5. Background of the Fiji Agriculture Census Project
1950 1960 1968 1978 1991 2009
• Agriculture plays an important role in the economy of the country in
terms of food security, employment creation, increasing foreign
exchange earning and contribution to the annual GDP.
• Due to the demanding expansion of conventional production-oriented
data from public, private and international sector, Government of Fiji
through the Ministry of Agriculture requested Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO) to assist in the conduct of 2009 census.
6. Methodology
Earlier Census and National Agriculture Survey used Area
Sampling Frame (ASF) for estimation at Provincial at
National Level.
A comprehensive List Sampling Frame (LSF) with complete
enumeration was expected to provide better estimates with
fewer ASF segments.
Target Segment size 1km sq. (100Ha) for all strata.
Smaller Districts with few segments – complete enumeration
of all the households – SIS (Small Islands Strategy)
