The Great River Race
The Great River Race takes place every year on the river Thames. One
Saturday in September, crowds of people line the Thames through London, to
watch one of the city's most unusual events. The Great River Race is a boat
race. It starts at Richmond, in the western part of London. Participants have to
row their boats 22 miles, as far as the London docks, in the east.
The race is a new event in the London calendar. The first race took place
in 1988. The idea was born in 1987, when members of the historic "Company
of Watermen and Lightermen" rowed a copy of a 16th century ship from
Hampton court to the Tower of London. Watermen are river workers who carry
passengers across and along the city centre rivers and Lightermen are workers
who transfer goods between ships and docks. In 1988, they challenged other
"traditional boats" to a race.
Over the years, the race has become a very colourful event. There are
different wonderful boats. Most are ordinary rowing boats but there are also

Viking longships, and other unusual boats. In 1995 the race was won by a
Chinese dragon boat, in a record time of 2 hours, 6 minutes and 31 seconds!
As the years go by, more and more boats take part in the race. There were
72 boats in 1988. There were more than 300 boats in 2014. Last year, there
were teams from all over the U.K, and also from America, Canada, and five
European countries.
To make the finish of the race more exciting, a "handicap" system works.
At the start of the race, the slowest boats set off first, the fastest ones last. The
Great River Race is a great fun day for both sportsmen and spectators.
