In an effort to increase graduate student retention and graduation rates, the University of North Texas is in the process of developing academic support services for graduate students outside the classroom. Based on data gathered as part of a larger needs-assessment, new programs include research and statistical support, expanded tutoring options, and individual academic coaching. Participants in this session will learn about the process of developing, implementing, and marketing these programs along with information on future plans for the programs including expansion, refining, and formal assessment.

Open Academic Analytics Initiative - Campus Technology Innovator Award Presen...Joshua
The Open Academic Analytics Initiative (OAAI) has developed an open-source academic early alert system using Sakai and Pentaho, an open-source Business Intelligence tool, designed to identify students who are at risk to not complete their courses? successfully and then deploy an intervention intended to help the student succeed. The system includes a predictive model which has been released under an open-source license using a standard markup Language to facilitate use and enhancement by others. The system has been deployed to over 2200 students across four different institutions. Based on these pilots, research on critical scaling factors such as the ?portability? of such predictive models and success of intervention strategies has been conducted. Our presentation will update the community on this initiative and our latest research findings as well as discuss future work.

CCCOER OER Degree Research with Achieving the Dream, SRI Education, and rpk G...Una Daly
An OER-based degree, sometimes referred to as a Zero-Textbook-Cost degree, is a pathway to a degree or credential with no textbook costs. Faculty have redesigned the courses in the pathway to use open educational resources (OER) instead of traditional commercial textbooks and early research shows students are succeeding as well or better than peers in traditional courses while saving up to 25% on the cost of attendance. Additional research has shown that a college may be able to increase tuition revenue through increased student persistence and success in these pathways.
With the largest OER degree grant initiative of its kind launched last year at 38 colleges in 13 U.S. states, Achieving the Dream, has undertaken research to look at the academic and financial impact to students and their institutions. Grant partners SRI, along with partner rpk GROUP, is conducting research and evaluation to identify impact and cost as well as the facilitators and barriers to successful implementation of this model. Join us to hear from the researchers about methodology, benefits and challenges for colleges, and findings from the first semester of the grant.
When: Wed, April 12 1st, 10amPST/1pmEST
Featured Speakers:
Jessica Mislevy, PhD is a senior researcher with SRI Education’s Center for Technology in Learning and one of the key researchers for the ATD OER Degree Initiative.

Learning analytics and the learning and teaching journey | Prof Deborah West ...Blackboard APAC
Much work has been done across the sector in relation to learning analytics including the implementation of Analytics for Learn as well as Pyramid and SQL reporting. This work has provided us with data around learning and teaching interactions at various levels and in different contexts. From this data reports are generated that can be used in a variety of ways including to address issues of retention, assist with student success, support teaching practice and facilitate curriculum improvement . However, many academics are not quite sure of what is available, what it can be used for or the timing around usage. This can present a range of challenges including the under-utilisation of reports that are available, inappropriate use of reports or a sense that reports are not very useful. One way that we are tackling these challenges at Charles Darwin University it to conceptualise the reports within the framework of the learning and teaching journey. This includes a variety of perspectives from the student journey to the curriculum lifecycle. This also provides the opportunity to consider the relevance of reports to different learning and teaching contexts and approaches. This session will present our framework highlighting recommended time frames and applications for various reports as well as drawing attention to both the benefits and limitations of the approach.
