3. What is the Birthday Book Club?
The Birthday Book Club offers a special way to recognize a child's birthday and at the same time help
acquire additional books for the school library.
4. What are the benefits of membership?
• Your child will be invited to a Birthday Book Club party during their
birthday month. (Members with June and July birthdays celebrate
their half birthdays in December and January.)
• Your child will select a library edition hardback book of their choice
from a variety of new books held on reserve for this purpose. (A
special birthday bookplate displaying your child's name is placed in
the book.)
5. What are the benefits of membership?
• Your child will be the first student to check out their birthday book.
• Your child’s photograph will be displayed in the library during their
birthday/half-birthday month.
• South Smiths Station Elementary students will enjoy your child’s
birthday book for years to come!
6. How do I join?
To become a member of the club,
• Click on Birthday Book Club on the SSSES Library webpage.
• Print the form and fill in section at the bottom. (Note: Forms are sent
home with every student at the beginning of the school year.)
• Donate $15.00 to help cover the cost of a new library book. Cash or checks
are accepted. (Checks should be made payable to South Smiths Station
Elementary School. Please include a phone number and specify "Birthday
Book Club" and your child’s name on the bottom of the check.)
• Return your payment and the completed form in an envelope labeled
Birthday Book Club to your child’s homeroom teacher or Mrs. Norton,
SSSES Librarian.

Friend of the Library!
10. What is Friends of the Library?
Friends of the Library is a group of library volunteers who support the
library program by helping with daily library tasks (i.e., processing
library materials, shelving books, straightening/dusting shelves,
assisting with check in/out procedures) and/or special library events
(i.e., Birthday Book Club parties, Book Fairs).
11. How do I become a Friend of the Library?
• Click on Friends of the Library on the SSSES Library webpage.
• Print the Friends of the Library form and fill it in. (Note: Forms are
sent home with every student at the beginning of the school year.)
• Return the completed form in an envelope labeled “Friends of the
Library” to your child’s teacher or to Mrs. Norton, the Librarian.

13. Be a South SSES Library Aide!
Library aides must be…
• 5th or 6th graders
• Beta Club members
• Well-behaved (No discipline referrals from school or bus)
• Available one day a week for 30-45 minutes
How to apply:
• Turn in a library aide application form.
• Turn in a teacher recommendation form.
15. Participate in the Book Swap Shop!
Trade gently-used books from home with other South SSES students
at the library’s Book Swap Shop.
16. The Book Challenge!
• Read a book.
• Take an AR quiz.
• If you score 85% or higher, mark a square on your BINGO card.
• When you BINGO, show your teacher to receive in-class
recognition/reward.
• When you “Blackout BINGO,” your teacher will turn your card into the
library where you will be entered into a raffle for a free $10.00 book!
• Start over.
