This document proposes a locally adaptive nonlinear (YENI) filter for image local contrast enhancement. The YENI filter adapts to local edge information to find the unsharp mask of an image, preserving edges while filtering out mid-range details. This avoids overshooting/undershooting artifacts often seen with other techniques. The YENI filter is implemented as a single-pole infinite impulse response filter at each pixel location, keeping computational complexity low. Experimental results on real video show improved visual quality compared to other methods, both subjectively and objectively.
