CD4+ T cells play an expanding role in antiviral immunity beyond just helping B and CD8+ T cell responses. CD4+ T cells can directly inhibit viruses as well as enhance innate immune responses. Following viral infection, CD4+ T cells differentiate into various subsets like TH1, TH2, and TH17 cells to clear the virus. Memory CD4+ T cells provide rapid protection upon reinfection through their effector functions.
