Interaction and communications are integral to the flow of my civics class. Students maintain a student blog for each class, containing a summary of class events and homework assignments. Additionally, technology facilitates simulations which help students to integrate civics concepts into their daily understanding of reality. For example, in Mock Congress, students apply their prior study of the Constitution to a simulation of the legislative process—complete with lobbyists, press, and (virgin) cocktail parties—to understand how the system works by living it. Take-home tests and dynamic projects also provide them with opportunities to collaborate and communicate in innovative ways.
Affects Of War
During World War 1, large numbers of white women worked in factories and jobs previously closed to them, though they faced resentment and returned to traditional roles after the war. The labor shortage also opened jobs to racial minorities like Mexican-Americans and blacks, though racial discrimination continued. Prohibition was enacted to conserve resources for the war effort and promote temperance. The Treaty of Versailles established the League of Nations but faced opposition in the US Senate, resulting in America not joining the League. The consequences of the war included US economic leadership but also bitterness and instability that contributed to WWII.
Intrinsically Motivating Student Achievement by Alternative Assessment
Innovative educational authors and thinkers often identify the tradition of conventional testing as a core obstacle in overhauling education. While “teaching to the test” draws near universal ire, most of us continue the old routine: lesson -> homework practice -> quiz -> test -> next unit -> lesson -> practice, etc. Students are warned to pay attention and take quality notes in order to perform well on the omnipresent test. Wouldn’t it be great if students enjoyed coming to class because they embraced ownership of their own learning and found the material to be both relevant and engaging?
Over the years, I have found ways of overhauling the structure of my classroom to transfer the ownership of the learning to the students via a combination of mutual respect and an alternative grading strategy. My methods include rich participation metrics, diverse projects and effective editing. Innovative assessments are not only possible within the constraints of conventional external grades, but students and parents embrace them. Diverse classrooms of students at different skill levels can also be readily accommodated. In addition to outlining methodologies, ready-to-use assessment tools will be provided for teachers to use directly or adapt to their needs.

The 1920s saw social and cultural changes like women's suffrage and Prohibition, but also violence like the Sacco and Vanzetti case and Wall Street bombing. The stock market crashed in 1929, plunging the US into the Great Depression. President Hoover initially responded through public works projects and urging cooperation from business leaders, but unemployment rose sharply. By 1932, Hoover had lost public support and Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected promising a new approach.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
