Letter from the Church Secretary
Dear all,
How the months slip by and we are into summer holidays now.
I wonder how many of you go back to the same place year after
year?
We go back to Shanklin on the Isle of Wight, to the same Hotel, where I
can feed and watch the red squirrels.
The pace of my life slows right down as I just watch the antics of this
delightful native wild animal.
Rest and recharging of batteries is good for all and I know many of
you look forward to the Holiday From Home,
when you get a lovely 4 days of entertainment and companionship.
Have an enjoyable time.
Another treat while away is attending Mass in Quarr Abbey, a service
led by Monks. This ancient Abbey has had people worshipping there
for so many, many years but sadly we see the decline in numbers and
you can't help wondering how long they will be able to keep it
functioning.
O to see a resurgence in attendance at services in Abbeys,
Cathedrals, Churches and Chapels, wouldn't that be wonderful.
Let us see if we can help our church family grow. A challenge for us
all.
With Christian love to you all
Mavis

Catalyst appeal for a new editor
No one has responded to my June appeal for a new editor.
The job is by no means an onerous one. In fact, it can provide
immense satisfaction when you see your work in print.
I did say that, ideally, the hand over should take place during the
summer break. There is a 2 month break before the September
edition is due.
I am writing up help notes which should explain some of the
processes involved in producing Catalyst. You are welcome to
have a copy of these to help you decide on taking up the
editor's quill and mouse.
I look forward to hearing from you via the usual channels.
Please contact me through the usual channels.

The Journey
I thought I'd copy & share this story:-
Aman and his dog were walking along a road. The man was
enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he
was dead.
He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had
been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading
them.
After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side
of the road. It looked like fine marble... At the top of a long hill, it
was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.
When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the
arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the
gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the
gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.
When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are
we?'
'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.. 'Wow! Would you happen to
have some water?' the man asked.
Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought
right up. 'The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the
traveller asked.
'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'
The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road
and continued the way he had been going with his dog.
After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he
came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it
had never been closed. There was no fence.
As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a
tree and reading a book.
'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'
'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.'
'How about my friend here?' the traveller gestured to the dog.
'There should be a bowl by the pump.'
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-
fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

Do you try not to add those tiny

not use a dedicated fairtrade keyring for
them. We have 3 left, but are willinig to order
more to suit demand. Do come and have a look

The traveller filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then
he gave some to the dog.
When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man
who was standing by the tree..
'What do you call this place?' the traveller asked.
'This is Heaven,' he answered.
'Well, that's confusing,' the traveller said. 'The man down the road said
that was Heaven, too.'
'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope.
That's hell.'
'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?'
'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave
their best friends behind.

Christian Aid Walk 2016
-----
Bright and early on the morning
of Sunday 22 May, Barbara and I
set out as so often before to help
with the Christian Aid sponsored
walk around the City Churches.
This walk is traditionally held on
the Sunday which follows
immediately after the formal end
of Christian Aid Week, and it is a
fitting conclusion. The weather
may not always be kind but the
atmosphere more than makes up
for that (and it was fairly kind this year, anyway!).
The City streets tend to be fairly quiet on a Sunday morning (at least I
assume so – as you know, we are all usually elsewhere!) and we
threaded our way through them to St Mary le Bow, the nerve centre of
operations for the day. Our job was to be stationed at one of the
checkpoints and stamp the walkers’ cards as they came through. The
City churches themselves form the checkpoints, giving walkers a
chance to see inside, or to enjoy the various activities laid on at
various churches – and between us Barbara and I have covered
seven churches and two cathedrals over the years. But this year it was
a bit different – we were based at the City’s only synagogue. It is the
oldest in the country, and very interesting, though once the main
body of walkers began to stream through we didn’t have time to think
about that!
For many people it is very much a family walk, with young children and
even babes in arms (or pushchairs) making the trip, though there are
plenty of adult parties and single walkers too. Christian Aid do a great
deal to liven things up for the younger walkers, and we saw several
who had benefited from face-painting or balloon modelling before
they reached us. There are also more serious issues covered, with
suggested prayers in the walkers’ booklet, and points to pause and
pray, sometimes in gardens now maintained by the City which were
once churches, where the walls and other remains can still be seen.
As ever, it was a fun day, full of good fellowship, and I wonder if Hayes
Free Church might provide any more volunteers, or even walkers,
when next year’s walk comes along (it will be Sunday 21 May 2017, by
the way...).

Don’t Panic
-----------------
A Bishop of Carlisle was terminating an interview with a very difficult
woman of the diocese who was at Rose Castle once again to lodge
a complaint about something or other. They were in the hall, getting
round to the final handshake, when a Secretary went out slamming
the door.
The Bishop’s wife called downstairs: ‘Has that stupid woman finally
gone, dear?’
Quick as a flash, the Bishop replied, ‘O, yes, my love, she went ages
ago. I’m with Mrs. Robinson now.’

BARLEY BREAD
Twelve ounces of barley flour.
Eight ounces of wholemeal.
Eight ounces of flour.
One teaspoonful of salt.
One teaspoonful of castor sugar.
Half an ounce of yeast.
Three gills of tepid water.
Mix the flours and salt and place in a warm basin. Make a well in the
centre of the flour. Cream the yeast and sugar in a small warm basin,
pour in the tepid water, stir, and then pour into the centre of the flour.
Cover and let rise for three-quarters of an hour, then mix In, and
knead well on a floured board. Divide the dough, and put it into
greased tins, then leave until it rises to the top of the tins (it will take
about hall an hour). Bake in a hot oven from three-quarters of an hour
to one hour. When the bread is baked the loaf sounds hollow if
tapped underneath.

Courier Fraud
-------------------
I thought it important to share the following which I received by
email. I receive these emails reports etc as I belong to a
neighbourhood watch scheme.
Editor
From our Shortlands DWO PCSO Adam Charles.
07/06/16 - 08/06/16
Dear All,
Please be advised of a recent courier fraud offence that took place
on our Ward, as detailed below. It seems that the fraudsters are
getting more persistent and finding new ways to deceive victims.
What makes this offence even more upsetting was that for personal
reasons the victim was feeling very low at the time.
Thanks & Kind Regards
Adam
Victim received phone call from his bank stating that there was a
problem with his cards and a courier would be sent to collect them.
He thought it was a scam and put the phone down. A few minutes
later he received another phone call from a male saying that he
was the bank manager who repeated the information from the
previous call. The victim thought he was genuine and agreed to
hand over the cards and his pin numbers. The following day one of
the cards was returned and the victim was instructed to go to the
bank and withdraw £5,000 cash and if asked why to say it was for
home improvements. He then returned home as instructed and a
courier came and collected the money. The victim contacted his
son who believed it was suspicious and helped the victim carry out
checks. These revealed that £250 had been withdrawn and £550
spent on a further transaction. Several further transactions on
another card had been declined.
Suspect descriptions have been provided by the victim and it is
being investigated. One of them was an Asian male in his early 20s
the other a white female in her mid 50s. A third suspect (a male)
was spoken to on the phone but did not meet the informant.
If you recall anything that you think may be useful intelligence for the
Police, please call 101.

NOTE: - Some of the organisations meet once or twice per month.
This is indicated by 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th. The numbers relate to which
week day of the month, NOT the calendar date.
Mark 4: 39, “Peace, be still".
Be still my restless soul -
Tossed on the sea of life.
The wind is rising and today
There's struggle and there's strife.
Be still my restless soul -
Amid the tempest’s roar.
The skies are grey, the night is dark,
And we are far from shore.
Be still my restless soul -
As once on Galilee:
Our Lord arose, rebuked the wind,
And calmed the angry sea.
Be still my restless soul -
Your Risen Master saves.
Look deep into the eyes of God.
Christ walks upon the waves.
Be still my restless soul -
Death’s shadows flee away.
Step out into the sea of faith
Into eternal day.

  • 3. 1 Letter from the Church Secretary Dear all, How the months slip by and we are into summer holidays now. I wonder how many of you go back to the same place year after year? We go back to Shanklin on the Isle of Wight, to the same Hotel, where I can feed and watch the red squirrels. The pace of my life slows right down as I just watch the antics of this delightful native wild animal. Rest and recharging of batteries is good for all and I know many of you look forward to the Holiday From Home, when you get a lovely 4 days of entertainment and companionship. Have an enjoyable time. Another treat while away is attending Mass in Quarr Abbey, a service led by Monks. This ancient Abbey has had people worshipping there for so many, many years but sadly we see the decline in numbers and you can't help wondering how long they will be able to keep it functioning. O to see a resurgence in attendance at services in Abbeys, Cathedrals, Churches and Chapels, wouldn't that be wonderful. Let us see if we can help our church family grow. A challenge for us all. With Christian love to you all Mavis

There are some appetising snacks, along with the usual food and non-food lines. Please continue to support your stall. Richard & Barbara. Editor’s Notes Catalyst appeal for a new editor No one has responded to my June appeal for a new editor. The job is by no means an onerous one. In fact, it can provide immense satisfaction when you see your work in print. I did say that, ideally, the hand over should take place during the summer break. There is a 2 month break before the September edition is due. I am writing up help notes which should explain some of the processes involved in producing Catalyst. You are welcome to have a copy of these to help you decide on taking up the editor's quill and mouse. I look forward to hearing from you via the usual channels. Please contact me through the usual channels. Richard Brown PS. The clock is ticking. Tick Tock.
  • 9. 7 The Journey I thought I'd copy & share this story:- Aman and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble... At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?' 'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.. 'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked. Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up. 'The man gestured, and the gate began to open. 'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveller asked. 'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.' The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. 'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?' 'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.' 'How about my friend here?' the traveller gestured to the dog. 'There should be a bowl by the pump.' They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old- fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. Continued on page 12 ....

  • 14. 12 The traveller filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.. 'What do you call this place?' the traveller asked. 'This is Heaven,' he answered. 'Well, that's confusing,' the traveller said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.' 'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell.' 'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?' 'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind. ..... • 15. 13 Christian Aid Walk 2016 ----- Bright and early on the morning of Sunday 22 May, Barbara and I set out as so often before to help with the Christian Aid sponsored walk around the City Churches. This walk is traditionally held on the Sunday which follows immediately after the formal end of Christian Aid Week, and it is a fitting conclusion. The weather may not always be kind but the atmosphere more than makes up for that (and it was fairly kind this year, anyway!). The City streets tend to be fairly quiet on a Sunday morning (at least I assume so – as you know, we are all usually elsewhere!) and we threaded our way through them to St Mary le Bow, the nerve centre of operations for the day. Our job was to be stationed at one of the checkpoints and stamp the walkers’ cards as they came through. The City churches themselves form the checkpoints, giving walkers a chance to see inside, or to enjoy the various activities laid on at various churches – and between us Barbara and I have covered seven churches and two cathedrals over the years. But this year it was a bit different – we were based at the City’s only synagogue. It is the oldest in the country, and very interesting, though once the main body of walkers began to stream through we didn’t have time to think about that! For many people it is very much a family walk, with young children and even babes in arms (or pushchairs) making the trip, though there are plenty of adult parties and single walkers too. Christian Aid do a great deal to liven things up for the younger walkers, and we saw several who had benefited from face-painting or balloon modelling before they reached us. There are also more serious issues covered, with suggested prayers in the walkers’ booklet, and points to pause and pray, sometimes in gardens now maintained by the City which were once churches, where the walls and other remains can still be seen. As ever, it was a fun day, full of good fellowship, and I wonder if Hayes Free Church might provide any more volunteers, or even walkers, when next year’s walk comes along (it will be Sunday 21 May 2017, by the way...).

  • 17. 15 Don’t Panic ----------------- A Bishop of Carlisle was terminating an interview with a very difficult woman of the diocese who was at Rose Castle once again to lodge a complaint about something or other. They were in the hall, getting round to the final handshake, when a Secretary went out slamming the door. The Bishop’s wife called downstairs: ‘Has that stupid woman finally gone, dear?’ Quick as a flash, the Bishop replied, ‘O, yes, my love, she went ages ago. I’m with Mrs. Robinson now.’ From Bishop's Brew Compiled by Ronald Brown, Bishop of Birkenhead The way things once were The food theme continues this year with recipes from the First World War. Hopefully, a useful collection will develop throughout the year. The source of the recipes is the “Win-the-war” cookery book. Editor BARLEY BREAD Twelve ounces of barley flour. • 18. 16 Courier Fraud ------------------- I thought it important to share the following which I received by email. I receive these emails reports etc as I belong to a neighbourhood watch scheme. Editor From our Shortlands DWO PCSO Adam Charles. 07/06/16 - 08/06/16 Dear All, Please be advised of a recent courier fraud offence that took place on our Ward, as detailed below. It seems that the fraudsters are getting more persistent and finding new ways to deceive victims. What makes this offence even more upsetting was that for personal reasons the victim was feeling very low at the time. Thanks & Kind Regards Adam Victim received phone call from his bank stating that there was a problem with his cards and a courier would be sent to collect them. He thought it was a scam and put the phone down. A few minutes later he received another phone call from a male saying that he was the bank manager who repeated the information from the previous call. The victim thought he was genuine and agreed to hand over the cards and his pin numbers. The following day one of the cards was returned and the victim was instructed to go to the bank and withdraw £5,000 cash and if asked why to say it was for home improvements. He then returned home as instructed and a courier came and collected the money. The victim contacted his son who believed it was suspicious and helped the victim carry out checks. These revealed that £250 had been withdrawn and £550 spent on a further transaction. Several further transactions on another card had been declined. Suspect descriptions have been provided by the victim and it is being investigated. One of them was an Asian male in his early 20s the other a white female in her mid 50s. A third suspect (a male) was spoken to on the phone but did not meet the informant. If you recall anything that you think may be useful intelligence for the Police, please call 101.

  • 24. Mark 4: 39, “Peace, be still". Be still my restless soul - Tossed on the sea of life. The wind is rising and today There's struggle and there's strife. Be still my restless soul - Amid the tempest’s roar. The skies are grey, the night is dark, And we are far from shore. Be still my restless soul - As once on Galilee: Our Lord arose, rebuked the wind, And calmed the angry sea. Be still my restless soul - Your Risen Master saves. Look deep into the eyes of God. Christ walks upon the waves. Be still my restless soul - Death’s shadows flee away. Step out into the sea of faith Into eternal day. Final Thought
