Curcuma longa commonly known as turmeric belongs to the family Zingiberaceae. It is mainly used for treating chronic diseases especially Diabetes mellitus. The present study aims at evaluating the anti-oxidant, anti-haemolytic, anti-angiogenesis and anti-bacterial activities of Curcumin fraction. Different antioxidant assays were carried out for evaluating the antioxidant capacity of aqueous extract of Curcuma longa. The maximum1, 1- diphenyl 2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of curcumin fraction was 30.62±0.87 % at 60 µg/mL concentration. The inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of DPPH˙ radical scavenging activity was 97.97 µg/mL concentration. The maximum superoxide radical scavenging activity of Curcuma longa extract was 57.01±0.17 % at 60 µg/mL concentration and the inhibitory concentration (IC50) was 46.91 µg/mL concentration. The maximum anti-haemolytic activity of curcumin fraction was 44.53±0.84 and the IC50 was 67.37 µg/mL. The maximum Fe3+ reduction and Mo6+ reduction were 54.85±0.35 % and 61.13±0.21 % at 60 µg/mL concentration and the reduction concentration (RC50) were 51.59 µg/mL and 28.69 µg/mL concentration respectively.
Phytochemical Profile and in vitro and in vivo Anticonvulsant and Antioxidant...Self-employed researcher
This study presents the phytochemical profile and in vitro and in
vivo anticonvulsant and antioxidant activities of Epilobium hirsutum, which
has been traditionally used in the treatment of epilepsy by local people of
Turkey. In vitro studies revealed that the extract contained a pronounced
amount of phenolics (206.3±0.9 mg Gallic acid Eq/g extract) and exhibited
significant levels of antioxidant (FRAP; 6226 µmol Fe2+/g extract, ORAC;
6593 µmol Trolox Eq/g extract, DPPH; IC50:33.8 ug/mL and metal chelation;
IC50:114 ug/mL) and anticonvulsant (AChE; IC50:71.2 ug/mL, BChE; IC50:92.5
ug/mL, GABA-T; IC50:94.7 ug/mL) activities. In vivo studies shown that the
the extract exhibited high anticonvulsant activities. In addition, the extracts
regulated the behavior, locomotion, and mental activities of the mice tested.
Biochemical evaluation of the brain tissue revealed that the extract inhibited
the production of MDA and stimulated the increase of antioxidant enzyme
levels, which suggest the possible antioxidative role of the extract that worked
as neuroprotective agents by scarfing the free radicals produced through PTZ
seizure inducer and attenuate convulsions. Moreover the extract regulated
serum biochemical parameters, total antioxidants, total oxidant, and ischemia modified albumin levels. Chromatographic studies were revealed that gallic
acid principally might be the major contributor of anticonvulsant and
antioxidant activities with the additive contributions of fatty acids and mineral
compounds. Findings obtained from this study partially justified the traditional
use of Epilobium hirsutum in the treatment of epilepsy and suggest potential
use of the extract as an industrial or pharmaceutical agent.

Phytochemical characteristics and antioxidant activities of the crude and fractionated plant extracts of Anoectochilus formosanus were evaluated using five different assay systems. An acid-treatment (2 N HCl in 95% ethanol) was employed to treat a butanol fraction (BuOH), creating an acid-hydrolyzed
BuOH fraction. The IC50 values for DPPH radicals in the BuOH and acid-hydrolyzed BuOH fractions were 0.521 and 0.021 mg/mL, respectively. The acid-hydrolyzed BuOH exhibited approximately 5-fold higher activity in scavenging superoxide anion than catechin. The acid-hydrolyzed BuOH fraction
also effectively protected φ x174 supercoiled DNA against strand cleavage induced by H2O2 and reduced oxidative stress in HL-60 cells. Metabolite profiling showed that the aglycones of flavonoid glycosides in BuOH were produced after acid hydrolytic treatment, and this resulted in a significant increase in antioxidant activities of acid-hydrolyzed BuOH. One new diarylpentanoid, kinsenone, and three known flavonoid glycosides and their derivatives were identified for the first time from A. formosanus, with strong antioxidant properties

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

ABSTRACT
Ficus krishnae also known as “Makkhankathor” belongs to family Moraceae and is reported to be highly
medicinal in India. As a folk medicine, the plant is used in treatment of broad range of diseases and
disorders. In the present study the methanol and aqueous extracts of Ficus krishnae was evaluated for its
total phenolic, Flavonoid content, in vitro anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging activity of Ficus
krishnae. Invitro anti-inflammatory activity by inhibition of protein denaturation method and antioxidant
potential of extract was carried out by free radical scavenging activity using 2, 2 diphenyl 1-picryl
hydrazyl (DPPH), ABTS radical scavenging activity, reducing power assay and phosphomolybdenum
assay by using ascorbic acid and BHT as reference standards. Total phenol and flavonoid content of
methanol extracts found to be 0.34mg/g and 0.60mg/g. whereas aqueous extract was to be 0.14mg/g and
0.10mg/g. Invitro anti-inflammatory study of polar solvent extracts has showed that the crude methanol
extract of F.krishnae is a potential source of natural inhibition of protein denaturation and antioxidants
this justified its uses in folkloric medicine.

INTRODUCTION
Inflammation is a local response of body defense
reactions in living mammalian tissues to the
injury, infection or destruction it is characterised
by heat, redness, pain, swelling and disturbed
physiological functions, which eliminate or limit
the spread of injurious agents [1]
.The commonly
used drug for management of inflammatory
conditions are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs, which have several adverse effects
especially gastric irritation leading to formation of
gastric ulcers [2]
.
Antioxidants are compounds capable to either
delay or inhibit the oxidation processes which
occur under the influence of atmospheric oxygen
or reactive oxygen species. They are used for the
stabilization of polymeric products, of
petrochemicals, foodstuffs, cosmetics and
Pharmaceuticals. These basically involved in the
defense mechanism of the organism against the
pathologies associated to the attack of free
radicals. Endogenous and exogenous antioxidants
are the two types of antioxidants, whereas the
endogenous antioxidants are enzymes like,
superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione
peroxidase or nonenzymatic compounds, such as
uric acid, bilirubin, albumin, metallothioneins.
Exogenous antioxidants can be derived from
natural sources (vitamins, flavonoids,
anthocyanins and some mineral compounds), but
can also be the synthetic compounds, like
butylhydroxyanisole, butylhydroxy toluene,
gallates, etc[3]
.Recently, antioxidants have
attracted considerable attention in relation to
radicals and oxidative stress, cancer prophylaxis
and therapy, also longevity [4]
. Phenols and
polyphenols are the target analytes in many such
cases; they may be detected by enzymes like
tyrosinase or other phenol oxidases, or even by
plant tissues containing these enzymes [5]
. Ficus
krishnae is a very large, fast growing; evergreen
tree grow up to 30 m tall, with spreading branches
and aerial roots belongs to the family Moraceae. [6,

The unique feature of the leaves have a pocket-
like structure at the base. All parts of the plants
are used to cure diseases of ‘Kapha’ also useful in
treatment of ulcers,vomiting, vaginal complaints,
fever, inflammations and leprosy. Latex is
