 Conversation Starters
 Introduce and Prepare for the PSU Student Interview
Project
Conversation Starter 1

 Political slogans are usually used during the presidential
election seasons to shape the image of the candidates and
parties. The slogan of president Obama was “change” in
2008 (at that time, the president was George W. Bush of the
Republican party) and “forward” in 2012 (It was his
second challenge as a president). Are there any famous
political slogans in your country? or Do you know any
interesting political slogans? (Politics)(Sukyeong Yeon)
Conversation Starter 2

 One of the fields of study within agricultural
engineering is post harvest. The purpose of this
subject is to study techniques that minimize post-harvest
losses. Do you know anything about this
issue? What can be done at home to maximize the
lifetime of your food? (Agricultural
Engineering/Brenda)
Conversation Starter 3

 A logo is one of the most important elements in
establishing a brand or an organization in the
market. What is the most important factor in creating
a successful logo? Why? And what is the most
popular logo in your country?(Business)(SungJun)
PSU Student Interview Project

 Big Idea: For this project, you will:
 prepare interview questions about academic life at
PSU
 videotape a 7-10 minute interview with a PSU student
 transcribe (write down) 1 minute of the interview
 and complete a transcription-analysis handout
Steps and Dates
 Learn about the assignment in class (10/7-10/9)
 Prepare questions for your interview (sometime before you schedule your interview)
 optional: take your questions to the Tutoring Center to make sure they are grammatical and clear
(any time before your interview)
 Receive the email address of your interviewee (10/9)
 Email your interviewee to set up a time (on or after 10/9)
 Write a draft of the questions you will ask during the interview and bring them with
you to class on 10/13
 Conduct your interview (This MUST be video recorded, so make sure you have a plan
to record. (i.e. meeting your interviewee at the Tutoring Center, One-Button Studio, or
bringing your recording device to a quiet, campus location)
 Choose 1 minute of the recording (that contains interviewer-generated questions) to
transcribe (write down). This must be typed and should include the time period you
have transcribed. (i.e. transcription from the video at 1:10-2:10).
 Complete the Transcription Analysis Handout.
 Submit all materials:
 7-10 minute video recording (Box) 10/24 by midnight
 Typed transcript of 1 minute of your conversation (Box) 10/24 by midnight
 Transcription Analysis Handout (scanned or re-typed) (Box) 10/24 by midnight
