3. Conversation Starters – AI130 A
Horse breeding is the reproduction of horses.
From modern studies, DNA has found that Arabian
bloodlines are found as a percentage in every
modern breed of riding horse in the world. What
do you think the reasons are for this spread of
Arabian bloodlines around the world?

4. Conversation Starters – AI130 A
As we know, academic life requires a huge number of assignments
from students. Sometimes the assignments are difficult, so students
seek information in websites or books to help them with the
assignments. The problem that is faced by many students in the
university is plagiarism. By plagiarizing, students get involved with big
problems with the policy of the university. For example, when
students copy other words in his/her assignment without citation or
quotation, the professor considers this to be plagiarism. In this
situation, the professor has the right to fail the student in his subject
because they see that plagiarism is a kind of cheating. Do you agree
with this and why?
(Asil, Architectural engineering)
5. Stress and compound nouns
Sometimes, 2 words act as a single “idea”:
they can be separate...
White House
swimming pool
office building
or they can be together...
software (soft + ware)
homework (home + work)
blackboard (black + board)
6. How are they different?
a greenhouse (green + house) - place where
plants are grown
versus
a green house - a house that is painted green
7. It’s simple:
They are pronounced with different stress:
The words that act as a single “idea” are stressed
like this:
a GREENhouse
(spoken fast)
However, a house that is simply painted green is
stressed like this
a green house
(spoken with equal speed)
8. You try:
I visited the White House in DC last weekend.
The White House was huge!!
versus
Have you seen that new white house on the corner?
I wonder who is living in that white house.
9. Hmm…
How is “SWIMMING pool” different from “swimming pool?”
Can you think of any others?
10. Some pronunciation tricks
stress the last letter of abbreviations:
DNA, CIA, FBI
stress the root when a number ends with –ty:
FIFty, SIXty, SEVenty, etc. Note: -”t” sounds like
“d”
stress the –teen ending when talking about % or $$$:
I got this shirt for only fifTEEN dollars!
otherwise, this might sound like FIFty dollars
very common miscommunication!
11. Practice Activity
1. With a partner, take turns saying the words
on the handout.
2. Make sure to really stress the beginning of
the compound words and say them faster.
3. Stress the separate words more equally and
say them slower.
4. Have your partner point to what they hear
you say.
12. Listening, pg. 46
Part A – pairs
Listen to the lecture and number the photos in the order
you hear about them.
Listen a second time and fill in the slide details.
After Listening – discuss the critical thinking questions
13. PSU Student Interview Project
Big Idea: For this project, you will prepare
interview questions about academic life at
PSU, videotape a 7-10 minute interview with
a PSU student, and transcribe (write down) 1
minute of the interview.
14. Brainstorm
In groups of 2-4, brainstorm a list of questions you
would like to ask a current Penn State student
16. PSU Observation VoiceThread Comments = Due
Wednesday by Midnight
Choose TWO PSU Observation Presentations that you are
interested in watching. Answer the following questions in
a 1-2 minute audio or video comment via Voicethread:
1. What are some similarities and differences between the
class that you observed and the class that your classmate
described in his/her video?
2. Can you think of an explanation for any of those
similarities or differences?
3 points of extra credit offered for each (legitimate) extra
comment that you make (4 comment limit).
