Jack s in charge of the choir. They can be what do you want them to be?
Jack responds with Hunters, and Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with a shy liking (Golding 23).
Ralph gives Jack this job more so to avoid conflict than to have any type of second in command on the
island. This is largely a political move, just as the Nazi Soviet Non Aggression Pact was. In the eyes of
Stalin, who is compared to Ralph, the pact to keep peace largely benefited him. Stalin was given time
to build up the Soviet military while keeping his nation on peaceful terms with Germany (German
Soviet Nonaggression Pact), and Jack was given a job by Ralph to avoid conflict. The alliance
between Hitler and Stalin helped the both of them out immensely; it even contained a secret
agreement in which the Soviets and Germans agreed how they would later divide up Eastern Europe
(German Soviet Nonaggression Pact). The original meetings of both Hitler

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Sealed Bidding By Procurement
Procurement by public entities is guided by primary law principles of transparency, equal treatment
and non discrimination, procurement laws sets up an extensive legal framework regarding the
procurement of work, supply and service contracts. There are two main reasons for the use of specific
procedures i.e. why contracting authorities do not just negotiate or simply buy from the closest
supplier. First, it provides for more public accountability and therefore less cases of corruption
practices. Additionally, tendering procedures aim to ensure the best value for money by making it
necessary for suppliers to act highly competitive. As a result, market mechanisms will help in
facilitating the best possible practices. In situations where market mechanisms are not effective, tender
procedures might lose their effectiveness as well. If for example there is lack of competition due to
certain complexities or as a result of lower bidder interest, negotiations with just one or two suppliers
may be the most efficient manner to handle the process. Therefore, we discuss the inherent advantages
and disadvantages of sealed bidding and contracting by negotiation as procedural frameworks for
tendering.
Sealed bidding
Sealed bidding is a procurement method used when the best value is expected to result from the
selection of the lowest evaluated offer. Generally competitive sealed bidding are used to procure
supplies and services except when price is not the determinative element in the

Abstract
Purpose Delay is an important issue for service providers. Indeed, previous studies have widely shown
the negative effect of waiting time on consumer service satisfaction. However, being satisfied with the
service seems to be insufficient for customers to remain loyal. Creating customer loyalty is even more
crucial than just satisfying them. The paper aims to investigate how customers ... Show more content

Conceptual background
Waiting time
Service perishability gives rise to many problems for service providers and these intensify when
service demand fluctuates. To tackle this major problem, firms adopt strategies to match capacity and
demand (Bateson and Hoffman, 1999; Lovelock and
Lapert, 1999; Zeithaml and Bitner, 2002). One of the first strategies adopted is to flex capacity to meet
demand. During periods of peak demand, the organization expands its capacity by adding new
resources such as people, facilities and equipment. Second, companies may try to smooth demand.
Companies can motivate consumers by making their offer more attractive during low demand periods.
Companies may also choose to use reservation in order to spread the demand evenly. However, even
with booking, service providers experience difficulties in minimizing delay in service delivery. When
demand and capacity cannot be aligned, waiting line strategies can still be found.
Among waiting line strategies, we find making wait more fun or tolerable, differentiating waiting
customers and choosing an appropriate waiting line configuration (Zeithaml and Bitner, 2002).
Despite the implementation of all these strategies, when customer waiting time is too long, companies
may indeed make consumers dissatisfied. Service providers may even miss one

Atreus And Justice
The laws of the Erinyes states that the nature of blood crimes mandates that blood must be paid with
blood shed. This philosophy is known in Biblical times as an Eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. With
this type of justice, the lines of right and wrong are blurred. Individuals taking justice into their own
hands constitutes for a never ending cycle of violence, driven by betrayal and vengeance. The story of
the house of Atreus is about finding civil order and justice. The trilogy takes you from blood justice of
Furies Law to Apollonian concept of justice, also known as Athenian justice. Basically, the concept of
out with the old in with the new . The story leads to the tell of new deities and higher methodology of
civil justice. Is the ancient way of vengeful justice still sufficient or, in order for growth, is civilization
better off with a judicial form of justice? The story also brings to light the relationship of family.
Which is stronger and more essential in ancient society; the bond of mother and child? Father and
Son? Or the bonds of kinship? Ultimately the antiquated law of land must be replaced in order for
society to evolve to a higher level of liberty and justice for the greater good.
The vengeance era of justice followed the beliefs in ancient Gods support and ideas. Therefore,
Clytaemestra seeking revenge for her daughter being sacrificed, was justified because husband and
wife are not blood related. According to the gods a person is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Under this new era of justice Orestes was found free of blame and pardoned for his crime against
mother. The Apollonian concept of justice became the new Athena judicial system. It established a
new method of prosecution for offenders like Clytaemestra. This system led people away from blood
for blood, eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth form of justice to a more ethical manner of modern day

Loggerhead Sea Turtle
Turtles belong to the class Reptilia, the subclass Anapsida, and the order Testudines (Le Buff 1990).
Reptiles have repeatedly invaded marine environments with varying success and marine adaptation
has been undertaken more than once in the history of the Cheloniidae family. Marine reptiles were
particularly successful in the Mesozoic as major predators in the sea. Mesozoic marine reptiles
explored a variety of swimming styles and diets that included fish, cephalopods, other vertebrates, and
hard shelled invertebrates (Motani 2009). The earliest marine turtles appeared in the Jurassic and were
a marine species of the family Pleurosternidae known as Desmemys bertelsmanni, as well as an entire
marine family, the Thalassemyidae. The carapace of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two lineages of sea turtle survived through the Eocene Epoch 55 to 38 millions years ago (Bowen
2003). One lineage was the predecessor of the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), the only
member of the family Dermochelyidae, and the other lineage gave rise to the six species of the family
Cheloniidae, one of which is the loggerhead sea turtle (Bowen 2003). Today, only seven or eight
species of marine turtles survive, distributed unevenly through all three tropical oceans. The modern
decline in sea turtles species is not due to inherently poor adaption to post Pleistocene conditions, but
is mainly a result of current and past anthropogenic exploitation. Additionally, the greater diversity of
sea turtle taxa in the past compared to today is also due to the disappearance of entire isolated oceans
such as the Nirobrara Sea, which was once inhabited by a diversity of seat turtle species. It is also due
to other evolutionary mechanisms. Early sea turtle lineages had a growth of experimental type species
that were more specialized, and these eventually became narrowed down to modern species as
overspecialized species had a poor response to changing

Negative Effects Of Technology On Teenagers
Have you ever buried your face in your smartphone for hours? Have you missed out on events or told
your friends you couldn t hang out because you just wanted to stay at home and watch Netflix or play
video games? If so, you probably have, or have previously had, an addiction to technology. The first
Apple iPhone was only released ten years ago, and it is becoming a bigger issue for this generation s
teenagers. Teenagers are abusing modern technology it s affecting them and others negatively because
it encourages irritability and depression, discourages face to face interaction, and puts teenager s
privacy and safety at risk.
To begin, technology affects teenagers mindset negatively. First, it can result in a lack of chemicals,
such as melatonin, a chemical triggered in your brain that helps you reach a state of relaxation. This
can be faulty to a regular sleep basis of a teenager, and it can take away from the eight to ten hours of
sleep that teenagers need, according to multiple studies. According to Dr . Lawrence J. Epstein, People
who have problems with sleep are at increased risk for developing emotional disorders, depression,
and anxiety. Not only does sleep trigger anger, but competitiveness does as well; multiple forms of
social media support this idea that having more friends is better, even if you don t know who they are.
The more followers you have, the more liked, respected and admired you are by your fellow peers.
Some people even go to the extreme lengths

Cultural Legacies
The cultural legacies of the Maori reveals to a great extent the properties of their society in addition to
the skills possessed by the Maori. They were a very culturally rich civilization, and harboured some of
the most well known ancient practices that still leave a mark on New Zealand today.
Above all, was the haka dance, which could have its roots traced back to before the Polynesians
inhabited New Zealand. The haka was very important in Maori culture and was used for many
important occasions, such as funerals, battles and to acknowledge great achievements, most likely to
frighten the enemy or express their emotion. This reveals that Maori were very physical, as most of

In Maori mythology, the primordial couple, Rangi and Papa lie locked together in a tight embrace,
with their many children left with no choice but to live in the confined space between them. Then the
children split up as some forced their parents apart, and some were angry at the depression caused by
the split of the mother and father. They fought, and the god of winds attacks humans to this day. This
reveals the Maori were polytheistic and had legends to explain natural phenomenon. The Maori also
believed in tapu (taboo) and mana (spiritual power). Certain individuals and objects would possess
mana. Those who were high ranking could not touch items of low rank and vice versa. If they did it
would be seen as pollution and a violation of tapu. To disregard tapu was seen as an offence to the
gods and was punishable by death. The activities in the daily lives of Maori were were linked to the
maintenance and enhancement of mana. The Maori were so vigorous when preserving their mana,
they would occasionally eat the bodies of their enemies. This infers that the Maori were exceptionally
religious and would resort to cannibalism to fulfil their religious requirements. The punishments for
disregarding those requirements were severe. The Maori even believed they were vulnerable to
supernatural evils if the requirements were not met. Ultimately, this reveals that the Maori had strong
beliefs that they upheld

Richard Scheick s Poem Richard Cory
To the average eye Richard Cory would seem to have the world and no worries in life with his wealth
and social status. However, Richard Cory would turn out to be unhappy and uneasy with the life
around him which would seemingly lead to his death in the end. In the poem Richard Cory Richard
Cory is a humble man who is revered by the townspeople because of his status as a wealthy
individual. Many of the towns people wanted to be in his shoes and thought of him as king. However,
he seemed to be no more than a simple man regardless of his social status. The narrator even states

wished they were in his shoes, they never actually took the time to get to know Richard Cory as just a
human which is all he was a simple human. [As] Nowhere in the poem is it suggested that the people
try to come to Richard Cory, no where is it either intimated that they approach him, much less respond

Effects Of Neoliberalism
On February 17th I joined The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) in their march to City hall
in protest for their immediate goal of more warming centers and shelters. Of no coincidence the date
of the march fell strategically on the same day that Toronto chambers would be deciding on the Cities
budget. Preceding the march, OCAP members, and supporters gathered at the corner of Queen and
Sherbourne (the North East corner of Moss Park) and huddled around speakers rally cries for
homeless justice before heading west along Queen street towards city hall. The energy of march was

So, although many theorists hold that public space is absolutely essential for the function of
democratic politics it is interesting to contemplate whether or not public protest is the proper venue for
the homeless, and if not public protest than what avenue may be used by the homeless to create
socioeconomic change (Ruppert, 2006). Occupy Wall Street (OWS), a movement ignited throughout
the globe in 2011 is arguably a protest movement that successfully captured the public s attention and
was a protest on behalf of the 99%, that not only included homeless people but was made up by
unemployed in dept college graduates, workers struggling with illness, immigrants supporting
families, and those who encompass the struggling middle class. OWS was an incredible movement
that enthused people with homes to live outside of their homes and with homeless people , bringing
together the most marginalized within society and the middle class together (Kohn, 2013, p. 106).
OWS is an example in which poverty and the homeless agenda was taken seriously as it successful
was incorporated amongst other agendas. Unfortunately, this is a sad predicament, as it is an example

Cervical Cancer

C. Rath
Cervical cancer is considered to be a slow growing reproductive disease that affects thousands of
women in the United States annually. This particular type of cancer forms within and/or on the tissue
of the cervix. The cervix is part of the female reproductive tract, which connects the uterus to the
vagina. Cervical cancer begins when surface level cells on the cervix divide uncontrollably causing
cervical lesions, which if left untreated can progress into cancer. If not found in the early stages,
cervical cancer can spread from the surface of the cervix, deep into the tissue of the cervix as well as
the surrounding tissues within the vagina and uterus (Slaz,
2010). It is estimated that there is an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Engaging in smoking and a weak immune system can also increases one s risk of developing cervical
cancer because the body s ability to fight infection and disease is lessened
(Lindau, 2001). Furthermore, tobacco products contain numerous known carcinogens, which
physically affect an individual s overall health as well. Lastly, the lack of regular PAP smear testing
can be crucial in determining whether or not a woman will develop cervical cancer.
Annual PAP smears are extremely important because this is not only an opportunity for a woman to
have the capability to monitor her own sexual health, but it is also a chance for physicians to ensure
that no abnormalities are present.
In the early stages of cervical cancer there may not always be noticeable symptoms, which reinforces
why women should receive annual PAP smears. The PAP smear itself is a procedure where a
gynecologist scrapes cells from the top layers of the cervix, which are then analyzed to check for any
abnormalities. The PAP smear test is extremely important for women because the tests can find
abnormal cells in early stages, thus allowing physicians to treat women earlier (Slaz, 2010; Hughes,
2009; Charney, 2006). Early detection and treatment is more likely to be effective in combating
cervical cancer, as opposed to finding abnormalities in later stages which could have already
progressed into cancerous lesions. Today, there are three main options that physicians

been over 200 school shooting incidents ― an average of nearly one a week ― since the horrifying

the belief of many adults and psychologists that specialize in child development, violent video games
are not an influence on violent behavior in children and should not be regulated by the government

that video games help in the development of cognitive skills such as memory and problem solving.

Fences by August Wilson
Throughout history, civilizations have built fences to keep enemies out and keep those they want to
protect inside. In society today, people create metaphorical fences in order to fence in their feelings,
while others create literal fences in order to keep the unwanted away. In the play Fences, the Maxon
family lives in 1950 s America whose love for sports and one another are questioned at times when
they need to be together the most. In the play Fences by August Wilson, two main characters Troy and
Cory Maxon build a fence, literally and metaphorically, which as the book progresses, becomes a
symbol that allows each character to truly understand each other. In Fences, Troy Maxon builds a
fence around his property that contains metaphorical reasons as well as the literal meaning. During a
conversation with Troy and Cory, Bono mentions the fence Troy is building for his wife Rose and says
Some people build fences to keep people out...and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose
wants to hold on to you all. She loves you (61). Bono explains this to Troy because Cory was unable
to comprehend why Rose wanted the fence up in the first place. This opens the reader up to the
symbolization of the fence itself. The fence allows Rose to keep Troy with her because she has loved
him for so many years and does not want to let him go or leave her for another woman. Later, in Act
two, Troy, after speaking to Rose about his new baby who he had with his mistress Alberta,

Promotions include three purchase dimensions which describe purchase strategy of consumers which

Analysis Of Herbert Marcuse s One Dimensional Man
Herbert Marcuse, a Frankfurt philosopher, wrote his book One Dimensional Man in the 1960 s during
at the height of the Cold War. The book One Dimensional Man was both influential and highly critical
of modern industrial capitalism and as Marcuse believed, its subsequent exploitation of people and
nature, as well as its contribution to modern consumer culture and new forms of social control. One
Dimensional Man offers an analysis of the new state of consumerism during the 1960 s through a
critical lens. This essay will focus on One Dimensional Man as I explore his view that technological
development, alienated labour and consumerism have distorted affluent societies in creating false

However, he never addresses what the standards are for defining what is true and false. He also argues
that it is the individual who must ultimately decide this, but at the same time, the individual does not
have the mental capacity to do so (Marcuse, H. 1968). This development of false needs results in one
dimensional thought and behaviour where the ability for individuals to think critically is
compromised. This lack of critical thinking results in a flattening of discussion, critic and
independence. What Marcuse is ultimately saying is that the capacity for independent thought is
becoming blurred with the influence of consumer culture. The ability for those within an advanced
industrial society to reason between two dimensions (Marcuse, H. 1968), in other words, to look at an
industrial society characterised by labour and waste while still acknowledging technological progress,
and to imagine a form of living that uses technology to aid nature rather than perpetuate poverty and
oppression within the society. Why do false needs exist? they are a means of making money.
Consumers think they are free to choose what product they want to purchase, Marcuse calls this
deceptive liberty (Marcuse, H. 1968, p.9). The façade of liberty to choose what to do and buy. It is
deceptive because people are greatly influenced by this new consumer culture and may not even

Deutsche Bank Case
Deutsche Bank and the Road to Basel III
Deutsche Bank made its entrance into the world in 1870 and it was one of the first banks to adopt
universal banking as it promoted and facilitated trade relations between Germany and other overseas
markets. Deutsche Bank acquired smaller banks in Germany in order to be the most prominent bank in
their home base in addition to having a global reach. Following World War I, inflation took over
Germany causing many borrowers to default on their loans forcing the bank to sell most of its assets in
order to stay alive (however that diminished their global presence). The bank s involvement during

their industry peers with 33.3x, while BNP Paribas followed close behind with 30.9x. In 2007
Deutsche Bank increased their leverage to 71.3x blowing their peers out of the water with the closest

enormous debt and if net income falls due to increased expense ROA declines but ROE can still rise as
it does not effect shareholder equity. The leverage did allow for large financial gains but did cause

William Chaucer s The Friar s Tale
Society has always judged a person on his level of morality. This level of judgment has been evident
since the immoral acts of Adam and Eve were committed. Some of these acts are dishonesty, adultery,
and ignorance. The Friar s Tale makes these moral issues clear through various characters. The
summoner and the Devil both show dishonesty, abuse of power, and mercilessness. In this short story,
Chaucer illustrates the theme of immorality and how it affects the character of all the persons in the
tale.
.Characters display dishonesty in The Friar s Tale . The summoner steals the money that he collects
from peasants. Chaucer illustrates this act of immorality when he says,
Now truly...so do I. I never spare to take a thing, knows God, unless it be too heavy or too hot. What I
get for myself, and privately, no kind of conscience for such things have I .
(170 174).
The summoner is being dishonest to the people that he collects from by not telling him that he keeps
the money. The summoner admits to the Devil that he steals. The summoner also says that he has no
conscience. Therefore he can not be kept from evil.
(Gray 115)
Bowden addresses the summoner s immorality when he states,
Fact and fiction both condemn him as especially licentious and dishonest. He also mentions how
Gower writes of him as pretending to be poor but, in actuality, as being as rich as a king
(Bowden 55).
Stealing is immoral, and Bowden reinforces that the summoner is immoral and steals beyond need.

Jimmy Valentine Analysis
If a person cannot change their morals, then no one can change. Jimmy Valentine was a burglar that
had just gotten out of jail for cracking safes. Jimmy was a good guy at heart but made some bad
decisions. Jimmy moved to Elmore where he opened a shoe store, and met Annabel his fiance. Jimmy
Valentine was trying to live a moral life because he was honest, compassionate, and responsible.
First, Jimmy Valentine was trying to live a moral life by showing his honesty. Jimmy showed his
honesty by agreeing to go with Ben Spencer after he cracked open the safe. Jimmy knew that Ben had
been watching him, and instead of running after he cracked the safe he went to Ben as if he was going
to take him back to jail. Although, Ben gave him another chance to live a moral life, the fact he went
straight to Ben shows honesty. Also, Jimmy showed his honesty by not robbing Annabels father s
bank. Since Jimmy did not rob Mr. Adams bank he was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jimmy showed his responsibility by opening a shoe store in Elmore. Jimmy needed something to do
work wise, so he opened a shoe store which shows that he has a lot of responsibility to take care of it.
Since Jimmy showed people that he could be responsible and have his own business, people respected
him. Jimmy stuffed it into his vest pocket, threw off his coat and pulled up his shirt sleeves. With that
act Ralph D. Spencer passed away and Jimmy Valentine took his place (Henry). It was Jimmy s
responsibility to open the safe to save Agatha. Jimmy had to try his best to open the safe because he
was the only one there that knew how to open it. Another reason Jimmy showed his responsibility was
by planning to move west with Annabel and keep her safe. Jimmy knew it was his responsibility to
protect Annabel, and that mindset helped him live a moral life. Jimmy Valentine was an exceptionally
responsible person after he moved to Elmore to live and lead a moral

90 Tickets Of Instant Noodles Character Analysis
The novel 90 Packets of Instant Noodles, written by Deb Fitzpatrick. The novel involves the act of
growing up and a twist of adventure. It is about a boy named Joel who gets sent off to solitary
confinement as punishment for a crime that has been committed. Through the book we examine how
each character faces an internal struggle or moral dilemma within themselves. The character Joel faces
moral dilemmas of friendship, guilt and not doing the right thing. In the novel, we also notice Joel s
father face internal struggles which involve his son being such a troublemaker because of the father
son relationship they have. Lastly, we witness Joel s best mate Craggs, who faces the internal struggles
of family and not being loved. All of the characters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Craggs displays the internal struggle of family through direct characterisation. On pages 89 90 you
read Joel thinking about Craggs s family problems. From page 90 you notice how as all the shouting
an anger coming from inside is being made an all Craggs does is keep his little sister Hannah safe and
reassuring her everything will be okay. This shows us a more soft, sensitive side of Craggs. Craggs
doesn t have a stable home lifestyle from indirect characterisation which represents the way he acts
out, in order to gain his parents attention, instead of always fighting with each other. On page 157
Craggs say to Joel in the letter I had to lie on my release conditions and say I d be living with the old s
(as if that would ever help me), this signifies how Craggs thinks his parents don t care about him.
Another struggle Craggs face is the fear of not being loved. Craggs doesn t have any affection from
anyone besides his sister and Joel. He fears that he want ever be loved. In the text we read how Craggs
only friend is Joel and how Joel is the person Craggs can be honest and loyal too. But after the whole
incident Craggs fear he has a lost that sense of affection. All of his internal struggles associated in the
novel are presented throughout the whole

The Peripheral Nervous System
The nervous system of the human body can be separated into two parts: the Central Nervous System
(CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). The brain and the spinal cord make up the Central
Nervous System, which is the nervous system s processing center. The Peripheral Nervous System
consists of nerves that branch from the Central Nervous System and connect it to other body parts
(Shier, Butler, Lewis 2015). The somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system are the
subdivisions of the Peripheral Nervous System. In this essay, I will distinguish between the Central
Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System. The Central Nervous System serves as the

It contains both cranial and spinal nerves which connect the skeletal muscles and skin to the Central
Nervous System. There are twelve pairs of cranial nerves. Olfactory nerves are the first pair of cranial
nerves, and they contain sensory neuron axons. Sense of smell is linked with this pair of nerves. The
second pair of cranial nerves is the optic nerves, which are responsible for vision. Oculomotor nerves
are the third pair of cranial nerves, and they consist of both voluntary and involuntary muscles. The
voluntary muscles function to move the eye and raise the eyelid. The involuntary muscles focus the
lenses of the eye and regulate how much light enters the eye. The fourth pair of cranial nerves is the
trochlear nerves, which carry out motor impulses that move the eye independently from the
oculomotor nerves. Trigeminal nerves are the fifth pair of cranial nerves, and they can be divided into
three separate parts. The maxillary division manages sensory impulses of the skin of the face, upper
teeth, and upper lip. The mandibular division oversees sensory impulses of the lower lip, lower teeth,

charge of sensory impulses from tear glands, the forehead, etc. to the brain. The abducens nerves are
the sixth pair of cranial nerves, and they stimulate motor impulses that move

Has Pos-Fordism Replaced Fordism in Capitalist Society
The beginning of the 20th century when Henry Ford first time put his genius idea of dividing works
into separate parts by using assemble line into practice was marked as the start of massive production.
It is also the debut for Taylorism in the massive production area. After that such method of massive
standard production was named as Foedism. Based on the scientific management theory that comes
from Taylorism, the manufacturing area began to be dominated by Fordism. However, since the 1960s
when a series of new technologies appeared, manufacturing did not have to be formed in a fixed
method. A more flexible production method, which was named as Post Fordism turned up. From then

Since it is such a unusual idea to the dominant opinions, theories of post Fordism have suffered some
strong criticism. Pollert(1988), one who is opposed to the opinion that Taylorism and Fordism have
been replaced by post Fordism , argues that theories of flexibility are too simple to believe and at
times incorrect. She says that the comments, which indicate the Fordism once dominated the
production method are incorrect. She otherwise, points out that the flexibility to produce specialized
products are nothing new and the key of Japanese business success is cheap, well designed and
reliable products rather than a small amount of specialized products. Thus, flexible specialization and
post Fordism was not that successful. To the issue about relationships between flexibility and skill
levels, she maintains a different view that flexibility at times also leads to some opposite effects. In
addition, Pollert(1988) also worried about introducing new technology or new management proposals
into practices, since it may cause conflicts between workers and management. Apart from Pollert,
Stephen Wood(1989) also questions whether the flexibility has led to a greater requirement of skills.
And he doubts that the people who support the post Fordism theories exaggerate their cases. Just as
Hall(1988) claims that there is still no evidence that

Perhaps the greatest failure to fully grasp the true intentions of Hitler s regime was the signing of the
Munich Pact. The Munich Pact or Munich Agreement was signed by the leaders of Germany, Italy,
Britain, and France on September 30, 1938. The backdrop to the Munich Agreement is Adolf Hitler s
rise to power and Germany s remilitarization. Hitler moved aggressively to jumpstart a foundering
German economy and to jettison the constraints that had been imposed on the German military after
World War I. European leaders nervously looked the other way as he ran roughshod over the security
provisions of the Treaty of Versailles and reasserted German power in central Europe. One goal of
Hitler s policies was to create Lebensraum, or greater living

Virgin Of The Rocks Essay
Featured in this gallery are the two versions of The Virgin of the Rocks (also known as The Madonna
of the Rocks). These two altarpieces are being showcased in particular in this exhibition because they
share a location in the same Milanese church, the San Francesco Grande, and most importantly the
same artist (although this has been debated), Leonardo Da Vinci, painted both versions of the
altarpiece. Further, another reason why they are being portrayed in this exhibition is due to the debates
over their authenticity, even though they are 15 years apart in conception. Additionally, the two pieces
share the same subject matter, imagery, iconography and pyramidal composition. In both altarpieces,
the subject matter is unusual since the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the biographer, Charles Nicholl: the columbine suggests the dove of the Holy Ghost, the
cyclamen below Christ have heart shaped leaves which make it an emblem of love and devotion, and
by his knee is a basal rosette of primrose, an emblem of virtue. Kneeling below St. John is the
acanthus, considered to be a symbol of the resurrection because of its rapid growth; the hypericum
which has small dots of red on yellow petals represents the blood of the martyred St. John. Other
hidden symbols are religious in nature: the water, pearls and the crystal, which are used to fasten Mary
s robe, are symbols of her purity. This would make the connection with the Immaculate Conception of
Mary. Further, the stone formations, eroded by natural forces are a metaphor for Mary, pointing
towards her unexpected, virtuous fertility. Da Vinci wanted the viewer to feel as if they were seeing
material Nature spiritually transmuted.
In both versions of the altarpiece, Leonardo Da Vinci portrayed the Virgin together with the Christ
child and St. John, and with an angel. They have been placed amongst a rocky backdrop or a grotto. It
is the setting of the Biblical figures against this pictorial background that gives the altarpiece it s title,
the Virgin of the Rocks. The Virgin has been placed in the center of the composition dressed in a blue
garment. By having the Virgin as the focal

Descriptive Essay About Cats
I hated cats, I disliked the way they smell or always want to cuddle and how they like to dig their
sharp claws into your leather chairs. Everybody has their Monday rituals, sometimes it s coffee or
jogging through the park, but mine is a little out of the ordinary. Each day, my ritual begins at six in
the morning with me walking my ten cats down Canal Street to Pet Central to buy cat food. I used to
despise cats until I became their caretaker after a tragedy. This is my story about how I became the
man on Canal Street with 10 felines.
I remember going over to my Mom s apartment on that cold and soggy day in the middle of Fall. As I
entered the house the foul smell of felines engulfed my nose and I began to sneeze all over my Mother
s furniture. I yelled to the top of my lungs I HATE CATS! to which she scolded me and said At least
they keep me company unlike you in a sarcastic voice. Then she went into the kitchen to retrieve the
roast she had been preparing all day. The smell of the golden roast helped me forget the stench of her
cats. As we ate she told me about her day and how she had bought a new cat, to which I replied in a
frustrated tone, You need to stop with all this cat stuff, I lost count after 7 and it can t be healthy for
your breathing with all this dandruff and cat hair floating in the air I stammered. She bypassed my
remark, then blurted out I invited you over because something happened today at then doctor s office
which puzzled me because usually I

A Simple Life Philosophy In Walden By David Henry Thoreau
Walden author, David Henry Thoreau, has a simple life philosophy and, quite ironically, it is to live a
simple life. Thoreau displays his philosophical ideas in his memoir, which he is most known for,
Walden. Reading his memoir, we are exposed to his ideas on how one must regard life which is, rather
than getting what one wants, but, to disregard what is irrelevant in our lives and to move forward
towards our aspirations. Personally, I share similar views due to my constant termination of anything
in my life that will slow down or stop me from reaching my goals. Like Thoreau, I believe that being
unbiased, having an optimistic outlook on life itself, and working towards meeting my goals will lead
me to live a successful and simple life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
75). Many live their lives unappreciative and don t realize the best of it until they have fallen
completely into the dark. Most are handed everything in life and others must work for it. Whether it is
the humility or the realization of worth, falling into the darkness opens up a new light for everyone.
The philosophies I live by are more directed towards being independent and reaching my full
potential. As said by Wayne Gretzky, You miss 100% of the shots you don t take. ; by me being
independent and paving my road in life, I make sure to try my best in every given factor. I personally
live by this quote because it is very true. Trying out something even if you think you ll fail will at least
teach you a lesson. I don t think I can succeed in life unless I try something out. Whether I am prone

and you still make progress. I started living by this quote back in 7th grade in Drama class. During our
drama competition, my group had the opportunity of winning first place. We didn t try as hard as we

Immigration Through The Eyes Of Donald Trump
Immigration through the Eyes of Donald Trump Make America great again! As Donald Trump s
slogan goes on to say; but what does it mean to make America great again? Does it mean we need to
deport all the immigrants back to their country? Seems like Donald Trump has an idea about what can
be done to improve our country. Trump has to be the most controversial presidential candidate running
in the 2016 election, and his opinion about the immigration policy is his most talked about issue that
continues to be involved in his campaign. Throughout the presidential campaign, Donald Trump has
been the center of attention when it comes to the topic of immigration. The media has clamped onto
the talk of Trump wanting to build a wall between the U.S and Mexico, all while having the
immigrants build it. With the use of media, Trump has been able to create a sense of fear that the
immigrants bring violence and crime to our country, as well as his intention of wanting to create a
whole new system and to create a secure country. To start off, Donald Trump has taken into account
that using fear as a tactic to help further him along in the election is right way to go. According to the
article The Politics of Fear: Why Donald Trump is no Laughing Matter it states, After all, the United
States is a country that is often moved by fear and hatred, rather than love for fellow citizens
(Anderson, William). It has shown all throughout our history that fear is a way to get the people to

Australia s Involvement In Vietnam
In July 1964 Australia sent troops to another war. No, not a war of trenches or prisoners, but a war of
close quarter combat, excessive mortar firing and the dreaded napalm. Yes Vietnam. This decision was
based on multiple reasons. The first reason was that we needed to stick to our treaty s, The South East
Asia treaty (SEATO) and ANZUS, the alliance of Australia, New Zealand and the United States. The
second reason was the fear of invasion from countries in the north that would be quickly taken over by
communism i.e. the domino theory. Australia had been sent a request from the South Vietnamese
government for involvement along side the US. Rumours going around back then were that the United
states were curious to see if Australia would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main substance of the treaty stated, The parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of
any one of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is
threatened in the Pacific This means that Australia was not forced into sending allied troops to help the
US, but the government believed that if they did, they would be in Americas good books for future
conflicts. This is seen in Allan Renouf s letter On the contrary, we believe it will prolong and deepen
the suffering of that unhappy people so that Australia s very name may become a term of reproach
among them The Southeast Asia Treaty Organisation (SEATO) was an international organisation for
collective defence in Southeast Asia. This treaty was used by the US to gain support from these allied
countries of Australia, so there would be less conflict, if communism spread that south.
The Vietnam War was the longest twentieth century conflict in which Australians participated in.
Overall there was no outcome to the conflict and over 4000 injured and 500 died. Australia joined
with the US because of the growing fear of communism, the ANZUS and SEATO treaties and
Australia s forward defence strategies. The outcome of the war was a failure, but Australia has come

Comparison Of The Chrysanthemums And The White Quail
Compare and Contrast The Long Valley
Two characters, Elisa Allen and Mary Teller, struggle with the idea of being accepted into the society
of the 1930s. Women s rights were not fully accepted in the 1930s, and these two characters were set
in the common day view of men and women. In the 1930s, [Society has] assigned to white women
such roles as housewife, secretary, PTA chairman, and schoolteacher. Black women can now be
schoolteachers, too, but they are most prominently assigned to such domestic roles as maid, cook,
waitress, and babysitter (Chisholm 123). These assigned roles have impacted women around the
world, including the two characters in these short stories The Chrysanthemums and The White Quail .
Not being activists in women s rights, these women conformed to society and lived their lives as any
typical housewife in the 1930s. Their passions and choices during this time affected their way of
living and relationships. The two stories reflect similarities of the women s love for gardening and
lonely marriages, but also reflect their different viewpoints on the world they live in.
The two housewives have a passionate love for gardening and bestow their love and appreciation

The Truman Doctrine and Iron Curtain Speech
The Truman Doctrine and Iron Curtain Speech
After World War II, the USSR and United States engaged in an unprecedented conflict called the Cold
War. Despite the armaments being produced, this war was not directly fought with thousands of
soldiers or massive weapons. An enormous rise in tensions created a competition between the two
countries for diplomatic, economic, cultural, and military dominance. Of course, nothing was official
until President Harry Truman and Winston Churchill worked together to form a partnership of anti
Soviet aggression. The Truman Doctrine and Iron Curtain Speech officially started the Cold War,
initiated worldwide indirect fighting, and ended the United States well established policy of
isolationism. The Cold War can be easily described as a battle of communism versus capitalism. When
Britain announced they can no longer support Greece and Turkey, President Truman feared the
domino theory would become a reality and immediately began to develop the Truman Doctrine. This
policy would replace Britain as the major benefactor against the USSR s push for world communism,
and ignite the rivalry between communism and capitalism in Europe. According to John Mueller, the
empty wars that took place were all stemmed out of the bipolar structure of postwar international
politics from a contest of ideas. These contrasting ideologies made it easy for tensions to escalate and
for sides to be chosen. Additionally, Winston Churchill of Great Britain

Marge Piercy s Poetry
Marge Piercy is known for writing poems about women rights and women s negative treatment by
society in the 1936s. In her poem What s that smell in the kitchen? she talks about how society see
women. According to society, women were raised to cook and clean so women are supposed to have a
meal on the table for their husbands. Piercy s attitude toward this statement is that she is mad because
there is more quantiles to women than cooking and cleaning. In the poem What that smell in the
kitchen? Piercy s use of literary devices expresses how she feels about society treating women. This is
why women from all over the world are burning dinners, this is not because they do not know how to
cook, but as a protest to society that there is more quantiles to women. Society forces ... Show more

For example, in the last stanza Piercy states, Burning dinner is not incompetence but war. . This
metaphor helped the reader understand that women from all over the world are burning dinners as a
protest to society. This quotation shows how women are tired of being expected to have food on the
table for their husbands and clean the house, just because they were raised that way. In addition, the
author states, Look she says, once I was roast duck on your platter with parsley, but now I am spam.
This literary device allowed the reader to understand how women feels about society making them
feel less important. Piercy uses this metaphor as a symbol to show how women were once so
respected and powerful, but as time pass their power and respect began to fade away. They were no
longer appreciated for what they do. The connotations allowed the reader to figure out the universal
truth about women in the poem What s that smell in the kitchen? through the use of metaphors.
Another literary device that contributed to the reader discovery of the theme was the tone of the

Reflective Account On Risk Management 1)I always try to identify risk issues throughout processes I work with and then I escalate to higher management in order the company to avoid any risk exposure. More specifically, in Q3 I caught an incorrect Mercer posting before I process T+1 (Trade and Setled Macros populated some funds the other way round as Debited instead of Credited) and escalated promptly to SA in order to amend related sheets and avoid risk . As a result, we did not debit /credit incorrectly funds and we avoid risks. • 3. Lord Of The Flies By William Shakespeare Perhaps one of the most famous betrayals in history was that of Julius Caesar by his friend Marcus Brutus. Upon realizing his friend s part in his death, a shocked Caesar asks, Et tu, Brute? [You too, Brutus?] and falls to his death. (Et tu, Brute?) The allegorical story Lord of The Flies consists of many situations where the conflicts and betrayals between Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin are represented through two boys on the island, Jack and Ralph. In the beginning of the story, Jack and Ralph work together and have generally peaceful relations. However, as time goes on, tension on the island increases, eventually resulting in the boys becoming leaders of two separate tribes. Finally, Jack violates the previously agreed upon peace ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The boys are forced to survive on a deserted island with no adults. Initially, the boys get along well. Jack and Ralph are two of the older boys, both headstrong in two separate ways. Ralph has a desire to keep order on the island whilst Jack is hungry for power. Ralph is quickly realized as the best fit for a leader and elected chief, but makes sure to give Jack an important role as well after noticing his jealousy. Ralph says of Jack, Jack s in charge of the choir. They can be what do you want them to be? Jack responds with Hunters, and Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with a shy liking (Golding 23). Ralph gives Jack this job more so to avoid conflict than to have any type of second in command on the island. This is largely a political move, just as the Nazi Soviet Non Aggression Pact was. In the eyes of Stalin, who is compared to Ralph, the pact to keep peace largely benefited him. Stalin was given time to build up the Soviet military while keeping his nation on peaceful terms with Germany (German Soviet Nonaggression Pact), and Jack was given a job by Ralph to avoid conflict. The alliance between Hitler and Stalin helped the both of them out immensely; it even contained a secret agreement in which the Soviets and Germans agreed how they would later divide up Eastern Europe (German Soviet Nonaggression Pact). • 4. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Sealed Bidding By Procurement Procurement by public entities is guided by primary law principles of transparency, equal treatment and non discrimination, procurement laws sets up an extensive legal framework regarding the procurement of work, supply and service contracts. There are two main reasons for the use of specific procedures i.e. why contracting authorities do not just negotiate or simply buy from the closest supplier. First, it provides for more public accountability and therefore less cases of corruption practices. Additionally, tendering procedures aim to ensure the best value for money by making it necessary for suppliers to act highly competitive. As a result, market mechanisms will help in facilitating the best possible practices. In situations where market mechanisms are not effective, tender procedures might lose their effectiveness as well. If for example there is lack of competition due to certain complexities or as a result of lower bidder interest, negotiations with just one or two suppliers may be the most efficient manner to handle the process. Therefore, we discuss the inherent advantages and disadvantages of sealed bidding and contracting by negotiation as procedural frameworks for tendering. Sealed bidding Sealed bidding is a procurement method used when the best value is expected to result from the selection of the lowest evaluated offer. Generally competitive sealed bidding are used to procure supplies and services except when price is not the determinative element in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Indeed, previous studies have widely shown the negative effect of waiting time on consumer service satisfaction. However, being satisfied with the service seems to be insufficient for customers to remain loyal. Creating customer loyalty is even more crucial than just satisfying them. The paper aims to investigate how customers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conceptual background Waiting time Service perishability gives rise to many problems for service providers and these intensify when service demand fluctuates. To tackle this major problem, firms adopt strategies to match capacity and demand (Bateson and Hoffman, 1999; Lovelock and Lapert, 1999; Zeithaml and Bitner, 2002). One of the first strategies adopted is to flex capacity to meet demand. During periods of peak demand, the organization expands its capacity by adding new resources such as people, facilities and equipment. Second, companies may try to smooth demand. Companies can motivate consumers by making their offer more attractive during low demand periods. Companies may also choose to use reservation in order to spread the demand evenly. However, even with booking, service providers experience difficulties in minimizing delay in service delivery. When demand and capacity cannot be aligned, waiting line strategies can still be found. Among waiting line strategies, we find making wait more fun or tolerable, differentiating waiting customers and choosing an appropriate waiting line configuration (Zeithaml and Bitner, 2002). Despite the implementation of all these strategies, when customer waiting time is too long, companies may indeed make consumers dissatisfied. Service providers may even miss one ... • 6. Atreus And Justice The laws of the Erinyes states that the nature of blood crimes mandates that blood must be paid with blood shed. This philosophy is known in Biblical times as an Eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. With this type of justice, the lines of right and wrong are blurred. Individuals taking justice into their own hands constitutes for a never ending cycle of violence, driven by betrayal and vengeance. The story of the house of Atreus is about finding civil order and justice. The trilogy takes you from blood justice of Furies Law to Apollonian concept of justice, also known as Athenian justice. Basically, the concept of out with the old in with the new . The story leads to the tell of new deities and higher methodology of civil justice. Is the ancient way of vengeful justice still sufficient or, in order for growth, is civilization better off with a judicial form of justice? The story also brings to light the relationship of family. Which is stronger and more essential in ancient society; the bond of mother and child? Father and Son? Or the bonds of kinship? Ultimately the antiquated law of land must be replaced in order for society to evolve to a higher level of liberty and justice for the greater good. • 7. Loggerhead Sea Turtle Turtles belong to the class Reptilia, the subclass Anapsida, and the order Testudines (Le Buff 1990). Reptiles have repeatedly invaded marine environments with varying success and marine adaptation has been undertaken more than once in the history of the Cheloniidae family. Marine reptiles were particularly successful in the Mesozoic as major predators in the sea. Mesozoic marine reptiles explored a variety of swimming styles and diets that included fish, cephalopods, other vertebrates, and hard shelled invertebrates (Motani 2009). The earliest marine turtles appeared in the Jurassic and were a marine species of the family Pleurosternidae known as Desmemys bertelsmanni, as well as an entire marine family, the Thalassemyidae. One lineage was the predecessor of the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), the only member of the family Dermochelyidae, and the other lineage gave rise to the six species of the family Cheloniidae, one of which is the loggerhead sea turtle (Bowen 2003). Today, only seven or eight species of marine turtles survive, distributed unevenly through all three tropical oceans. The modern decline in sea turtles species is not due to inherently poor adaption to post Pleistocene conditions, but is mainly a result of current and past anthropogenic exploitation. Additionally, the greater diversity of sea turtle taxa in the past compared to today is also due to the disappearance of entire isolated oceans such as the Nirobrara Sea, which was once inhabited by a diversity of seat turtle species. It is also due to other evolutionary mechanisms. Early sea turtle lineages had a growth of experimental type species that were more specialized, and these eventually became narrowed down to modern species as overspecialized species had a poor response to changing ... Teenagers are abusing modern technology it s affecting them and others negatively because it encourages irritability and depression, discourages face to face interaction, and puts teenager s privacy and safety at risk. Above all, was the haka dance, which could have its roots traced back to before the Polynesians inhabited New Zealand. The haka was very important in Maori culture and was used for many important occasions, such as funerals, battles and to acknowledge great achievements, most likely to frighten the enemy or express their emotion. In Maori mythology, the primordial couple, Rangi and Papa lie locked together in a tight embrace, with their many children left with no choice but to live in the confined space between them. They fought, and the god of winds attacks humans to this day. This reveals the Maori were polytheistic and had legends to explain natural phenomenon. The Maori also believed in tapu (taboo) and mana (spiritual power). Certain individuals and objects would possess mana. Those who were high ranking could not touch items of low rank and vice versa. If they did it would be seen as pollution and a violation of tapu. To disregard tapu was seen as an offence to the gods and was punishable by death. The activities in the daily lives of Maori were were linked to the maintenance and enhancement of mana. The Maori were so vigorous when preserving their mana, they would occasionally eat the bodies of their enemies. This infers that the Maori were exceptionally religious and would resort to cannibalism to fulfil their religious requirements. The punishments for disregarding those requirements were severe. However, Richard Cory would turn out to be unhappy and uneasy with the life around him which would seemingly lead to his death in the end. In the poem Richard Cory Richard Cory is a humble man who is revered by the townspeople because of his status as a wealthy individual. Many of the towns people wanted to be in his shoes and thought of him as king. However, he seemed to be no more than a simple man regardless of his social status. Preceding the march, OCAP members, and supporters gathered at the corner of Queen and Sherbourne (the North East corner of Moss Park) and huddled around speakers rally cries for homeless justice before heading west along Queen street towards city hall. Occupy Wall Street (OWS), a movement ignited throughout the globe in 2011 is arguably a protest movement that successfully captured the public s attention and was a protest on behalf of the 99%, that not only included homeless people but was made up by unemployed in dept college graduates, workers struggling with illness, immigrants supporting families, and those who encompass the struggling middle class. OWS was an incredible movement that enthused people with homes to live outside of their homes and with homeless people , bringing together the most marginalized within society and the middle class together (Kohn, 2013, p. 106). Cervical cancer begins when surface level cells on the cervix divide uncontrollably causing cervical lesions, which if left untreated can progress into cancer. Engaging in smoking and a weak immune system can also increases one s risk of developing cervical cancer because the body s ability to fight infection and disease is lessened (Lindau, 2001). Furthermore, tobacco products contain numerous known carcinogens, which physically affect an individual s overall health as well. Lastly, the lack of regular PAP smear testing can be crucial in determining whether or not a woman will develop cervical cancer. Annual PAP smears are extremely important because this is not only an opportunity for a woman to have the capability to monitor her own sexual health, but it is also a chance for physicians to ensure that no abnormalities are present. In the early stages of cervical cancer there may not always be noticeable symptoms, which reinforces why women should receive annual PAP smears. The PAP smear itself is a procedure where a gynecologist scrapes cells from the top layers of the cervix, which are then analyzed to check for any abnormalities. The PAP smear test is extremely important for women because the tests can find abnormal cells in early stages, thus allowing physicians to treat women earlier (Slaz, 2010; Hughes, 2009; Charney, 2006). Early detection and treatment is more likely to be effective in combating cervical cancer, as opposed to finding abnormalities in later stages which could have already progressed into cancerous lesions. • 15. Fences by August Wilson Throughout history, civilizations have built fences to keep enemies out and keep those they want to protect inside. In society today, people create metaphorical fences in order to fence in their feelings, while others create literal fences in order to keep the unwanted away. In the play Fences, the Maxon family lives in 1950 s America whose love for sports and one another are questioned at times when they need to be together the most. In the play Fences by August Wilson, two main characters Troy and Cory Maxon build a fence, literally and metaphorically, which as the book progresses, becomes a symbol that allows each character to truly understand each other. In Fences, Troy Maxon builds a fence around his property that contains metaphorical reasons as well as the literal meaning. During a conversation with Troy and Cory, Bono mentions the fence Troy is building for his wife Rose and says Some people build fences to keep people out...and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you (61). Bono explains this to Troy because Cory was unable to comprehend why Rose wanted the fence up in the first place. This opens the reader up to the symbolization of the fence itself. The fence allows Rose to keep Troy with her because she has loved him for so many years and does not want to let him go or leave her for another woman. The book One Dimensional Man was both influential and highly critical of modern industrial capitalism and as Marcuse believed, its subsequent exploitation of people and nature, as well as its contribution to modern consumer culture and new forms of social control. One Dimensional Man offers an analysis of the new state of consumerism during the 1960 s through a critical lens. He also argues that it is the individual who must ultimately decide this, but at the same time, the individual does not have the mental capacity to do so (Marcuse, H. 1968). This development of false needs results in one dimensional thought and behaviour where the ability for individuals to think critically is compromised. This lack of critical thinking results in a flattening of discussion, critic and independence. What Marcuse is ultimately saying is that the capacity for independent thought is becoming blurred with the influence of consumer culture. The ability for those within an advanced industrial society to reason between two dimensions (Marcuse, H. 1968), in other words, to look at an industrial society characterised by labour and waste while still acknowledging technological progress, and to imagine a form of living that uses technology to aid nature rather than perpetuate poverty and oppression within the society. Some of these acts are dishonesty, adultery, and ignorance. The Friar s Tale makes these moral issues clear through various characters. The summoner and the Devil both show dishonesty, abuse of power, and mercilessness. In this short story, Chaucer illustrates the theme of immorality and how it affects the character of all the persons in the tale. .Characters display dishonesty in The Friar s Tale . The summoner steals the money that he collects from peasants. Chaucer illustrates this act of immorality when he says, Now truly...so do I. I never spare to take a thing, knows God, unless it be too heavy or too hot. What I get for myself, and privately, no kind of conscience for such things have I . (170 174). The summoner is being dishonest to the people that he collects from by not telling him that he keeps the money. The summoner admits to the Devil that he steals. The summoner also says that he has no conscience. Therefore he can not be kept from evil. (Gray 115) Bowden addresses the summoner s immorality when he states, Fact and fiction both condemn him as especially licentious and dishonest. He also mentions how Gower writes of him as pretending to be poor but, in actuality, as being as rich as a king (Bowden 55). As Donald Trump s slogan goes on to say; but what does it mean to make America great again? Does it mean we need to deport all the immigrants back to their country? Seems like Donald Trump has an idea about what can be done to improve our country. Trump has to be the most controversial presidential candidate running in the 2016 election, and his opinion about the immigration policy is his most talked about issue that continues to be involved in his campaign. Throughout the presidential campaign, Donald Trump has been the center of attention when it comes to the topic of immigration. The media has clamped onto the talk of Trump wanting to build a wall between the U.S and Mexico, all while having the immigrants build it. With the use of media, Trump has been able to create a sense of fear that the immigrants bring violence and crime to our country, as well as his intention of wanting to create a whole new system and to create a secure country. To start off, Donald Trump has taken into account that using fear as a tactic to help further him along in the election is right way to go. According to the article The Politics of Fear: Why Donald Trump is no Laughing Matter it states, After all, the United States is a country that is often moved by fear and hatred, rather than love for fellow citizens (Anderson, William). It has shown all throughout our history that fear is a way to get the people to listen and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Australia s Involvement In Vietnam In July 1964 Australia sent troops to another war. No, not a war of trenches or prisoners, but a war of close quarter combat, excessive mortar firing and the dreaded napalm. Yes Vietnam. This decision was based on multiple reasons. The first reason was that we needed to stick to our treaty s, The South East Asia treaty (SEATO) and ANZUS, the alliance of Australia, New Zealand and the United States. The second reason was the fear of invasion from countries in the north that would be quickly taken over by communism i.e. the domino theory. Australia had been sent a request from the South Vietnamese government for involvement along side the US. Rumours going around back then were that the United states were curious to see if Australia would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main substance of the treaty stated, The parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any one of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened in the Pacific This means that Australia was not forced into sending allied troops to help the US, but the government believed that if they did, they would be in Americas good books for future conflicts. This is seen in Allan Renouf s letter On the contrary, we believe it will prolong and deepen the suffering of that unhappy people so that Australia s very name may become a term of reproach among them The Southeast Asia Treaty Organisation (SEATO) was an international organisation for collective defence in Southeast Asia. This treaty was used by the US to gain support from these allied countries of Australia, so there would be less conflict, if communism spread that south. The Vietnam War was the longest twentieth century conflict in which Australians participated in. Overall there was no outcome to the conflict and over 4000 injured and 500 died. Australia joined with the US because of the growing fear of communism, the ANZUS and SEATO treaties and Australia s forward defence strategies. The outcome of the war was a failure, but Australia has come closer to America through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Lord Of The Flies Day One We are stranded on an island, or at least I am pretty sure it is an island. Ralph was the first person I found after awakening on the beach. We found a conch shell and used it to summon all the other boys from the plane. The boys and I voted for Ralph to be our chief. We chose Jack Merridew and his choir to be the hunters. I am very upset with Ralph, he told all the boys that my name was Piggy, even after I told him not to. I am sure I ll forgive him soon because for my whole life I have been the subject of jokes, and I have learned to live with it. I already do not like Jack Merridew, and I know he does not like me. I am glad Ralph is chief and not Jack. Ralph, Simon, and Jack went to explore the island without me. My job was to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fire grew out of control, and the kid with a scar on his face disappeared. He was just an innocent kid who was anxious about some beastie. Incidents like that make me worry about getting off this island. Ralph reassured us there is no islands undiscovered, and that it is just a matter of waiting to be found. I am just not so sure about that. How can a person know and keep track of all the islands in the world? Our chance of being saved is slim. If we do not have a signal fire and rules, I believe we do not stand a chance in getting rescued. On a more positive note, I was finally useful today. The boys used my specs to start the fire on the mountain. Although I could not help collect wood because of my asthma, I at least was the one who enabled the fire to happen. Piggy Day Ten Jack and his hunters lost our chance of being saved today. I have never felt this irritated before. I could be on my way home right now but no, Jack and his hunters could not keep the fire going. They could not handle one simple task. They were so caught up in the adrenaline of hunting a pig that nobody cared about returning home. Jack s priorities need to be straightened out, but I do not want to be the one who does it. Jack hates me and finds every opportunity to show it. I am so grateful for Simon. He gave me a piece of his meat after Jack punched me in the stomach and broke my specs. Simon, unlike most of the boys on this island, is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Comparison Of The Chrysanthemums And The White Quail Compare and Contrast The Long Valley Two characters, Elisa Allen and Mary Teller, struggle with the idea of being accepted into the society of the 1930s. Women s rights were not fully accepted in the 1930s, and these two characters were set in the common day view of men and women. In the 1930s, [Society has] assigned to white women such roles as housewife, secretary, PTA chairman, and schoolteacher. Black women can now be schoolteachers, too, but they are most prominently assigned to such domestic roles as maid, cook, waitress, and babysitter (Chisholm 123). These assigned roles have impacted women around the world, including the two characters in these short stories The Chrysanthemums and The White Quail . Not being activists in women s rights, these women conformed to society and lived their lives as any typical housewife in the 1930s. Their passions and choices during this time affected their way of living and relationships. The two stories reflect similarities of the women s love for gardening and lonely marriages, but also reflect their different viewpoints on the world they live in. The two housewives have a passionate love for gardening and bestow their love and appreciation towards their gardens. In the twentieth century, gardening was advocated as beneficial to one s life and family. In the New England Quarterly, the journal, Gardening as Women s Culture in Mary E. Wilkins Freeman s Short Fiction, states, The time women spent in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Truman Doctrine and Iron Curtain Speech The Truman Doctrine and Iron Curtain Speech After World War II, the USSR and United States engaged in an unprecedented conflict called the Cold War. Despite the armaments being produced, this war was not directly fought with thousands of soldiers or massive weapons. An enormous rise in tensions created a competition between the two countries for diplomatic, economic, cultural, and military dominance. Of course, nothing was official until President Harry Truman and Winston Churchill worked together to form a partnership of anti Soviet aggression. The Truman Doctrine and Iron Curtain Speech officially started the Cold War, initiated worldwide indirect fighting, and ended the United States well established policy of isolationism. The Cold War can be easily described as a battle of communism versus capitalism. When Britain announced they can no longer support Greece and Turkey, President Truman feared the domino theory would become a reality and immediately began to develop the Truman Doctrine. This policy would replace Britain as the major benefactor against the USSR s push for world communism, and ignite the rivalry between communism and capitalism in Europe. According to John Mueller, the empty wars that took place were all stemmed out of the bipolar structure of postwar international politics from a contest of ideas. These contrasting ideologies made it easy for tensions to escalate and for sides to be chosen. Additionally, Winston Churchill of Great Britain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Marge Piercy s Poetry Marge Piercy is known for writing poems about women rights and women s negative treatment by society in the 1936s. In her poem What s that smell in the kitchen? she talks about how society see women. According to society, women were raised to cook and clean so women are supposed to have a meal on the table for their husbands. Piercy s attitude toward this statement is that she is mad because there is more quantiles to women than cooking and cleaning. In the poem What that smell in the kitchen? Piercy s use of literary devices expresses how she feels about society treating women. This is why women from all over the world are burning dinners, this is not because they do not know how to cook, but as a protest to society that there is more quantiles to women. Society forces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, in the last stanza Piercy states, Burning dinner is not incompetence but war. . This metaphor helped the reader understand that women from all over the world are burning dinners as a protest to society. This quotation shows how women are tired of being expected to have food on the table for their husbands and clean the house, just because they were raised that way. In addition, the author states, Look she says, once I was roast duck on your platter with parsley, but now I am spam. This literary device allowed the reader to understand how women feels about society making them feel less important. Piercy uses this metaphor as a symbol to show how women were once so respected and powerful, but as time pass their power and respect began to fade away. They were no longer appreciated for what they do. The connotations allowed the reader to figure out the universal truth about women in the poem What s that smell in the kitchen? through the use of metaphors.
