  • 2. IslamToday ■ Over 1.5 billion people are Muslim – ¼ of the world ■ Majority in the Middle East, but spread throughout the world
  • 3. Muhammad (570-632) ■ Muslims consider him the messenger and prophet of Allah ■ Grew up as a merchant and shepherd in Mecca ■ Bedouin – nomadic tribesmen
  • 4. Muhammad ■ Disillusioned by the corruption and decadence of society ■ Went to a cave to meditate and reflect ■ Visited by the angel Gabriel who gave him revelations
  • 5. Qur’an ■ “Recitation” ■ Contains the wisdom and teachings received through revelation ■ Compiled after Muhammad’s death ■ Composed of 114 Chapters (Suras) ■ Arranged by chapter length – Not by theme or chronology ■ Can only be properly read in Arabic
  • 6. BasicTeachings ■ Monotheistic – Allah is the all-powerful creator of the universe ■ Old and NewTestaments were corrupted by humanity, needed a new interpretation ■ Heavenly paradise for the faithful after death

Creation of Islam ■ Began preaching in Mecca – Ignored by most people – Seen as a threat to traditional society ■ Muslims were attacked and persecuted ■ Hijra (622) – Muhammad and his followers flee to Medina from Mecca – Marks the start of the Islamic calendar – Group became the first Muslim community – the Umma
  • 8. Return to Mecca ■ Islam gained influence and popularity in Medina ■ Muhammad amassed a large army, defeated the Meccan army ■ Returned to Mecca ■ Cleansed the Kaaba of idols and made it the most sacred shrine in Islam
  • 9. Five Pillars of Islam ■ Basic code of ethics: ■ Profession of Faith (shahada) ■ Prayers (salah) ■ Fasting (sawm) ■ Alms (zakat) ■ Pilgrimage (hajj)
  • 10. Five Pillars of Islam ■ Profession of Faith (shahada) – "(I profess that) there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of God.” ■ Must know and believe this creed without suspicion

  • 13. Five Pillars of Islam ■ Alms (zakat) – give charitable donations to the needy ■ Eliminate inequality and assist those in the community ■ Can be paid in good deeds and behavior if short on money
  • 14. Five Pillars of Islam ■ Pilgrimage (hajj) – must make a trip to Mecca once in a lifetime ■ Visit the holiest sites in Islam and reaffirm one’s faith
  • 15. Pilgrimage ■ Circumambulate the Kaaba – cube-shaped shrine containing a black meteorite – First built by Adam then reconstructed by Abraham ■ Over 1 million pilgrims travel each year

  • 17. Islamic Art ■ Much of the art does not include the depiction of humans – Fear that this was idolatry, prohibited in the Qur’an – Offensive to depict Muhammad at any time
