Background  The last agricultural census conducted in Barbados was in the year 1989  Preliminary work was done to conduct an agricultural census in the 2000 round  A draft questionnaire was designed along with the procurement of census materials  Resource constraints resulted in the curtailing of this effort. 3

National Agricultural Survey  In 2005 Planning resumed for a Census of Agriculture to be conducted.  The lack of adequate resources again threatened to curtail this effort for a second time.  The Ministry of Agriculture approached the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for assistance. 4

National Agricultural Survey Cont’d  An analysis of the available resources lead to the recommendation for a National Agriculture Survey.  A listing of agricultural holdings by enumeration district was undertaken.  The National Agricultural Survey was administered in two phases in November- December, 2006 and covered approximately 2000 holdings.  February-March, 2007. Approximately 700 holdings were covered in this phase.  The information was collected using PAPI method 5

Food Crop Survey  The information collected from the National Agricultural Survey was used to generate a sample frame for the current Food Crop Production Survey.  Data collected from this survey is used to estimate monthly agricultural crop production.  Three field investigators are used to collect planting and harvesting information from a panel of 650 crop farmers. 8

Livestock  Chick Sale information is sent from all hatcheries to the Barbados Agricultural Society which is then forwarded to the Ministry of Agriculture  Animal Slaughter Figures are reported from abattoirs on the island  Fish landing information is collected by the fisheries department from all landing sites around the island 9

Including Agricultural Questions In Housing and Population Census  In 2010 a number of questions were included in the 2010 housing and population census.  These questions were to provide a frame for future targeted surveys.  This approach yielded some difficulties in the enumeration process. 10

Future Plans  Include agricultural section into 2020 housing and population census.  Use proposed frame questions published in the WCA 2020 as a guide  Submit proposal to Finance Ministry for funding an agricultural census in the 2020 round  Identify other sources of funding and technical assistance to help supplement local budget. 12
