- Customized Training within the community college system is a state-supported workforce education and training program to serve eligible employers. These include manufacturing, technology intensive companies, regional or national warehousing and distribution centers and customer support centers. The goal is to foster and support three key aspects of a company's well-being: Job Growth, Technology Investment and Productivity Enhancement. SCC has 9 eligible companies within its service area: Jackson Paper HomeTex ConMet Shaw (Bryson City) Drake Caterpillar TekTone DuoTech Shaw (Franklin) Since 2008 SCC has worked with these companies through state approved projects or special funding to provide 14,587 contact hours of training to 751 employees.
- The Small Business Center is part of a statewide network designed to support the development and growth of small businesses. The SBC offers a multi-faceted approach to facilitating business development by providing prospective and current small business owners with a central point of contact for information, education, and assistance. This comes in the form of one on one counseling as well as a series of seminars and classes that are focused on the entrepreneur. During the past year Tiffany Henry, the SBC Director has spent 255 hours with 50 distinct clients doing one on one counseling. These sessions have covered all aspects of small business including helping them to develop a business plan, sorting out financial statements and working on projections or working on applications for a variety of loan opportunities available to small business. In addition to counseling Tiffany held 57 seminars and had 798 students registered in these classes. As a result of these efforts our SBC saw 21 new businesses started this year with the creation of 151 new jobs and retention of 23 jobs. - Each year the state recognizes one of the 58 directors as “Rookie of the Year.” This award is presented to a new director having been with the Network two years or less who has shown growth in SBC performance since becoming an SBC Director and/or demonstrated success in a "turn-around" situation, or shown other exceptional performance. This years winner was Tiffany Henry. Upon accepting this position Tiffany immediately reached out across the service area to every possible resource to form partnerships. "Output" increased in every aspect with Tiffany at the helm. In addition to the increase she found time to organize and coordinate two business plan competitions. One in Macon County and one in Dillsboro. These competitions were well received and 8 businesses were started as a result with 18 new jobs created.
- FY 14-15 *Creative Business Plan Competition – 14 applicants participating in an 8-week training series designed to help them turn their craft into a viable business, or take their business to the next level. Winner of this competition will be awarded $3,000 and be featured in one exhibition in each county. *Appalachian Farm School – a pilot program designed to centralize agricultural business training in a single program for farmers in the seven western counties. This program has provided a “one-stop” program in which farmers accessed low-cost agribusiness resources from around the region over nine weeks of evening classes. The AFS was developed by partners from Cooperative Extension, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, SCC’s SBC, NC REAL, TenBiz, and WCU’s Public Policy Institute. The AFS is a program of the WNC Food Policy Council (WNCFPC) with support from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. *WCU Partnership – placed 16 small biz owners with student teams for various projects Assisted with WCU’s CEI to launch first LEAD: Innovation –Entrepreneurship and Small Business Summit
- Occupational Training programs prepare the individual for current in-demand jobs in our service area. These programs give you the help and the tools you need for a successful career. These non-degree courses and programs offer flexible schedules, with start dates and registration ongoing throughout the year. Some of the courses we currently offer: Table Gaming Pharmacy Technician Professional Office Management Bar Tending ICD 10 Medical Coding Brewing, Fermentation and Distillation Computer Technician Electronic Health Records Office Professional
- SCC seeks to help graduates and community members maintain certifications and licensure through continuing education and recertification programs. During the past year we have held 28 classes and helped 261 students with their credentials. We are continually adding new courses as the job market changes to insure the licensure requirement for many careers is met.
