This document outlines the requirements for a final exam essay that asks students to write a 4-5 paragraph essay defining and explaining a specific American value, giving examples of observing this value in everyday life, and contrasting this value with their own culture. The essay must follow a compare/contrast structure, include an introduction with thesis, topic sentences, transitions between paragraphs, and a conclusion. It also requires at least two in-text citations and allows students to use a notecard for reference information during the exam.

1. Final Exam
Write a short essay (4-5 paragraphs) about an
American value (question following). You will use
your American Ways book as a resource. You
must:
• Write legibly
• Double-space
• Include in-text citations (author’s family name,
“title of article”)
– ie: (Kearny Datesman, et al, 223)

2. Topic:
• Define and explain a specific American value.
Give examples of you have observed this value
existing in everyday life. Contrast this value
with your own culture and how things are
done differently in your culture.

3. Requirements:
• Compare/Contrast Essay Structure
• Introduction with hook, transition, and clear
thesis statement.
• Clear topic sentences and focused body
paragraphs. Transitions between each
paragraph.
• Conclusion with rephrased thesis and clear
strategy
• Use of complex sentence structure and
appropriate vocabulary.

4. In-Text Citations and Note Care
• You must use at least two in-text citations
which includes author name and page
number.
• You will use the notecard provided to have
your resource info during the exam.
