3. Grapevine Wash
Vision Statement
• Imagine a sustainable red rock desert community that…
• Thrives in and celebrates the color and beauty of the desert…
• Development and architecture subsist as contextual and relevant, belonging to the surrounding environment
and fabric. The regional ideologies of the past and the present remain as celebrated, important elements, but
perhaps most valuably exist in their potential to be transformed into the material of the future.
• Preserves and emphasizes the views for all to enjoy…
• Development patterns combined with architectural massing and elements preserve and
• emphasize views of distant snow and forest covered mountain ranges and the red and purple
• colored mesas.
• Gives back to the environment in which it belongs by reducing energy and water
• consumption, utilizing alternative forms of energy and improves water quality…
• Natural, sustainable and environmentally conscious, development and architecture counteract
• the conventional suburban sprawl by promoting the preservation of natural resources and the pristine desert
environment. All design strives to incorporate solutions to climate change,
• environmental degradation and foreign oil dependency by encouraging the use of local building materials,
energy efficiency, as well as solar and geothermal energy sources.
• Water reclamation from a micro-filtration sewer plant that recycles water back to type 1 quality. This high
quality reclaimed water will be used for agriculture, parks and locally produced greenhouse organics.
• Consists of walkable neighborhoods and centers that do not depend on the automobile for
• day-to-day living…
• Sidewalks, parks, trails and ‘calmed’ streets encourage daily interaction with neighbors and
• nature. Inviting and welcoming architectural features relate to human-scale and emphasize
• human comfort instead of the automobile. Friendly and attractive porches adorn the front of
• each residence. Garages and parking areas are relegated to the rear of buildings and rarely front the street.
• A community website and free wireless internet will be the glue that ties all of
Grapevine's components together. People will be educated about the community and its objectives and will
be able to tie there own blogs to the community site to help make more of an inter active online community.
There will be digital cameras throughout the community so residents who are out of town can make sure their
homes are safe.
6. Goals for the Community
Reduced or eliminate carbon-based fuel consumption
High yield, low natural-resource consumption
Energy efficiency
Low waste
Preventable medicine
Equitable business
Higher learning
8. Food
Reduce the methane gas that is being produced by
networking easy ways of recycling and disposing
of food.
Education will help us with this, in letting people
know the best ways of eating food, and conserving
it as well.
10. Energy
Manage energy consumption in homes. When we know where
our energy is being used, and we know at what rate we're using it,
we can work harder on preserving it.
Add apps for networking to control appliances away from
your home. If we ever forget to shut something off, we are still
using that energy to keep it on. Why not have an app or two that
will let us control our home away from home.
Share network strategies for energy consumption with
people in the community. We can keep in touch with members of
the community to make or provide a better way for them to
conserve energy better.
Ensure energy usage and energy production is safe. We are
constantly finding ways to make and use natural energy. We
are making it a goal to use the best energy possible without
negative side effects on the environment.
11. Agriculture
• In order for agriculture to work in a sustainable community the community members
must all participate in growing crops and or raising livestock.
• This might not work for all community members.
• The idea is to build a farm in or around the community with enough crops and livestock
to support all community members and more.
•The extra produce and livestock would be sold outside of the community.
• In a way every community member is a farmer. This doesn’t mean that everyone must
go and work on the farm, but everyone in the community will be paying for their food
with funds from their HOA fees.
•Each community member owns a certain amount of Shares in the farm. The amount of
Shares each household has will depend on how many members are in the household.
•The farm Share system will create more healthy eating and lifestyles.
•To keep crops growing all year round the use of green houses will be needed as well.
12. Agriculture (cont.)
Shares
Typically a share consists of a box of vegetables and fruit, but other
farm products may be included. Community members would purchase
a share or "membership“ and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of
seasonal produce each week throughout the year. This arrangement
creates several rewards for both the farmer and community members.
13. Agriculture (cont.)
Advantages for community members:
Eat ultra-fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits.
Get exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking.
Usually get to visit the farm at least once a season.
Find that kids typically favor food from "their" farm even veggies they've
never been known to eat.
Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows their food and learn
more about how food is grown.
Community members will also know exactly what it takes to grow crops as
well as what pesticides are used to keep bugs away.
14. Agriculture (cont.)
Water Conservation
Rain barrels and pervious pavement would greatly help in storing water
and preventing water from being wasted. All stored water will go into a
water system that will be used to water crops and small portions of
grass.
Tank-less hot water heaters are great for conserving water and energy.
Limiting the amount of grass permitted on each community members
property would be needed to preserve water in the community.
Recycling waste water to water grass and trees.
15. Agriculture (cont.)
Social Media Advantages
With the food Share system each community member will have access to
the farms food availability through an application on your phone or
computer.
The app will tell community members what is available and how much.
This app will also make it possible to communicate with the farmer exactly
what community members like and dislike, that way community members
aren’t getting produce that they don’t like to eat.
Community members would also have the option of picking their own
produce and have the chance to visit the farm whenever they like.
The main goal of the crop share system is to support the farm and make
more healthy eating for the community.
