This is a depiction of the prophet Mohammad* The prophet Mohammad was born about A.D. 570 in the city of Mecca At age 40 Mohammad received a number of visions from the angel Gabriel * This "portrait" of the Prophet comes from Alexander Ross's  PAHSEBEIA, or A View of all Religions in the World  (1683)
He was convinced that these revelations were the Word of God In 613 Mohammad began to preach to his people He began to teach that there was only God—Allah
All people must worship and obey him Mohammad preached that all people who believed in God were equal The teachings of Mohammad were not well received in Mecca
The Meccans feared that the pilgrimages would stop Finally, in A.D. 622 Mohammad and his followers fled Mecca and went to Yathrib Muhammad became spiritual and political ruler of Yathrib
The city of Yathrib accepted Muhammad with open arms They viewed Muhammad as the messenger of God Yathrib changed its name to Medina, “the city of the prophet.”
The cities of Medina and Mecca engaged in armed conflict Finally, in A.D. 630 the leaders of Mecca surrendered to Muhammad By the time of Mohammad’s death in A.D. 632 the Islam religion included the Arabian peninsula
 
The holy book of Islam is called the Quran The Quran dictates to the Muslims how they should live and worship The Muslims are forbidden to gamble, eat pork and drink alcoholic beverages.
Five Pillars of Islam Faith:  A person must state a belief that there is no God but Allah and that Mohammad is his prophet Prayer:  A person must pray to Allah, facing Mecca, five times every day Alms:  A person must give aid to the poor people through a tax Fasting:  A person must eat only one meal per day, after sunset, every day during the holy month Ramadan Pilgrimage: A person should perform the  hajj  (a trip to the holy city of Mecca) at least once in his or her lifetime.
