The document describes the Protocol for Exchanging Serial Content (PESC), which provides guidance for packaging and exchanging serial content between organizations. It defines three conformance levels for manifest files, file structures within packages, and metadata and file naming consistency. Examples of simple Zip and BagIt packages are also provided, as well as an example manifest file following Conformance Level 0 requirements.
What does success look like when it comes to library discoverability? Index based discovery systems have seen a dramatic rate of adoption since introduction to the research ecosystem in 2009, with more than 9,000 libraries relying on a discovery system to provide users with a comprehensive index to their offerings. Some issues bar the way to providing this comprehensive view, but many challenges have been overcome through collaboration between libraries, content providers and discovery partners. The NISO ODI initiative began to examine these issues in 2011, and released a best practice in June 2014.
Speakers will highlight examples of successful collaboration, note continued areas of challenge, and provide insight on how the Open Discovery Initiative Conformance Checklists can be used as a mechanism to evaluate content provider or discovery provider conformance with the best practice.
The British Library was one of the first national libraries to create and offer linked data in 2011 as part of its wider open data strategy. Since that point the organisation has gained considerable experience of the issues involved in the development and maintenance of a sustained linked data service.

OA in the Library Collection: The Challenge of Identifying and Managing Open ...NASIG
Librarians, researchers, and the general public have largely embraced the concept of open access (OA). Yet, incorporating OA resources into existing discovery and tracking systems is often a complicated process. Open access material can be delivered through a variety of publishing or archival mechanisms, creating certain challenges, particularly for those managing e-resources. Although an increasing proportion of research output is becoming open access each year, organization and discovery of these resources remains imperfect.
The debate between the relative merits of Green and Gold OA is regularly discussed in academic circles but less attention is devoted towards Hybrid OA and the challenges inherent in this model. Most major publishers offer open access through one or more of these models, but open access metadata standards seem to be lacking among these content providers. The presenters will discuss some of these challenges identified in the literature and through other mechanisms, including data gathered by NISO and an original survey. By identifying these issues, the scholarly communication community can work together to improve discovery for end users.

The Open Discovery Initiative (ODI) was formed in 2011 to address issues with the opaque agreements between content providers and discovery service providers. The ODI aims to define standards for assessing content provider participation, streamlining processes for working with discovery vendors, and determining usage statistics collection. An ODI Standing Committee was formed in 2014 to promote educational opportunities on its recommended practices, provide support during adoption, and serve as a forum for ongoing discussion among stakeholders. The Standing Committee roster includes representatives from libraries, publishers, and service providers. Key areas of focus for the committee are education, technology, and ensuring conformance through published checklists and statements.
Sitations are the way that researchers communicate how
their work builds on and relates to the work of others and
they can be used to trace how a discovery spreads and is
used by researchers in different disciplines and countries.
Creating a truly comprehensive map of scholarship,
however, relies on having a curated machine-readable
database of citation information, where the provenance of
every citation is clear and reusable. The Initiative for Open
Citations (I4OC), a campaign launched on 6 April 2017,
sought to make publisher members of Crossref aware that
they could open up the citation metadata they already give
to Crossref simply by asking them. With the support of
major publishers and the endorsement of funders and other
organisations, more than 50% of citation data in Crossref
is now freely available, up from less than 1% before the
campaign. This provides the foundation of a well-structured,
open database of literally millions of datapoints that anyone
can query, mine, consume and explore. The presenter will
discuss the aims of the campaign, the new innovative
services that are already using the data, what more still
needs to be done and how you can support the initiative.

Ethan Pullman and Denise Novak presented on how librarians can stay informed about text mining to better support their constituents. Kristen Garlock discussed JSTOR's Data for Research service which allows researchers to generate datasets for text mining. Patricia Cleary provided an overview of Springer's text and data mining policy which allows researchers to text mine subscribed content for non-commercial research.

Capturing and Analyzing Publication, Citation and Usage Data for Contextual C...NASIG
Libraries have long sought to demonstrate the value of their collections through a variety of usage statistics. Traditionally, a strong emphasis is placed on high usage statistics when evaluating journals in collection development discussions. However, as budget pressures persist, administrators are increasingly concerned with looking beyond traditional usage metrics to determine the real impact of library services and collections. By examining journal usage in the context of scholarly communication, we hope to gain a more holistic understanding of the use and impact of our library’s resources. In this session, we begin by outlining our methodology for gathering comprehensive publication and citation data for authors affiliated with Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, utilizing Web of Science as our primary data source and leveraging a custom Python script to manage the data. Using this data we discuss various potential metrics that could be employed to measure and evaluate journals in institutional and field-specific contexts, including but not limited to: number of publications and references per journal, co-citation networks, percentage of references per journal, and increases or decreases of references over time per title. We then consider the development of normalized benchmarks and criteria for creating field-specific core journal lists. We also discuss a process for establishing usage thresholds to evaluate existing journal subscriptions and to highlight potential gaps in the collection. Finally, we apply and compare these metrics to traditional collection development tools like COUNTER usage reports, cost-per-use analysis, Inter-Library Loan statistics and turnaway reports, to determine what correlations or discrepancies might exist. We finish by highlighting some use-cases which demonstrate the value of considering publication and citation metrics, and provide suggestions for incorporating these metrics into library collection development practices.

The main challenges facing universities and authors in moving to OA for journal articles are achieving compliance, managing costs, and realising the benefits of OA. This session will outline Jisc services that help, from submission of an article, through acceptance, to publication and use. It will show how these services build on existing infrastructure, where possible, to provide a solution that, while tailored to UK circumstances, is more widely applicable.

Collection Directions: Some Reflections on Libraries and Stewardship of the ...OCLC
This document discusses the changing landscape of academic libraries and their role in stewardship of the scholarly record. It notes that collections are becoming more fragmented as they shift from local to group-scale management, and libraries are redirecting resources from commodity collections to distinctive services. Academic library consortia will need to collaborate more deeply on collection management and custodial responsibilities to adequately support the evolving scholarly record across its various formats. Questions are raised about whether existing consortia represent the right stakeholders and scale of cooperation needed for effective collaborative stewardship arrangements going forward.

This document discusses the development of reusable and portable educational content in New Zealand schools. It outlines efforts to break dependencies between content and learning management systems by developing content that can be easily shared and reused across different platforms. A conceptual model was created based on workflow analysis. Wikis were identified as a way to enable authoring, sharing and ensuring interoperability of content. Three work streams were proposed to cover these areas as well as interoperability with multiple learning environments. Challenges around policies, politics and perceptions of open educational resources were also discussed.

The document summarizes a project at the London School of Economics (LSE) Library to add metadata records for 42 current and 8 archived research blogs, as well as 6 partner blogs, to the LSE Research Online repository. Over 11,000 blog posts were added. The project helped the library meet goals around preserving the complete intellectual output of the school and facilitating knowledge exchange and impact. Automating some metadata creation processes reduced the time spent on the work. Analysis found blog downloads were a growing part of repository usage. The library is considering expanding metadata for live blogs and adding DOIs to blog content to improve discovery and assess impact.
Mediawiki for oer and learning analytics - understanding learning resources a...Simon Knight
MediaWiki can be used to create and share Open Educational Resources (OER) by allowing verbatim reuse, adaptation, remixing, and redistribution of content. Learning analytics can track how users interact with OER resources on MediaWiki, collecting data on usage, favorites, tags, and linked content to better understand learners. The ORBIT MediaWiki site is an example that links educational tools and pedagogy to lesson resources using templates. Challenges include maintaining versions with transclusion and implementing wiki-wide reference management.

In 2014, the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information and the University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) partnered in the development of the TALint (Toronto Academic Libraries Internship) program. Focused on workplace-integrated-learning (W-I-L), the TALint program provides enhanced educational experiences for Masters of Information students by combining periods of in-class study with actual workplace experiences. The two-year program is intended to enhance the quality of student learning by providing interns with specialized knowledge and practical skills, professional development and mentorship opportunities. It is often the case that the workplace is ahead of academic programs. This is particularly true in technical services and the field of electronic resource management, where the requisite knowledge and practical skills required to perform these roles has traditionally been under-represented within library and information studies curricula. The TALint program has provided UTL with the unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the expertise developed through information studies programs and the specific knowledge and skills required to take on roles as electronic resource librarians. With this year’s TALint cohort in UTL’s Metadata Technologies Team, we are using NASIG’s Core Competencies for Electronic Resources Librarians as a framework for training our two TALint interns. In this session, presenters will discuss the development of a comprehensive student training plan in electronic resource management, the ongoing assessment of learning outcomes, student perceptions of competency-based training, and the benefits of using the Core Competencies that have been felt beyond the internship program. We will share how this training plan can better equip Masters of Information students for careers in electronic resource management by producing graduates who are qualified, technologically skilled and workplace-ready.

Healing is the body’s response to injury in an attempt to restore normal structure and functions.
Healing can occur in two ways: Regeneration and Repair
There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.
Complications of wound healing like infection, hyperpigmentation of scar, contractures, and keloid formation.

Spring 2015 Student Engagement Insights – surveyed 3000 students and 700 faculty and you can find more about the study and results on our site – however, I wanted to highlight these 3 things which capture opportunity as we think about the real challenges and reasons for our efforts in Discovery:
90% of college students say the library and its resources provide value - however ¾ of them wish they took better advantage of it – and 70% don’t even ask librarians for help

Tim spoke at a recent CENGAGE company event and described how was flattered when his daughter commented on something covered in Time Out’s blog – as he thought she was actually going to the Time Out website and reading the blog. However, the essence of what she said is what I think we all see in students today – Oh No Dad, good stuff finds me – I don’t follow your blog.
