Why? • Title Lists have many uses • Vary in format & data included • NISO initiative known as “KBART” – Knowledge Base and Related Tools – published specifications for reporting title lists • Gale has made KBART lists availble (Phase 1 ) • Phase 2 – expands to include additional content types and will incorporate Gale Direct Linking. - Gale has been involved in working with Discovery Services partners since the beginning of the services – we don’t have a library discovery service but work with those who do. My presentation reflects on what we at Gale have learned along the way and more importantly – the evolution of our thinking at Gale about Discovery
- http://blog.cengage.com/college-students-and-instructors-on-library-use-infographic/ Spring 2015 Student Engagement Insights – surveyed 3000 students and 700 faculty and you can find more about the study and results on our site – however, I wanted to highlight these 3 things which capture opportunity as we think about the real challenges and reasons for our efforts in Discovery: 90% of college students say the library and its resources provide value - however ¾ of them wish they took better advantage of it – and 70% don’t even ask librarians for help asked 700 instructors and 3000 students to provide their perspectives on library use and research habits.” This infographic “compares their responses and provides insight into the ways that instructors and students across the United States make use of their campus libraries.”
- Then you couple that with the very nature of how information flows with students….Tim Arthur is the Global CEO of Time Out in charge of a company that now reaches more than 39 million people a month that grew out of a subscription publication with a circulation of 46,000. Tim spoke at a recent CENGAGE company event and described how was flattered when his daughter commented on something covered in Time Out’s blog – as he thought she was actually going to the Time Out website and reading the blog. However, the essence of what she said is what I think we all see in students today – Oh No Dad, good stuff finds me – I don’t follow your blog.
- Focused around Classroom, Instructors, and Libraries – in the Classroom, Open Web and Library
- In the classroom – Gale is a part of Cengage Learning who markets MindTap – a digital learning platform. As we can can introduce students to library resources right from the text and their assignments, Discovery of library resources increases
- Assignments can bring to life courses such as this – US History – where students used Gale’s primary sources to create a course Pinterest board
- And what that means…Usage more than doubled over highest prior month for a primary source focused database 18th Century Collections Online – and in 87th percentile vs other comparable size institution, within 6 weeks of adoption a US History in Context database was in 100th percentile for usage compared to comparable size institutions
- To further integrate use of library tools into the classroom, Gale now offers Google sign on selected Gale products and we’re seeing tremendous uptake and use of this as Google Education takes root. This make it easy to use and share articles of interest with Google’s Classroom tools such as Drive and Google Hangouts. - Google Scholar has begun indexing scholarly full text articles found in Gale Academic OneFile - expect up to 2.2M to be indexed by year end Find Gale articles via Google and Google Scholar Subscribers who can be authenticated get to the article in their library’s Gale database. Others get a preview of the article and instructions on how to logon. Expect to drive greater usage of library resources
- The role of compliance: open transparent communication and guidance on what and how we should exchange information with Discovery - and making that statement publically available
