Dr. Vincent C. Bond is a professor and chair of microbiology, biochemistry and immunology at Morehouse School of Medicine. He has over 25 years of experience studying HIV pathogenesis and has authored over 150 scientific publications and communications on the topic. His research has focused on how exosomes released from HIV-infected cells induce apoptosis in bystander CD4+ T cells, contributing to immune activation and HIV propagation. Based on this work, Dr. Bond formed a start-up company called Orunmila Pharma to develop a therapeutic antagonist targeting related cellular processes in cancer and other diseases.

The effects of circumcision on the penis microbiome
This study assessed changes in the penile microbiome of 12 Ugandan men before and after circumcision using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The researchers found:
1) Over 40 unique bacterial families were identified in the coronal sulcus, with Pseudomonadaceae being the most abundant both before and after circumcision.
2) Circumcision was associated with a significant decrease in putative anaerobic bacterial families like Clostridiales Family XI and Prevotellaceae. There was a corresponding increase in facultative anaerobic families.
3) At the genus level, many of the detected anaerobic bacteria have been associated with bacterial vaginosis, including Anaerococcus,

Researchers have discovered a novel maturation mechanism employed by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) that improves its ability to infect liver cells. HBV particles are released from infected cells in an "immature" form that cannot bind to liver cells. Over time, the particles undergo a slow maturation process where they switch to a "mature" form able to bind to liver cells. This allows the particles to circulate in the bloodstream until reaching the liver, where they can then infect cells. This explains how HBV can specifically target liver cells for infection even when few virus particles enter the body. The finding could help develop new drugs that inhibit the maturation process and prevent HBV from becoming infectious.

ABSTRACT- Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a major contributor to the global burden of the disease, opportunistic infections, and tumors follow. HIV also directly attacks the immune system and affects certain body’s system (like Central Nervous System, Respiratory and Cardiovascular Systems, Digestive System etc). HIV transmission is complex and depends on the number of behavioral and biological co-factors. The hallmark of HIV infection is the progressive depletion of CD4 helper T cells because of reduced production and increased destruction. Although the typical HIV infected patient shows a sustained CD4 cell increase, a remarkable number of subjects never achieve normal ranges of CD4. HIV infection is also characterized by a marked increase in immune activation, which includes both the adaptive and innate immune systems and abnormalities in coagulation. Extraordinary efforts in the fields of clinical, pharmacology, and biology care have contributed to progressively turn HIV infection from an unavoidably fatal condition into a chronic manageable disease, at least in the countries where HIV infected people have full access to the potent anti-retroviral (ARV) drug combinations that permit a marked and sustained control of viral replication. Although their pathogenesis is still under discussed, they are likely to originate from immune dysfunction associated with HIV infection and chronic inflammation. The last consideration regards the dis-homogenous pattern of HIV disease worldwide. These communications include: 110+ abstracts/magazine articles/media presentations, ten patent applications, eight granted patents, and 60+ publications, 31 of which are articles in peer- reviewed journals focused on aspects of HIV pathogenesis research. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. at the Pennsylvania State University in Viral Genetics, and subsequently, did a postdoctoral fellowship at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Cell Biology. He came to MSM in 1990 as Assistant Professor. Research Interests As one of the lead researchers on the HIV research team at MSM, he has developed evidence that exosomes significantly contribute to immune activation, bystander CD4 T cell depletion, and HIV propagation via bystander cell activation during HIV infection. The team has shown this to occur through release of exosomes from HIV-infected cells that induce apoptosis in bystander uninfected CD4+ T cells. In HIV infected, viremic patients, exosomes circulating in the plasma were found to be enriched for a host of pro-inflammatory cytokines which induce immune activation in naive and central memory CD4 and CD8 T cells, one of the hallmarks of of HIV infection, and well established as one of the strongest predictors of HIV disease progression. They have also shown the relevance of HIV exosomes to pathogenesis in a humanized mouse model, and are developing similar data in the macaque model. This patented work has uniquely positioned his group to decipher the triggering mechanisms underlying HIV disease. It has also led to potential new targets for AIDS therapy, as well as having uncovered a potential therapeutic antagonist against those cellular targets. The described antagonist has been shown to modulate a cellular protein important in multiple cellular processes, and deregulated in cancer, IBD, bacterial pathogenesis, and biofilm formation. Dr Bond’s lab has formed a start-up company (Orunmila Pharma, Inc) that is developing the therapeutic potential of the antagonist, initially targeting its cancer chemo- preventive attributes.
