Review: Library Session
(Discussion)
O Whole group – general feedback:
O What was useful to you?
O What were the main points included in the
session?
O Accessing scholarly articles (course guides –
ESL 015 -- and Lion Search)
O Evaluating sources (handout)
O Citation tools (on the back of the handout)
O Research assignment planning tool
O Suggestion: It would be nice to email Rachel
to say thank you.
Library Session Group
Discussion
O 1) Where/How can you access reliable,
published information in your field?
O 2) How can you evaluate sources?
O 3) What are some tools available for
creating Works Cited pages?
Conversation Starter 1
O When I was a child, I was interested in solving puzzles
and logic problems, and to my surprise, my
introductory electrical engineering course, digital logic,
felt very similar in nature and in approach to solving
those types of problems. Some people become
interested their majors because of their interests (like
me) and others are more interested in the potential
jobs and salaries associated with particular majors. So
what’s the reason that you are interested in your
current major or job? (Ryan, Electrical Engineering)
Conversation Starter 2
O Have you ever heard about the website Linkedin? It is
a social networking site that is mainly used by
professionals. It allows users to make an account in
order to share their professional information and
experiences, and to share their resumes. If you had a
profile on this social networking site, which
professional information would you like to share about
yourself? (agriculture engineering / Brenda)
Conversation Starter 3
O Gestures are motions of the hands, head, or body
to emphasize an idea or emotion, especially while
speaking. And gesture is a very helpful non-verbal
aspect of communication for precise delivery and
personal expression. What are the most interesting
gestures you have seen in the U.S. ? What are
some interesting gestures in your native country?
(Linguistics)(Sung Jun)
Leap Chapter 7 Goals –pg.123
O Learn vocabulary terms related to risk-taking,
innovation, and overcoming failure
O Comprehend a lecture about risk
O Comprehend a podcast about innovation
O Comprehend a conversation about
overcoming failure
O Paraphrasing
Risk: Would You Do THIS?
O Video
Risk-Taking Quiz
O Instructions: Read the questions in
your group. Share your answers.
Keep track of your own answers on
your paper (for scoring).
O Note: Several vocabulary words from
the chapter are underlined.
Scoring
O For every answer A, award yourself 1 point
O
For every answer B, award yourself 2 points
O
For every answer C, award yourself 3 points
O 5-7 Very conservative. Check your pulse. Are you still alive? What are
you doing with your life? It is surprising that you even risked taking this
quiz.
O 8-10 - Nervous Nelly. Maybe it’s time for you step it up. Do you want to
be more adventurous? and Experience more grandeur? If so, you will
have to try a little harder.
O 11-13 Risk Master. Nice. You are the ideal risk taker. You know how
to balance risk with reward. This is exactly where you want to be. You
know how to have a good time and to be very successful.
O 13-15 You’re the Pusher. You like to push the envelope. That’s great,
just be careful that you don’t fall for schemes that leave you with
empty bank accounts. Scale it back from time to time. Risk is not its
own reward.
