This document reviews the transcriptional programming of dendritic cell subsets. It discusses:
1) Dendritic cells are a heterogeneous group divided into subsets based on location and surface markers, including conventional dendritic cells, plasmacytoid dendritic cells, Langerhans cells, and monocyte-derived dendritic cells.
2) The differentiation of dendritic cell subsets is controlled by cytokines and transcription factors. Hematopoietic progenitors in the bone marrow differentiate into precursor cells that migrate and further differentiate into the different dendritic cell subsets in response to local environmental cues.
