China celebrates the Moon Harvest Festival in September. The Moon Festival
celebration is on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar
calendar. The Moon Festival is full of legendary stories. One legend says that
Chang Er, the Chinese goddess of moon, flew to the moon, where she has lived
ever since. You might see her dancing on the moon during the Moon Festival.
As a tradition, Chinese families give each other round cakes called moon
cakes. The moon cake is the food for the Moon Festival. People also carry
brightly lit lanterns. Sometimes people write riddles on lanterns and give them
to others who try to guess the answers.
India celebrates Pongal, a harvest festival, between January 13 and January 16.
Pongal is a sweet rice dish. On the first day, people offer Pongal to the rain

gods, on the second day Pongal is offered to the sun god and on the third day
people wash bulls and decorate their horns. People thank their animals for their
hard work in the fields. Indians wear new clothes, throw out old household
items, and buy new ones. Kannum pongal is the final day of the harvest
festival. This is the time when the entire family from different parts of the
country meet up and have a great time together. They visit zoos, beaches and
watch movies.
The Thanksgiving Day in Brazil is on the fourth Thursday of November. The
Ambassador of Brazil liked the idea of Thanksgiving in the USA and
introduced the holiday in Brazil. In every home, people prepare a special meal
and share it among friends and families. 'Peru' ('turkey' in Portuguese) is the
traditional main course of the Thanksgiving feast in Brazil. Other dishes are
mashed potatoes and pumpkin pies. The Brazilian Thanksgiving follows the
American tradition of Thanksgiving but is unique for its colourful
Thanksgiving carnivals.
People celebrate their harvest festival in winter.
