The mix of ever-smarter mobile devices and the constant connectivity of wireless networks have changed the way users access applications—and the way we develop and test them. Deployed applications deliver different content and functionality depending on whether the user is accessing them via a browser, smartphone, or tablet. And applications are accessed over myriad network configurations, including wireless and mobile networks. Brad Stoner presents an in-depth look at performance testing challenges for mobile applications including recording from devices, playing back device-specific requests, and accounting for variances in users’ geographical locations. Discover some of the best mobile performance testing approaches such as emulating mobile networks with varying connection speeds, packet loss, and latency during load tests. Find out when to use real devices vs. emulators to ensure high mobile application performance delivery to all end-users, at all times—on any device or network.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

7signal is the Wi-Fi Performance Company.
We’re focused on improving the wi-fi experience for people so that they can get they’re jobs done. We’re focused on making organizations more productive so that they can gain a competitive advantage as a result.
We want to learn about your environment and your challenges…
We are in the middle of a cultural shift, where devices and mobility drive personal productivity and operational efficiency.
Mobility defines us, it’s who we are, not something we do or a technology we engage.
As a result, the wireless LAN market is huge and growing.
This is all especially true in manufacturing and in distribution centers.
Inventory control and tracking is mission critical and if the Wi-Fi is flaky in any way, it can cause serious productivity issues.
Same thing in healthcare. Not only is there wireless telemetry for monitoring patients, but doctors and nurses depend on the Wi-Fi network to connect to patient record systems.
Retail is undergoing a huge transformation.
They must create digital, wireless in-store experiences if they are to stay competitive with Amazon.com
If we expect a culture of innovation, then it requires collaboration.
And collaboration requires high performance Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi is mission critical because so many transactions are tied to it. Whether you’re working on financials. Or a customer is placing an order with you. Or you’re in sales and trying to submit that multi-million dollar proposal before 5 o’clock. Or you’re in purchasing and your distribution centers are depending on you to deliver.
Here’s the issue – if wi-fi is so mission critical, then why aren’t we managing it like a strategic asset?
We manage other systems and applications, but not the wi-fi network or the myriad of wireless devices on the network.
So here is how our solution works –
This is your Wi-Fi network.
(click)
First, add our Sapphire Eye to the network, which is a high performance client that benchmarks Wi-Fi performance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It connects to our test endpoint called a Sonar, which you can place in your data center or anywhere else on your network. Sonar provides BOTH wireless and wired experience testing.
The Sapphire Eye tells you what your network is capable of in the specified area. As your environment changes over time with new access points, software and devices, you can track and trend performance.
Next, you add in our Mobile Eye for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac so that you can crowdsource the actual experience that your people are having on the Wi-Fi network for their own devices.
All the data is sent to our EyeQ Cloud where you can log into the EyeQ console and get complete network visibility, as well as a detailed performance history of every device in every location.
What you get today from your AP vendor is good – but it’s only part of the story. It’s an infrastructure point of view.
You can see whether AP’s have joined the network. You can get CPU and memory statistics, bandwidth utilization – and identify who the bandwidth hogs are on your network. Alternatively, you can take your Wi-Fi troubleshooting tool and walk over to the problem area. But what if the problem area is 3,000 miles away?
But there are key things you won’t be able to get – like the crowdsourcing of performance data from every Wi-Fi device and visibility into how those devices are actually experiencing the network. And that’s how 7signal is different (click)
We manage change.
You have people, devices and equipment randomly moving in and out of your environment every minute of every hour of everyday. Your organization’s ability to manage change is what keeps you competitive. 7signal gives you visibility of different clients in different locations that need to access different parts of your network.
7signal is the “black box recorder” tracking performance history by device and by location – which is especially critical when you are trying to figure out what happened yesterday or last week.
This is our product lineup
Here are some folks who are using it across a variety of vertical markets…
This is a quote from one of our customers, a CIO of a major hospital system, who views our technology as something strategic to his organization.
He knows his situation is only going to grow more complicated over time as wireless becomes more embedded into everyday operations.
You can log into EyeQ and proactively see which devices are slow.
Many times when people complain about your Wi-Fi network, they don’t know or can’t remember which network they were actually on when they had the trouble to begin with.
Here, we can see that Tom has been on all sorts of networks over the time period in question.
When Tom reported slow throughput, it’s very possible he was connected to one of the slower GUEST networks, perhaps even by accident!
But it’s clear from this report that Tom certainly has no issues with Wi-Fi when he’s connected to the CORPORATE network.
Customize your targets and test endpoints on the Profiles page.
Here is where you set Periodic Test Interval, or time in between tests.
This is also where you set your Wi-Fi experience targets for your different Key Performance Indicators. This is what controls when results turn yellow, red or green.
And finally, I want to tell you about the Periodic Test SSIDs feature.
This is a great privacy feature that ensures the app does not take Wi-Fi performance tests UNLESS you are on the specified network.
So in other words, if this box is checked, then you will only see results from devices on this network. However, there are use cases where you may want to know if people are on other networks because it assists you in troubleshooting.
Like in this case…(click)
Android, Windows and macOS devices can give us a lot of rich, valuable information about the connection, like Data Rate, Frequency, Channel and Signal Strength. All of which goes a long way to understanding device behavior in different locations on different networks.
Using location information from your devices, we can plot Wi-Fi performance data on a Google Map so that you can actually SEE where the Wi-Fi is good and where it’s bad, across your entire network.
When I drill into Throughput, the map changes to reflect the level of compliance to your service level.
You can easily see areas of red that are slow and deserve a closer look.
Here, we are comparing the corporate network to the guest network. You can do the same thing for devices, platforms, access points, software versions…
Let’s look at some use cases for our patented Wi-Fi sensor
Sapphire Eyes track over 600 key performance indicators. But we simplify it down to 4 Macro KPIs that answer 4 critical Wi-Fi performance questions:
Can clients connect to the Wi-Fi network?
Can they get an IP Address?
Can they authenticate to the network?
What’s the quality of their Wi-Fi experience?
We track this historically over time to easily identify issues in dynamic environments.
Here’s some of what’s behind these Big 4 KPIs
It starts with an alert email to your inbox.
Here you can see a beacon availability alert. You know what, where and when – at a glance.
You can get the same thing with DHCP server alerts. You get what, where and when…
Here’s something that’s difficult to see without our solution…
Are you achieving the performance targets that you set?
As you can see the HT40 high throughput channel in our 7signal office is doing great with throughput averaging 150Mbps for the time period measured.
Here’s another important use case in lots of places…
How is the Guest Network really doing? Everyone has visitors and we don’t want guests gobbling up all our corporate bandwidth. So many organizations will cap the guest network at 5 Mbps. We can see here that our configuration is doing what is intended.
Earlier we talked about our Sonar test endpoint. Our customers use it to test different legs of their network.
Here is a typical network
Then we strategically place Sonars around the network to test both wired and wireless connections.
Now, we can easily identify where we have issues. In this case, it was firewall configuration.
But once the configuration was changed, we immediately saw an increase in throughput across the entire network. That’s the power of Sonar.
