This document discusses factors that influence language learning strategies. It analyzes motivation, gender, experiences studying abroad, aptitude, and psychological/personality traits. The document reviews several studies that found females tend to use more memory and metacognitive strategies than males. Studying abroad was found to influence students' thinking and learning. Aptitude and personality were also deemed important factors as successful language learners have different strengths. The document concludes that determination, stable emotion, and strong mind control are needed to learn a new language.

2. 1) MOTIVATION




According to Gardner (1985), motivation and attitudes are
the primary sources contributing to individual language
learning.
Gardner has described the phenomenon of motivation as
consisting of four components: a goal, effort, want, and
attitudes toward the learning activity.
Dörnyei (2001), one of the well-known leaders within the
field of motivation also states, generally, motivation can be
a matter explaining why people decide to do something,
how long they are willing to sustain the activity, and how
hard they are going to pursue it.
On my opinion, motivation is one of the factor because
language learner want to succeed in their learning process
thus, they always motivate themselves to apply the





In a recent study, Hong-Nam and Leavell (2006), for
example, investigated learning strategy use of 55 students
learning English as a second language (ESL) with differing
cultural and linguistic background.
The results showed the students preferred to use
Metacognitive strategies, whereas they depicted the least
use of Affective and Memory strategies in overall strategy.
Mean differences revealed that females engaged in
strategy use more frequently than males.
Also, female participants reported using Social and
Metacognitive strategies most and Memory strategies the
least, while males favored the use of Metacognitive and
Compensation strategies most and Affective strategies the
least.

There’s also Green and Oxford’s (1995) study,
demonstrating that gender was one of factors
affecting the choices of language learning
strategies.
That is, females used Memory and
Metacognitive strategies more frequently than
males.
In my opinion, I think that gender gives a big
affect on using LLS.
Most study researched show that female use
more memory strategies than male.

Purdie and Oliver (1999) said the language learning
strategies used by bilingual school-aged children coming
from three main cultural groups:
Asian (predominantly Vietnamese or Chinese dialect
speakers).
European (children who spoke Greek and those who
identified themselves as speakers of Macedonian).
Speakers of Arabic.
Purdie and Oliver’s study also confirmed a research made
by Opper, Teichler, and Carlson’s (1990) studying abroad
programs in Europe and The United States .
The result stated that studying abroad is deemed to have
an influence on students’ thought and learning style,
especially in their actual ability in language learning.

In my opinion, studying abroad can be the
factor because in order to blend in with the
environment, one must learn, the culture, the
habit and of course, the language of the
country.






Many teachers end researchers come to see ability as
irrelevant to the process of language acquisition. (Mustafa

Successful language learners may not be strong in all of
the components of their capabilities. (Mustafa Baran)
One could determine learners’ profiles of strengths and
weaknesses and use this information to place students in
appropriate teaching programs. (Mustafa Baran)
In my opinion, one’s ability to learn language faster is also
one of the factors.
When they manage to understand and to learn the
language faster than anyone, they can easily apply any of
the strategies to make the language learning more

PSYCHOLOGICAL/PERSONALIT

Ehrman and Oxford (1989) concluded that the relationship
between language learning strategy use and personality
type (as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
MBTI) is far from straightforward.
Ehrman and Oxford (1990) then concluded in a later study
that psychological type appears to have a strong influence
on the way learners use language learning strategies.
Personality variables may be a major factor only in the
acquisition of conversational skills, not in the acquisition of
literacy skills. (Mustafa Baran)
Mustafa Baran also stated that many researchers believe
that personality will be shown to have an important
influence on success in language learning.

In my opinion, psychological and personality is
important and they do affect LLS because
every language learner must have the
determination, stable emotion and a great
mind control to learn a new language.
