During the January webinar, Dr. Phil Landrigan, leading epidemiologist and pediatrician, and Director of the Program for Global Public Health and the Common Good at Boston College, and Julia Cohen, who holds a Masters of Public Health in Maternal & Child Health, and is Plastic Pollution Coalition's Co-Founder & Managing Director, discussed the latest findings from Dr. Landrigan’s new report Human Health and Ocean Pollution as well as how each of us can reduce exposure to plastic pollution and its toxic impacts. The webinar took place on January 27, 2021.

Planet Aid is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that collects and recycles used clothing and shoes and supports international development projects. It is registered with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) as a private voluntary organization (PVO).
In 2012 Planet Aid celebrated its 15th year of operation.
When we started back in 1997 we had just a few dozen or so drop-off boxes in the Boston area, collecting several thousand pounds of clothes a week. Today, our operations
reach across 22 states. In 2012 alone we collected 110 million pounds of clothing from 18,000 collection bins that we own and operate. Our growth is a testament to the hard work of our staff and the help received from our many supporters.
Every day, more businesses, schools and community groups choose to host Planet Aid bins, helping to make recycling more convenient for all and saving valuable resources.

Planet Aid is a nonprofit organization that collects and recycles used clothing and shoes. Our efforts annually save more than a 100 million pounds of textiles from being dumped in landfills across the United States. We began recycling used clothing in 1997 in the Boston area. Today our clothes collection boxes can be found across 21 states. Our work has been very successful and the clothes we deliver much in demand, but that is not all we do.

In 2010, Planet Aid collected 95 million pounds of used

This achievement is a testament to both the generosity of the thousands of businesses and community organizations that hosted one or more of the 13,000 collection bins we have distributed across the United States, as well as the many individuals who stopped by one of those bins to donate their items.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

3. ● America consumes about 38 trillion water bottles every
year, enough to circle the Earth 190 times.
● Each year, less than 10% of the plastic used is
recycled.
● 33 million tons of plastic goes to waste.
● $75 billion each year is spent globally on plastic
production; recycling would save money and prevent
unnecessary wastes.
4. Recycling Laws in the U.S.
-Everyone has a different system.
-The U.S. recycling rate is 34%
-11 states offer 5-10¢ refunds for recycled bottles.
-7 states have mandatory recycling laws.

5. Negative Effects of Plastic On Environments
● When plastic is not recycled, it piles up in
landfills, taking from 50 to 1,000 years to
decompose.
● This non-recycled plastic blows off landfills,
ending up in oceans, and harming marine life.
● 100 million tons of plastic debris pollutes
marine habitats and suffocates sea animals.
● Most plastic contains bisphenol A (BPA), a
carcinogen (cancer causing material), which
leeches off the plastic and into the oceans.
● These chemicals contaminate the groundwater
reservoirs, polluting the drinking water and
poisoning both humans and animals.

6. We care about our environment.
We share our knowledge and programs
with the community.
We dare you to get involved with our
program.
7. Our main goal at ReCare is the care for the world to make it a more clean and
healthier environment for everything living on it.
- We care to recycle and use the profits to give back to those in need.
- The donations will be used in each individual community.
- The recyclable materials in the U.S. waste stream would produce up to 7
billion dollars if recycled.
- If we increase the emphasis on recycling, we can create up to 1.5 million jobs
by 2030.
11. Action Plan
Our plan is to provide communities, especially schools, with proper access to
recycling bins and programs that will help. We can then take the profits from this
to put into other organizations that we support. We can also provide communities
with the tools to encourage recycling with volunteering, community activities, and
fundraisers. These activities can include school competitions and jewelry made
from different recyclable materials.
12. What is ReCare?
Nonprofit organization in schools and around communities
All volunteers
Helps out in more than just one way
Cleaning the environment and giving back to the community at the same time
Recycling refundable items (cans, bottles) generates money
That money is then donated to a charity in that community
13. “To inspire and educate people to take action everyday to improve and
beautify their community.”
Formed in 1953 by National Advisory Council.
Develops public-private-civic partnerships for financial support, sponsorships,
employee engagement, and all kinds of contributions.
14. A Three Step Process
Keeping America Beautiful is trying to spread the love of the environment by using
a 3 step factor.
Convenience: Making information about the environment convenient and creating
programs to assist in these problems easy and accessible, so others will not
hesitate to join in.
Communication: This plays a huge role; as a team, everyone has the same goal.
By talking and having strong communication, then it will be easier to accomplish
our goal.
Cause: Recycling is an issue everywhere. By taking action and inspiring others,
we can create a clean and healthy environment one step at a time.
15. Why this non profit organization?
Keeping America Beautiful envisions a country in which
every community is a clean, green, and beautiful place to
live. They believe this starts with people taking individual
responsibility and collective action. We believe in these
values as well. Along with that they are the nation's largest
community improvement program, which we can benefit
from by networking within and learning from their vast array
of programs.
