AIMS:
To make them understand the use of Phrases
To present and think of new ideas and improve sentence making
To develop the ability of making correct grammatical sentences
To help them distinguish between different type of phrases
3. Assumed knowledge:
Students have learnt tenses and basic grammar thus they are able to make simple
sentences correctly.
Students have learnt parts of speech.
Students are able to communicate in English
Procedure:
The lesson consist of three stages.
Presentation 15 minutes
Practice (Two Activities) 30 minutes
Production (Two activities) 15 minutes
4. Presentation: (15 minutes)
The teacher shows the students the first realia i.e. a blue pen and asks them ‘what am I
holding?’
The teacher then notes their responses on the board. Anticipated responses of the
students; “a blue pen”. She notices the response on the board.
The teacher tells them to identify the subject and verb in ‘a blue pen’.
“There is no verb, There is no subject” then their responses are linked with the definition
of ‘phrase’. (teacher can give some more examples like ‘a decent black shirt, a beautiful
house etc.’
To further make the students understand about ‘phrases’ the teacher describes phrase and
its features.
The teacher then describes the types of phrases. (Noun phrase and Verb phrase)
5. Phrase
It is a group of words that;
Stands together as a grammatical unit
Doesn’t contain a subject and a verb
For example:
On the table
Chocolate cake from bakery
Noticeably evil
Types of Phrases
• Noun Phrase (The flu clinic)
• Verb Phrase (was hungry to eat Subway)
• Prepositional Phrase (in the class)
• Gerund Phrase
• Infinitive Phrase
• Adjective Phrase
• Adverb Phrase
A noun phrase is a group of two or
more words that contains a noun but
no verb to tell us what the noun is
doing or feeling.
