An elimination reaction such as the dehydration of ethanol is described. In this type of reaction, an alcohol molecule reacts to form a smaller alkene molecule and a water molecule. The structure of the molecules changes from tetrahedral to planar. Specifically, ethanol can be dehydrated to ethene using heat and an aluminum oxide catalyst in order to prepare ethene.
