Identifying intersections among a set of d-dimensional rectangular regions (d-rectangles) is a common problem in many simulation and modeling applications. Since algorithms for computing intersections over a large number of regions can be computationally demanding, an obvious solution is to take advantage of the multiprocessing capabilities of modern multicore processors. Unfortunately, many solutions employed for the Data Distribution Management service of the High Level Architecture are either inefficient, or can only partially be parallelized. In this paper we propose the Interval Tree Matching (ITM) algorithm for computing intersections among d-rectangles. ITM is based on a simple Interval Tree data structure, and exhibits an embarrassingly parallel structure. We implement the ITM algorithm, and compare its sequential performance with two widely used solutions (brute force and sort-based matching). We also analyze the scalability of ITM on shared-memory multicore processors. The results show that the sequential implementation of ITM is competitive with sort-based matching; moreover, the parallel implementation provides good speedup on multicore processors.
This Virtual User Group session, held on 2013-08-28, will give you advice and hints to analyze difficult MIP problems and improve CPLEX performance solving them.

The Comprehensive Product Platform Planning (CP3) framework presents a flexible mathematical model of the platform planning process, which allows (i) the formation of sub-families of products, and (ii) the simultaneous identification and quantification of plat- form/scaling design variables. The CP3 model is founded on a generalized commonality matrix that represents the product platform plan, and yields a mixed binary-integer non- linear programming problem. In this paper, we develop a methodology to reduce the high dimensional binary integer problem to a more tractable integer problem, where the com- monality matrix is represented by a set of integer variables. Subsequently, we determine the feasible set of values for the integer variables in the case of families with 3 − 7 kinds of products. The cardinality of the feasible set is found to be orders of magnitude smaller than the total number of unique combinations of the commonality variables. In addition, we also present the development of a generalized approach to Mixed-Discrete Non-Linear Optimization (MDNLO) that can be implemented through standard non-gradient based op- timization algorithms. This MDNLO technique is expected to provide a robust and compu- tationally inexpensive optimization framework for the reduced CP3 model. The generalized approach to MDNLO uses continuous optimization as the primary search strategy, how- ever, evaluates the system model only at the feasible locations in the discrete variable space.
Development of a family of products that satisfies different sectors of the market introduces significant challenges to today’s manufacturing industries – from development time to aftermarket services. A product family with a common platform paradigm offers a powerful solution to these daunting challenges. The Comprehensive Product Platform Planning (CP3) framework formulates a flexible product family model that (i) seeks to eliminate traditional boundaries between modular and scalable families, (ii) allows the formation of sub-families of products, and (iii) yield the optimal depth and number of platforms. In this paper, the CP3 framework introduces a solution strategy that obviates common assumptions; namely (i) the identification of platform/non-platform design variables and the determination of variable values are separate processes, and (ii) the cost reduction of creating product platforms is independent of the total number of each product manufactured. A new Cost Decay Function (CDF) is developed to approximate the reduction in cost with increasing commonalities among products, for a specified capacity of production. The Mixed Integer Non-Liner Programming (MINLP) problem, presented by the CP3 model, is solved using a novel Platform Segregating Mapping Function (PSMF). The proposed CP3 framework is implemented on a family of universal electric motors.
CP Optimizer is a generic system, largely based on CP, to model and solve real-world combinatorial optimization problems with a particular focus on planning and scheduling applications. It provides an algebraic language with simple mathematical concepts (such as intervals, sequences or functions) to capture the temporal dimension of planning and scheduling problems in a combinatorial optimization framework. CP Optimizer implements a model-and-run paradigm that vastly reduces the burden on the user to understand CP or scheduling algorithms: modeling is by far the most important. The automatic search integrates a large panel of techniques from Artificial Intelligence (constraint programming, temporal reasoning, learning, ...) and Operations Research (mathematical programming, graph algorithms, local search, ...) into an exact algorithm that provides good performance out of the box and is continuously improving. This tutorial gives an overview of CP Optimizer for planning and scheduling: typical applications, modeling concepts with examples, ingredients of the automatic search, tools and performance.
Towards billion bit optimization via parallel estimation of distribution algo...kknsastry
This paper presents a highly efficient, fully parallelized implementation of the compact genetic algorithm to solve very large scale problems with millions to billions of variables. The paper presents principled results demonstrating the scalable solution of a difficult test function on instances over a billion variables using a parallel implementation of compact genetic algorithm (cGA). The problem addressed is a noisy, blind problem over a vector of binary decision variables. Noise is added equaling up to a tenth of the deterministic objective function variance of the problem, thereby making it difficult for simple hillclimbers to find the optimal solution. The compact GA, on the other hand, is able to find the optimum in the presence of noise quickly, reliably, and accurately, and the solution scalability follows known convergence theories. These results on noisy problem together with other results on problems involving varying modularity, hierarchy, and overlap foreshadow routine solution of billion-variable problems across the landscape of search problems.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?
