Editor's Notes

  1. Our mission is to help build healthy and vibrant communities across Ontario through our investments in community-based initiatives by not-for-profit organizations. My very first day on the job here I was asked by a Board member, “What do we mean by ‘healthy and vibrant communities’, and how will we know when we see it?” That was in the Spring of 2006…
  2. 2007-08 – OTF began looking for ways to more clearly define, measure and report on what we mean by “healthy and vibrant communities. 2009-10 – OTF undertook research, stakeholder convening and staff consultations to review community indicators relevant to measuring OTF’s impact more effectively
  3. In 2012 we were audited by the Auditor General – received a favorable audit, however there were areas of improvement noted, among them developing additional assessment criteria to ensure that the initiatives funded are those that will have the greatest community impact.
  4. So we asked ourselves, as Canada’s largest granting foundation, we award around $110M to about 1,300 organizations every year, over the next decade, we’ll invest $1 billion in Ontario’s public benefit sector. So by 2025, how will we know the health and vibrancy of Ontario communities have improved as the result of the $1B investment? With this ‘billion dollar question’ in mind, we looked for ways to better know the impact of our investments
  5. CIW emerged as a valid and reliable model for measuring what makes communities “healthy” and “vibrant”
  6. 2012-13 OTF commissions and partners with CIW on the first provincial report CFC (with OTF involvement) funds first CIW model at the municipal level – www.guelphwellbeing.ca OTF funds first sector-based use of CIW – AOHC OTF and CFC partner to advance a shared measurement approach based on the CIW framework – CKX
  7. Results received
  8. Looking more deeply at some trends, which domains are going up or down, focusing on areas that are aligned with OTF’s mission, we hope that they can help us find the right fit between CIW and what the Foundation is in the best position to achieve
  9. … identify our investment priorities in each of the four sectors that we fund – Arts and Culture, Human and Social Services, Sports and Recreation, and the Environment – and in the Not-for-Profit and Voluntary sector as a whole in Ontario
  10. We also hope to use the CIW to help us measure our long-term success in certain areas tied to our mission CIW offers valid and reliable measures for what Canadians have identified what defines community wellbeing. Using the CIW model can advance our Foundation’s goals to achieve impact and demonstrate value for money in our efforts to build healthy and vibrant communities.
