This document summarizes research evaluating the use of open badges in an open learning environment. The researchers studied how open badges were used in an open online course to recognize learner achievements and encourage participation. They analyzed data on when and to whom badges were awarded, and interviewed learners about their experiences receiving badges. The results showed that badges motivated learners and helped them track their own progress. However, some learners were unclear on how badges were earned or unaware they had received badges. The researchers concluded that open badges have potential to recognize learning in open online environments but interface and awareness issues need further study.
