2. I. THE SIMPLE TENSES

3. A. PRESENT TENSE
Is formed by the infinitive or base form
of the verb or- for the third person
singular- add s or es to the base form.
4. Use the present tense to express :
1.An action that takes place in the present.
ex. Patricia takes piano lessons. (now, in the present)
2. A constant , repeated or habitual action.
ex. She reads bestsellers all the time.
3. A general truth
ex. Steel is an alloy.
5. 4. A permanent condition.
ex. Metro Manila lies in Luzon.
5. An action that will occur in the future.
However , you should provide a word or
clause that indicate future time clearly in
the sentence.
ex. We leave for Boracay next weekend.
6. FORMS :
1. ORDINARY FORM- formed by the base form of the verb
or by adding s or es to the base form (third person
singular)
2. EMPHATIC FORM –do/does + base form of the verb (BV)
* USED TO EMPHASIZE THE ACTION
3. PROGRESSIVE/ CONTINUOUS FORM- am/is/are + V-ing
*USED TO DENOTE ACTION THAT IS GOING ON OR
CONTINUING ACTION

8. B. PAST TENSE
denotes an action that was completed
entirely in the past.
It is formed by adding –d or –ed to
the base form(BV) in regular verbs and
has varied forms in irregular verbs.

1.ORDINARY FORM- formed by adding –d or –
ed to the base form of a regular verb and
varied forms in irregular verbs
2.EMPHATIC FORM – did + Base form of the
Verb (BV)
3.PROGRESSIVE FORM – was / were + V-ing

13. The following are the other ways of expressing Future
tense besides using will or shall
1. am/is/are + going to + BV
Ex. Our school is going to buy a service vehicle
2. am/is/ are + about to +BV
Ex. Our school is about to buy a service vehicle.
3. Present tense of an adverb or an adverbial phrase
that shows future time
Ex. Our school buys a service vehicle next month.

We have just been to the Wax Museum. ( recent past)
I have wanted to see it before. ( Indefinite Past)

last year. ( began in the past and continuing to
present)

Example:
She has been keeping her collection in a
glass cabinet.

is used to express the

actions.
