Analysis of Anions and Cations in Produced Water from Hydraulic Fracturing Using Ion Chromatography
This presentation describes the use of ion chromatography (IC) to determine anions and cations in produced water from three different hydraulic fracturing sites. Considerable variation in ion concentration was found, which was attributed to differences in the geology of the locations from which samples were obtained.
Ensuring potable water for public consumption is a major Public Health Concern. This presentation sums up all the necessary and prioritized parameters conducted for water analysis.
Analysis of Cations in Hydraulic Fracturing Flowback Water from the Marcellus Shale Using Ion Chromatography
This presentation describes the determination of cations in hydraulic fracturing flowback water using ion chromatography. In this work, sodium was most abundant, followed by calcium, strontium, magnesium, potassium, barium, ammonium, and then lithium, respectively. The quantity of scale-forming ions, such as calcium, strontium, and barium, is particularly informative because it can be used to determine the amount of anti-scaling agent in fracturing fluid mix that will maximize hydrocarbon recovery.
Wastewater is produced by multiple sources, including chemical manufacturing, power generation, petroleum product extraction, and private residences. Specific industries can use knowledge of around the analytes present in wastewater to make decisions on reuse, treatment, or whether disposal is the most cost effective option. Prior to any discharge into ground or surface waters, the level of specific analytes must be determined to ensure that they do not exceed regulated limits. If these limits are being exceeded, treatment will be required. Ion Chromatography (IC) is the primary technique used for measuring the concentration of ions in wastewater and numerous methods have been developed that meet regulatory requirements. Learn about IC methods that enable accurate, consistent, and rapid measurement of both anions, such as chloride, sulfate, and bromate, and cations, such as sodium and magnesium.

Determination of benzotriazoles in water samples by polyethersulfone solid-ph...Jorge Casado Agrelo
In this work, we investigate the suitability of a commercial available and low cost polyethersufone (PES) sorbent for the microextraction of 1H-benzotriazole (BTri), and four polar derivatives (4 and 5-methyl-1H-benzotriazole, 4-TTri and 5-TTri; 5,6-dimethyl-1H benzotriazole, XTri; and 5-chloro-1H-benzotriazole, 5-ClBTri) from surface and wastewater samples. The performance of liquid chromatography (LC) combined with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (QTOF-MS) for the selective determination of target compounds is also discussed. Parameters affecting the efficiency of the microextraction step, such as sample’s pH, ionic strength, stirring speed and extraction lapse of time, and the PES membrane desorption process have been thoroughly investigated. Analytes were extracted from 15 mL samples, containing a 30% of sodium chloride and adjusted at pH 4.5, using a tubular PES sorbent (5 cm length x 0.7 mm o.d., sorbent volume 42 μL). After methanol desorption and solvent exchange, benzotriazoles were determined by LC-MS, with chromatograms extracted using a mass window of 20 ppm, centered in their [M+H]+ ions. The identity of chromatographic peaks was confirmed with accurate ion product scan (MS/MS) spectra. The method provided limits of quantification (LOQs) between 0.005 and 0.1 ng mL-1, and relative recoveries from 81% to 124% (except for XTri in sewage samples, ca. 60%) with associated standard deviations between 2% and 9%. The efficiency of the PES sorbent for the extraction of these compounds has been compared with that attained by stir-bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) covered stir bars. The PES polymer achieved significant higher responses (5- to 20-fold) for these polar pollutants. To the best of our knowledge, this research constitutes the first application of both techniques (microextraction using a PES sorbent and LC-QTOF-MS) for benzotriazoles determination in water samples. The method was used to provide data regarding the levels of target compounds in river and urban wastewater samples, including the individual quantification of 4-methyl and 5-methyl-benzotriazole isomers. Obtained results confirmed the ubiquity of benzotriazole, 4-methyl and 5-methyl-benzotriazole in urban wastewater and their incomplete removal at sewage treatment plants

Microbial catalysis of syngas fermentation into biofuels precursors - An expe...Pratap Jung Rai
Search for environment-friendly sustainable energy sources is of global interest due to continuous depletion of fossil fuels resources and excessive carbon dioxide emissions. Syngas fermentation is one of the promising sustainable alternative for liquid biofuel and chemical production from energy content wastes/byproducts. This study mainly focuses on acetic acid and ethanol production via fermentation, using hydrogen and carbon dioxide as substrates to mimic syngas. A laboratory scale, batch fermentation was performed at different headspace pressure ranged from 0.29 to 1.51 bar, 1200 rpm stirrer speed, and 22±1.4ºC.
Formation of acetic acid and ethanol were found significant. The maximum acetic acid concentration 68 mmol/L was obtained at 1176 hours and 1.12 bar headspace pressure. However, maximum ethanol concentration of 15 pA*s was found at 1297 hours and 1.51 bar headspace pressure. Ethanol consumption was observed during first 553 hours. Maximum H2 consumption rate was 0.153 mmol/h•gVS during 478-527 hours at 1.12 bar headspace pressure, which was 51 times higher than that obtained during first 71 hours at 0.29 bar headspace pressure (0.003 mmol/h• gVS). The total consumed hydrogen gas measure as COD (CODHydrogen) was equivalent to the increase in bulk liquid COD, 11.02 gCOD and 11.44 gCOD; in which 68% of CODHydrogen was converted to acetic acid (7.44 gCOD). A significant influence of headspace pressure and dissolved hydrogen concentration were observed on the volumetric mass (H2) transfer coefficient (kLa) and the solubility of hydrogen in the inoculum (CH). The maximum kLa and CH of 0.082 h-1 (R2 = 0.995) and 1.2 10-3 mol/L were found at 1.12 bar headspace pressure and 89 mmol/L dissolved hydrogen concentration, respectively. The calculated biomass yields ranged from 0.001-0.066 and 0.001-0.059 gVSS/gCOD, for acetic acid and ethanol formation, respectively, when the assumption of free energy efficiency use in growth was changed from 0.1 to 1.
Acetic acid and ethanol were dominant final product whereas other organic acids were almost constant and insignificant throughout the experiment. This implies that the microbial fermentation of hydrogen and carbon dioxide at headspace pressure ranged from 0.29-1.51 bar, 1200 rpm stirrer speed, and 22±1.4ºC, can be performed with digested food waste sludge for efficient acetic acid and ethanol production.

Arch guide (1) Guide to the BIS archivesJohn M Riggs
This guide to the BIS Archives is the key to the Bank for International Settlements’ (BIS)
collection of historical records that are over thirty years old and can be freely accessed by
researchers.
The BIS was created in 1930 by the Hague Conference as an international financial
organisation. Ever since, its key mandate has been to foster cooperation among central banks
and other agencies in pursuit of monetary and financial stability. Initially mainly focused on
Europe, the BIS, from the 1960s onward, became increasingly global in its activities and
outreach. Today it brings together sixty member central banks, representing countries from
around the world that together make up about 95% of world GDP. Apart from its headquarters
in Basel, Switzerland, the BIS has two representative offices, one for Asia and the Pacific in
Hong Kong SAR (since 1998), and one for the Americas in Mexico City (since 2002).
Throughout its history, the BIS has been involved in many historical events and developments
in the monetary and financial sphere. These include the repercussions of the world financial
crisis of 1931, the rebuilding of European multilateral payments in the 1950s, the transatlantic
management of the Bretton Woods system in the 1960s, and the international efforts to deal
with the fall-out of inflation and of the banking and debt crises in the 1970s through the 1990s.
The BIS played an important role in the early history of European monetary unification (before
the foundation of the European Monetary Institute in Frankfurt in 1994). It also hosts the
experts from the global banking regulation and supervision community, who have been
responsible for developing an International Capital Framework (known consecutively as Basel
Accord, Basel II and Basel III), a global agreement aimed at strengthening capital adequacy
rules for internationally active banks.
History can only be studied on the basis of properly organised and accessible source material.
Although the BIS as an international organisation is not bound by any national freedom of
information legislation, its Board of Directors decided in 1997 to voluntarily open for research
the Bank’s historical files that are over thirty years old. It is our hope that the publication of this
guide to the BIS Archives will provide a useful tool to any researcher wanting to shed light on
the history of international monetary and financial cooperation in general and of the BIS in
particular.

Naf-Tech combustion enhancer is a South-African product. Naf-Tech is a proprietary mixture of hydrocarbons that reduces the surface tension of the fuel when activated. Targeted activation ensures that Naf-Tech will not alter the distinct characteristics of the base fuel before the physical injection of the fuel takes place.
Naf-Tech improves fuel vaporisation during injection thereby increasing the burn velocity of the fuel transforming more of the fuel’s potential energy into mechanical energy. Naf-Tech is widely used in various applications such as transport, mining, earthmoving, diesel generators and shipping.
Naf-Tech is used by a number of companies, some of which are listed on the JSE. The majority of these companies have been using Naf-Tech for several years and have also concluded successful R&D programs using Naf-Tech.
