Sound is produced by vibration and needs a medium to travel through. When an object vibrates, it causes disturbances in the surrounding medium that propagate as a mechanical wave. In air, these disturbances consist of alternating regions of high and low pressure called compressions and rarefactions. Sound waves are longitudinal waves that cause particles in the medium to vibrate back and forth parallel to the direction of propagation. The human ear detects sound waves and converts them into electrical signals that are sent to the brain for interpretation.
