This document contains an English language exam for 5th grade students in Russia. It includes sections on listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar and writing. Festivals.
The Songkran Water Festival is a popular event in Thailand. It is a national
holiday. Students do not study and people do not go to work for a week. In the
past the Songkran was a time to visit relatives to pay respects to elders, and to
clean away the old year and bring in a fresh one. Many Thais washed away the
old year by cleaning their homes. Nowadays this festival is known for a water
fight. People take whatever they can get their hands on– buckets, water
balloons, water guns, a hose– and pour water on each other.
The Inti Raymi or the Festival of the Sun is the biggest traditional festival in
the Andes of Peru. Peru is in the Southern hemisphere and June 24th is the
shortest day and the longest night. Thousands of actors perform on an outdoor

stage near a fortress. The actors give thanks to the sun god. At sunset
everybody must leave the place of the performance and return to Cusco. There
are a lot of Peruvian musicians in the streets of the city. The city is very
colourful and people have a lot of fun.
La Tomatina is a food fight festival. It is on the last Wednesday of August each
year in the town of Bunol near Valencia in Spain. Thousands of people make
their way from all corners of the world to fight in this 'World's Biggest Food
Fight' where people throw a lot of tomatoes in the streets. The signal for the
beginning of the fight is the firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins.
There are some rules for fighters. For example, people must not tear T-shirts or
people must stop when they hear the second banger. The fight lasts for an hour,
after which all the streets are covered with tomato paste.
People fight with vegetables.
