5 Management Lessons from Elephants
1. The Almighty God created a wide variety of animals with
different levels of intelligence. Elephants are magnificent
creatures that have fascinated us with their strength and
intelligence. Here are five management lessons we can
learn from them and apply them to our workplace.

2. Listen to Mentors
Elephants are not born with innate survival instincts and hence rely on their elders to
be mentored. Likewise, we need to learn from and listen to our mentors who
through their expertise and experience can enhance our skills and abilities
maximizing our success potential.
3. Wait for Recognition
Elephants take a long time to grow and learn to use their trunks in different ways. Being
slow and steady is not considered cool by many people. They expect to get results faster
and easier so that they are recognized as ‘high achievers’ in the workplace. However, we
need to take the time to plan things properly as most often people fail when they forget
to do their homework. Always remember that it takes time to gain the respect of others.
4. Develop a Thick Skin
An elephant’s skin is about an inch think and is extremely tough. Many of us do not take
criticism well. Whether it is a peer response or rejection of an idea by the company’s
management, we tend to become negative and wallow ourselves in self-pity and doubt.
We should take criticism positively and constructively. Strive to learn objectively from
these interactions and glean the wisdom out of the experience.
5. Use the Strengths
Elephants use their trunks like snorkels for breathing and have the ability to pick up a single
blade of grass or rip a whole tree. We should know to use our strengths optimally for
accomplishing our tasks and goals. Each one of us is endowed with a unique talent and ability
that makes us different from others. Whether it is our skill to negotiate with people or work
under pressure or make tough decisions when the situation demands, we will always have
chances to exhibit our strengths and capabilities.
6. Communicate Well
Elephants use a wide variety of methods to communicate. For example, their rumbles can
travel in the air and through the ground. In this era of digital communication, we can use a
wide variety of tools to effectively connect with our peers, managers, and clients. Analyzing
the situation and using the appropriate tool will decide the effectiveness of the message
conveyed.
7. An Important Note: Elephants need our help as their numbers are dwindling due to
illegal poaching activities. Please spread the message to save these highly perceptive
and sensitive creatures from extinction. Refrain from buying ivory products and ask
your friends and colleagues to do the same.
Thank You!
