Gujarat HC rejects Rahul Gandhi’s plea for
stay on conviction in defamation case

In a setback for Congress
leader Rahul Gandhi in
his hope to get back the
Parliament membership,
the Gujarat High Court
on Friday rejected his
plea seeking a stay on his
conviction in a criminal
defamation case over his
Modi surname remark.
Justice HM Prachchhak
observed that Gandhi
tried to seek the stay “on
absolutely non-existent
ground”. The judge said
that issue of disqualifica-
tion is not only limited to
MPs and MLAs. Rahul
Gandhi is facing nearly

Prime Minister Narendra
Modi is visiting Bikaner today. While Modi
will inaugurate the Greenfield Expressway
between Amritsar and Jamnagar, built at a
cost of `20,000 crore, he will also inaugu-
rate various other developmental projects
worth crore of rupees. Notably, this will be
PM Modi’s seventh visit to the desert State
in the past nine months, which includes his
visits to Abu Road in September 2022 and
Banswara in November 2022, a hint to how
serious the saffron party is regarding its
future in Rajasthan.
On the flip side, with PM’s visit, the BJP
is eyeing to ‘smitten’voters of no less than
30 Assembly and 4 Lok Sabha constituen-
cies. So far, top BJP leaders including
Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President
JP Nadda and Defence Minister Rajnath
Singh have visited Udaipur, Bharatpur and
Jodhpur respectively.
In such a short span of 3 months, Modi
has again chosen to visit Rajasthan with an
‘indirect’ idea of mobilising BJP workers
for upcoming 2023 Assembly polls in Ra-
jasthan. On the same lines, another master-
mind strategist Union Home MinisterAmit
Shah has also visited Bharatpur and
Udaipur and tried to change the Congress
‘roadmap’in these areas. There is no doubt
about it that a recent Gehlot - Pilot patch up
(at least on the face value), massive Gehlot
freebie campaign and a likely Muslim vote
polarisation poses a serious challenge to the
saffron party, which, in absence of some
regional face, is going to mainly depend on
the grassroot strategy ofAmit Shah and the
popular face of Narendra Modi.
Although various surveys conducted so
far indicate a contradictory position, but
still Congress, if not having a marginal
lead, is believed to have at least a neck to
neck fight with the BJP.
After the appointment of CP Joshi as the
State party chief and Rajendra Rathore as
the CLP leader, Modi-Shah have executed
one more smart move by putting the Union
Minister of ParliamentaryAffairs, Coal and
Mines Pralhad Joshi as Rajasthan election
in-charge. Moreover, former Haryana Con-
gress leader Kuldeep Bishnoi and former
Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel
are appointed as co-in charges and the duo
will coordinate the electioneering for the
saffron party.
It may only be a coincidence that all
the 3 leaders enjoy a very ‘cordial rela-
tionship’and wavelength with the tower-
ing Rajasthan BJP leader, who is based
in New Delhi and not handling the ‘ac-
tive politics’. Incidentally, as a party
man, this leader is the only one who
is confident of BJPwinning 140
seats in upcoming polls.

fter a stum-
ble at the fi-
nal hurdle of
the World
Test Cham-
pionship (WTC), Team
India is all set to rekindle
the race for the Test mace
again in West Indies from
Wednesday. The two sides
meet after a gap of 4 years
in the longest format of the
game and while it is a con-
test between two sides at
the opposite end of Test
rankings, both have a lot to
gain from the 2-test series
followed by 3 ODIs and 5
T20 games.
As they prepare for the
challenge, it’s not been a
happy few weeks for both
Team India and the Wind-
ies side. While India lost
the second WTC finals in
a row, the two-time World
Champions, West Indies,
failed to qualify for the
ODI World Cup to be held
in India later this year. It is
ironic that post the historic
1983 World Cup victory,
one which was celebrated
just a fortnight ago as the
40th year that ‘changed the
game’, the two teams have
had a drastic swing in their
cricketing fortunes.
When India lifted the
1983 World Cup, it was
deemed a miracle as they
had beaten the mighty
West Indians who won the
previous two editions
comfortably. But since
then, the rise and fall of
the two sides has been
quite dramatic and now as
India play in the Caribbe-
an islands, the odds are
heavily stacked in their
favor to win another Test
series and anything less
than a 2-0 victory will be
seen as an upset!
The striking statistic is
that India has not been
beaten by Windies in Test
matches since 2002! This
is more than 21 years with-
out a win and the last 8
series between the two,
have all been comprehen-
sively won by Team India.
The second Test of the se-
ries will be the 100th be-
tween the two teams of
which the Windies have
won 30 and India 22. But
in the last 17 Tests since
2006, India has won 12
and drawn the rest, push-
ing their winning percent-
age against Windies much
higher!
Poor administration and
management have led to
this terrible downfall for
Windies cricket in the last
few decades. But Kraigg
Brathwaite, the current
Windies captain, wants to
look ahead and start with a
fresh mindset against In-
dia. He claims his players
understand the challenge
and has urged Caribbean
cricket fans to come to the
matches in large numbers
and support their team. At
the moment, West Indies
players are preparing in a
training camp but the se-
lectors are yet to announce
the Test squad!
The Indian team is ex-
pected to dominate the
contests but they have
problems of their own.
While BCCI is the richest
board in the world and
Team India has often
topped ICC rankings
across formats, World
Championship Trophies
have been missing from
their cabinet for the past
decade. Poor selection
calls have been heavily
criticised by experts. Sunil
Gavaskar had recently
said that dropping
Chesteshwar Pujara from
the Test side after a poor
WTC final was just seek-
ing a “scapegoat” for col-
lective batting failures.
Moreover, a surprising
decision, one that bemused
many, was taken when
Ajinkya Rahane was made
the Vice Captain of the
Test team once again. He
was the highest run scorer
in the WTC finals but had
been out of the team for the
last 18 months! Sourav
Ganguly was displeased
by this wavering criteria,
terming it as “hot and
cold” and called for con-
sistency in selections. On
the bowling side, though
the spin department
manned by R Ashwin and
Ravindra Jadeja looks
classy, the pacers, except
for Mohammed Siraj are a
rather untried bunch and
seem far from menacing.
The Rohit Sharma-led
outfit reached the Carib-
bean 10 days before the
start of the Test series. For
the Tests, India has picked
three newcomers in Ya-
shasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj
Gaikwad and Mukesh Ku-
mar. While Jaiswal and
Gaikwad are big IPL
names, Mukesh is a medi-
um pacer who has played
an important part for Ben-
gal in the last few seasons.
But yet again the mantle of
the batting will fall on
proven stalwarts like Virat
and Rohit. Their batting
form holds the key for In-
dia to do well not in this
series but also for the rest
of the year.
Having got the desired
time to acclimatize to the
conditions and prepare
well, the Indian side would
be determined to start the
new WTC cycle on a high.
They will look to get 2
wins under their belt for
this WTC cycle may be a
challenging one for them.
But as is often said, “well
begun is half done.” In that
sense the battle with the
Windies will be vital for
Team India to get off to a
splendid start!

SHOULD POLITICAL
PEOPLE ALSO HANG
THEIR BOOTS
fter breaking away from the Nationalist Con-
gress Party to join hands with Eknath Shinde
and Devendra Fadnavis as Deputy Chief
Minister, Ajit Pawar told his uncle Sharad Pawar to
hang his boots as he is now 83 years of age. Pawar
senior’s daughter Supriya Sule responded with “age
is just a number”. She justified Sharad Pawar at the
helm “as there is absolutely no match for Sharad Pa-
war who has just crossed 83”.
When Narendra Modi became Prime Minister the
BJP fixed a cut-off age of 75 for all its leaders to
remain in politics. As a consequence senior leaders
like LK Advani and Dr Murli Manohar Joshi were
sent packing. As Prime Minister Modi approaches
the cut off year one would like to give a serious
thought to Sule’s remark on age being just a number.
Modi is physically fit, is blessed with a sharp politi-
cal mind and has a huge following so why shouldn’t
he be considered for another term after 2029?
In the United States President Joe Biden is ready
to throw his hat in the ring one more time although
he will be 81 in 2024. His rival, former President
Donald Trump, will be 71. Biden has started showing
signs of ageing and should consider retirement but the
power of the Presidency is irresistible. The oldest
head of state is Paul Biya, President of Cameroon. He
is over 90 years old. Coming back to Sharad Pawar,
he knows that the NCP without him will flounder. He
also has to pass the baton to Supriya, his daughter.

A new ‘all-time record’
has been established in
state’s administrative
history as for the first
time, five IAS are on
APO and one IAS is un-
der suspension. Never
before has there ever
been an example of more
than one IAS being on
APO. The IAS that are
under APO currently are
Anandhi, Rajan Vishal,
Archana Singh, Inderjeet
Singh and Neha Giri.
Anandhi has returned
after 30 months from
LBS Academy at Mus-
soorie and Rajan, Archa-
na, Inderjeet and Neha
have returned after one
year study leave. This is
a rare coincidence that
five IAS have to wait for
their posting and no one
can say for certain how
long this wait will last.
When in February 2023,
Punam returned to Ra-
jasthan cadre, with great
‘difficulty,’ having spent
7 years on deputation in
her home state, she too
was on APO for 42 days.
Similarly, when Arushi
Malik returned in June
last month after complet-
ing her foreign study, she
too was kept on APO by
DoP for two weeks.
This clearly indicates
that there are no norms or
rules as to how long an
official can be kept on
APO. This can stretch
from a day to several
months. It is being be-
lieved that although after
her return Arushi Malik
has been given a lack lus-
tre posting, but the 5
APO IAS will be given
crucial responsibilities.
Notably, along with
APO, one IAS is cur-
rently on suspension.
2019 batch IAS Girdhar,
while on post an IAS is
put on APO suspen-
sion is like a blot on
career, which is a huge
issue. Girdhar’s future is
uncertain as of now.

hink Neetu
Singh and
most of us
will think
of sweet,
cute, natu-
ral, sun-
shine, innocent etc, from
day one till now, Neetu is
one of the few stars who is
really a star on screen and
off the screen. If Neetu came
across as innocent, easy-
going and earnest in her
movies, she was and is much
the same in real life too. I
really liked her for her open-
ness, she was sweetly plump
then and totally unaffected-
breezing through her roles
with her limpid eyes and
shiny hair.
Remember Bachhe man
ke sachhe, in Do Kaliyan
where Neetu, the child artiste
played a double role, one of
her best. But I fell in total
love with her when I watched
Lekar hum deewana dil from
the movie Yaadon ki Baraat.
She hit the spot with her cute
bubbliness and careless sen-
sual moves. Neetu Singh has the rare
ability to bring out the best in
her co-stars (male and fe-
male) at the risk of being re-
petitive, in both reel and real
life be it Randhir Kapoor
with whom she started her
adult career or Shashi Ka-
poor. She shone in the action
comedy Maha Chor with
Rajesh Khanna as she did in
the thriller Chakravyuha. I
quite liked her in Chorni with
Jeetendra and in the multi-
starrer Dharma Veer and The
Burning Train. She carried
her own even with Amitabh
in Yaarana, The Great Gam-
bler and Adalat.
But the on-screen roman-
tic chemistry was super with
her beau and the love of her
life- Rishi Kapoor with
whom she did around 12
films. Neetu Singh gave up
the screen at 21, an age
when actresses start their
careers. She came back after
26 years starring opposite
Rishi again in Love aaj Kal
and Do Dooni chaar, Jab
Tak hai Jaan, Besharam and
now Jug Jug Jeeyo- showing
very clearly that she is still
the talented Neetu Singh
who can steal the show and
carry a movie with her
charm and skills. Today, she
is a model for women with
her svelte figure and truly is
an iconic woman who has
played any and every role
with perfection- both on-
screen and off-screen.

Hanwant
S i n g h j i
was a ruler
with wide
interests
and varied
personal qualities as a scien-
tist, magician, aviator, secu-
lar politician, liberal demo-
crat, patriot, patron of art
music, and a flamboyant
dynamic leader.
He was born on 9th June
1923.At the age of 13, he was
sent off to Ajmer to attend
Mayo College. Since child-
hood, he was interested in the
study making of small fire-
arms. In 1942, at the age of
19, (when currently most of
the students in India are pre-
paring for IIT- Joint Entrance
Exams) he made a Tommy-
gun which was considered
one of the finest in the world
at those times; as it was light
in weight, user friendly, with
multiple cartridge firing capa-
bilities and emitted less sound
than any other gun in the
same category. He made a
Novel .9 mm carbine in 1945
which was found useful by
the then Presiding Officer at
the arms factory of Govt. of
India at Isapur. Besides this,
he suggested improvements
in the existing .303 Rifle used
by the Indian Army and his
suggestions were welcomed
and corrections were made to
the existing rifle. He also in-
vented a Pen Pistol, perhaps
first among the category of
personalised mini weapons.
He also invented the Cam-
era Gun'', which was special-
ly designed to assure steady
aiming. Designed to take
various telescopic lenses, the
rifle-butted camera brought
distant subjects up close, per-
mitting exact aiming of the
subjects as far as half a mile.
Aviation was another sub-
ject which interested him. He
initiated the expansion and
upgradation of the Jodhpur
Flying Club and the Indian
Airforce Training Centre in
Jodhpur. He was conferred
with the rank of Honorary
Group Captain for his inter-
est, efforts and patronage of
theAir Force TrainingAcad-
emy. Little did he know that
his ability as a skilled pilot
could save someone's life but
would be remembered as a
service to the nation. On 30th
March 1949, he along with
the Iron Man of India - Sard-
ar Vallabh Bhai Patel took a
flight from Delhi to Jaipur to
inaugurate the newly created
state of Greater Rajasthan.
En route there was some
technical error in the air-
craft's engine and emergency
landing was the only option.
The pilot got nervous as he
could only see the Aravali
mountain ranges and no suit-
able and safe space for land-
ing. In this situation, the Ma-
haraja of Jodhpur-Hanwant
Singh himself took over the
cockpit and safely landed the
plane in a river bed at Shah-
pura which is 60 km from
Jaipur. Indeed a service to
the nation of the highest or-
der, as it saved the life of
Sardar Patel - The Iron Man
Of India who led India's free-
dom struggle and played an
important role in the integra-
tion of United India.
The Maharaja was a skilled
magician too and performed
tricks created by himself. In
1948 he gave a magical per-
formance at the Piccadilly
Theater in London and the
performance was such that he
was admitted to the prestig-
ious Magic Circle in Eng-
land to which only a select
few expert magicians were
members. His interest in Sci-
ence Technology and his
zest for imparting technical
knowledge to the people of
Jodhpur led to the establish-
ment of an Engineering Col-
lege in Jodhpur. Very few
people are aware it was him,
who gave the then Deoli
House and its adjoining land
to establish the first engineer-
ing college of Western Ra-
jasthan. Later Seth Magni
Ram Bangur a Marwari busi-
nessman from Deedwana
generously funded this col-
lege and hence it is known as
Mugniram Bangur Memorial
or MBM Engineering College
now MBM University. Be-
sides this, he started scholar-
ships for meritorious students
who wanted to pursue techni-
cal education at premiere in-
stitutes in India and abroad.
The Agnipath scheme for
the youth of India to join the
Armed Forces serving the
Nation recently has been in-
troduced in India. Hanwant
Singhji had envisioned this
about 8 decades ago and took
the pioneering step of intro-
ducing compulsory military
training to students from
class 8th onwards in Marwar.
Establishing perhaps one
of the initial radio stations in
Princely India at Jodhpur
was also a modern technical
advancement that Jodhpur
witnessed in his times.
He invited and engaged
Pandit Balkishan Kaul (Pt.
Jawaharlal Nehru's brother-
in-law) to make a programme
for Desertification Control,
Water Conservation and
Plantation based on modern
techniques. He also appoint-
ed the leading Botanist of
India Dr. Mohan Lal Gattani
as ChiefAgricultureAdvisor.
The pre-independent India
mainly consisted of British
India and Princely India. The
people in British India were
aware of the freedom move-
ment and were witnesses to
responsible self-government
which were elected. They
were aware of the electoral
process which would be part
of Indian democracy after in-
dependence. For the people of
Princely India which was
ruled by the Maharajas, it was
an unknown phenomenon.
Maharaja Hanwant Singhji
was educated and was aware
of democracy as a vital pro-
cess for any nation, with the
active participation of its citi-
zens, especially voting in the
elections. He was a liberal
democrat and secular leader,
who had faith in his people
and was aware that the people
of Marwar shall vote and sup-
port him and his candidates.
The first general elections of
1952 witnessed his democrat-
ic spirit and flamboyant lead-
ership; when he gave the fa-
mous slogans to his people
during electoral campaigns, I
Am Not Away From
You and IAm No Maharaja;
You Are The Maharaja. The
peoplerespondedtohimwhen
they voted in his favour and
uprooted Congress and its
popular leaders. He was the
onlyMaharajainIndiatohave
opposed Congress and defeat-
ed them badly in the first gen-
eral elections, with a landslide
victory for him and his party.
Once he was asked what he
would do after the merger of
Jodhpur to the Indian Domin-
ion; when he would cease to
be a Maharaja. He politely
answered, I can earn my live-
lihood throughAviation, or as
a performing Magician or as a
Firearms Manufacturer.
On 26th January 1952, he
was killed in an air crash at
the age of 28 years, yes at 28!
still at such a young age and
in such a short span of time
he achieved and accom-
plished so much. On the oc-
casion of his 100th Birth An-
niversary; I request all read-
ers to join me in remember-
ing and paying homage
to His Late Highness Maha-
raja Hanwant Singh - an Avi-
ator, Magician and Scientist,
who loved his people and
said, I Am Not Away From
You. Surely he isn't away
from us and shall remain in
our memories forever for his
unparalleled contribution.

ceptional hard work
put in by the entire
team.
The models, though
not walking the ramp,
exhibited unwavering
enthusiasm while show-
casing the vibrant world
of fashion in Jaipur.
Despite the constraints
of time, they presented an im-
pressive array of 30 dresses,
displaying their remarkable
creativity.These models com-
prised a group of 15 national
and international Elite Miss
Rajasthan contestants who ig-
nited the T-20 fashion con-
cept. Their fashion walk,
reminiscent of the fast-paced
nature of cricket matches, fea-
tured captivatingWestern col-
lections. This innovative con-
cept aims to cater to fashion
enthusiasts who face time
limitations, providing them
with an affordable glimpse
into the world of fashion in
Jaipur. Renowned designer
Avni Odichya presented an
exquisite Western collection
during the show, where 30
dresses gracefully adorned the
floor within a mere 20 min-
utes. The event was skillfully
choreographed and managed
by Gaurav Gaur and Akank-
sha Bhalla, while the models
received styling expertise
from Headman Salon.
Gaurav Gaur revealed that
the models underwent spe-
cial training to master the
art of presenting a substan-
tial number of dresses in
such a limited timeframe. In
the absence of a traditional
ramp, the models relied sole-
ly on their poise and charm to
enhance the beauty of the
show. In this unique concept,
the floor itself became the
runway. The show garnered
immense attention and admi-
ration, attracting 150 fashion
lovers from Jaipur, who
wholeheartedly appreciated
the designer’s collection and
motivated the models with
their presence. The T-20
fashion concept injected a
burst of fast-paced fashion
into Jaipur, captivating fash-
ion enthusiasts with its dis-
tinctive approach and stun-
ning collections.

  • 3. ADITI NAGAR fter mammoth public meet- ings at Dausa, Bhilwara, Nathdwara and Ajmer, now once again ‘Game Changer’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Bikaner today. While Modi will inaugurate the Greenfield Expressway between Amritsar and Jamnagar, built at a cost of `20,000 crore, he will also inaugu- rate various other developmental projects worth crore of rupees. Notably, this will be PM Modi’s seventh visit to the desert State in the past nine months, which includes his visits to Abu Road in September 2022 and Banswara in November 2022, a hint to how serious the saffron party is regarding its future in Rajasthan. On the flip side, with PM’s visit, the BJP is eyeing to ‘smitten’voters of no less than 30 Assembly and 4 Lok Sabha constituen- cies. So far, top BJP leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh have visited Udaipur, Bharatpur and Jodhpur respectively. In such a short span of 3 months, Modi has again chosen to visit Rajasthan with an ‘indirect’ idea of mobilising BJP workers for upcoming 2023 Assembly polls in Ra- jasthan. On the same lines, another master- mind strategist Union Home MinisterAmit Shah has also visited Bharatpur and Udaipur and tried to change the Congress ‘roadmap’in these areas. There is no doubt about it that a recent Gehlot - Pilot patch up (at least on the face value), massive Gehlot freebie campaign and a likely Muslim vote polarisation poses a serious challenge to the saffron party, which, in absence of some regional face, is going to mainly depend on the grassroot strategy ofAmit Shah and the popular face of Narendra Modi. Although various surveys conducted so far indicate a contradictory position, but still Congress, if not having a marginal lead, is believed to have at least a neck to neck fight with the BJP. After the appointment of CP Joshi as the State party chief and Rajendra Rathore as the CLP leader, Modi-Shah have executed one more smart move by putting the Union Minister of ParliamentaryAffairs, Coal and Mines Pralhad Joshi as Rajasthan election in-charge. Moreover, former Haryana Con- gress leader Kuldeep Bishnoi and former Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel are appointed as co-in charges and the duo will coordinate the electioneering for the saffron party. It may only be a coincidence that all the 3 leaders enjoy a very ‘cordial rela- tionship’and wavelength with the tower- ing Rajasthan BJP leader, who is based in New Delhi and not handling the ‘ac- tive politics’. Incidentally, as a party man, this leader is the only one who is confident of BJPwinning 140 seats in upcoming polls. • 7. fter a stum- ble at the fi- nal hurdle of the World Test Cham- pionship (WTC), Team India is all set to rekindle the race for the Test mace again in West Indies from Wednesday. The two sides meet after a gap of 4 years in the longest format of the game and while it is a con- test between two sides at the opposite end of Test rankings, both have a lot to gain from the 2-test series followed by 3 ODIs and 5 T20 games. As they prepare for the challenge, it’s not been a happy few weeks for both Team India and the Wind- ies side. While India lost the second WTC finals in a row, the two-time World Champions, West Indies, failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup to be held in India later this year. It is ironic that post the historic 1983 World Cup victory, one which was celebrated just a fortnight ago as the 40th year that ‘changed the game’, the two teams have had a drastic swing in their cricketing fortunes. When India lifted the 1983 World Cup, it was deemed a miracle as they had beaten the mighty West Indians who won the previous two editions comfortably. But since then, the rise and fall of the two sides has been quite dramatic and now as India play in the Caribbe- an islands, the odds are heavily stacked in their favor to win another Test series and anything less than a 2-0 victory will be seen as an upset! The striking statistic is that India has not been beaten by Windies in Test matches since 2002! This is more than 21 years with- out a win and the last 8 series between the two, have all been comprehen- sively won by Team India. The second Test of the se- ries will be the 100th be- tween the two teams of which the Windies have won 30 and India 22. But in the last 17 Tests since 2006, India has won 12 and drawn the rest, push- ing their winning percent- age against Windies much higher! Poor administration and management have led to this terrible downfall for Windies cricket in the last few decades. But Kraigg Brathwaite, the current Windies captain, wants to look ahead and start with a fresh mindset against In- dia. He claims his players understand the challenge and has urged Caribbean cricket fans to come to the matches in large numbers and support their team. At the moment, West Indies players are preparing in a training camp but the se- lectors are yet to announce the Test squad! The Indian team is ex- pected to dominate the contests but they have problems of their own. While BCCI is the richest board in the world and Team India has often topped ICC rankings across formats, World Championship Trophies have been missing from their cabinet for the past decade. Poor selection calls have been heavily criticised by experts. Sunil Gavaskar had recently said that dropping Chesteshwar Pujara from the Test side after a poor WTC final was just seek- ing a “scapegoat” for col- lective batting failures. Moreover, a surprising decision, one that bemused many, was taken when Ajinkya Rahane was made the Vice Captain of the Test team once again. He was the highest run scorer in the WTC finals but had been out of the team for the last 18 months! Sourav Ganguly was displeased by this wavering criteria, terming it as “hot and cold” and called for con- sistency in selections. On the bowling side, though the spin department manned by R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja looks classy, the pacers, except for Mohammed Siraj are a rather untried bunch and seem far from menacing. The Rohit Sharma-led outfit reached the Carib- bean 10 days before the start of the Test series. For the Tests, India has picked three newcomers in Ya- shasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mukesh Ku- mar. While Jaiswal and Gaikwad are big IPL names, Mukesh is a medi- um pacer who has played an important part for Ben- gal in the last few seasons. But yet again the mantle of the batting will fall on proven stalwarts like Virat and Rohit. Their batting form holds the key for In- dia to do well not in this series but also for the rest of the year. Having got the desired time to acclimatize to the conditions and prepare well, the Indian side would be determined to start the new WTC cycle on a high. They will look to get 2 wins under their belt for this WTC cycle may be a challenging one for them. But as is often said, “well begun is half done.” In that sense the battle with the Windies will be vital for Team India to get off to a splendid start! Pawar senior’s daughter Supriya Sule responded with “age is just a number”. She justified Sharad Pawar at the helm “as there is absolutely no match for Sharad Pa- war who has just crossed 83”. When Narendra Modi became Prime Minister the BJP fixed a cut-off age of 75 for all its leaders to remain in politics. As a consequence senior leaders like LK Advani and Dr Murli Manohar Joshi were sent packing. As Prime Minister Modi approaches the cut off year one would like to give a serious thought to Sule’s remark on age being just a number. Modi is physically fit, is blessed with a sharp politi- cal mind and has a huge following so why shouldn’t he be considered for another term after 2029? In the United States President Joe Biden is ready to throw his hat in the ring one more time although he will be 81 in 2024. His rival, former President Donald Trump, will be 71. Biden has started showing signs of ageing and should consider retirement but the power of the Presidency is irresistible. The oldest head of state is Paul Biya, President of Cameroon. He is over 90 years old. Coming back to Sharad Pawar, he knows that the NCP without him will flounder. He also has to pass the baton to Supriya, his daughter. A META THREADS A COMPETITION IN CYBERSPACE WITH ELON MUSK ot just earth, temperatures are soaring in the cyber world too. In a first serious challenge to Elon Musk’s Twitter, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has launched “Threads”. Within the first seven hours of its launch 10 million people had registered for the app. Thursday saw the number swell to 30 million sub- scribers and in less than 24 hours it rose to 44 million. The ad- vantage Threads us- ers will have is easy access to Instagram users, whose number runs into billions. However, their full integration is yet to happen. Threads’ us- ers also won’t have to worry about safety as they are the same as Instagram. This facility could erode Twitter’s ad base and hurt Musk more than Threads’ growing subscriber base. Tem- peramental Musk has not had easy relations with Twitter users with his decision on blue ticks and mon- etization of the platform and many looked for an alternative. Dr Jagdeesh Chandra, CEO Editor-in-Chief, First India First India Bureau Jaipur A new ‘all-time record’ has been established in state’s administrative history as for the first time, five IAS are on APO and one IAS is un- der suspension. Never before has there ever been an example of more than one IAS being on APO. The IAS that are under APO currently are Anandhi, Rajan Vishal, Archana Singh, Inderjeet Singh and Neha Giri. Anandhi has returned after 30 months from LBS Academy at Mus- soorie and Rajan, Archa- na, Inderjeet and Neha have returned after one year study leave. This is a rare coincidence that five IAS have to wait for their posting and no one can say for certain how long this wait will last. When in February 2023, Punam returned to Ra- jasthan cadre, with great ‘difficulty,’ having spent 7 years on deputation in her home state, she too was on APO for 42 days. Similarly, when Arushi Malik returned in June last month after complet- ing her foreign study, she too was kept on APO by DoP for two weeks. This clearly indicates that there are no norms or rules as to how long an official can be kept on APO. This can stretch from a day to several months. It is being be- lieved that although after her return Arushi Malik has been given a lack lus- tre posting, but the 5 APO IAS will be given crucial responsibilities. Notably, along with APO, one IAS is cur- rently on suspension. 2019 batch IAS Girdhar, while on post an IAS is put on APO suspen- sion is like a blot on career, which is a huge issue. Girdhar’s future is uncertain as of now. • 10. hink Neetu Singh and most of us will think of sweet, cute, natu- ral, sun- shine, innocent etc, from day one till now, Neetu is one of the few stars who is really a star on screen and off the screen. If Neetu came across as innocent, easy- going and earnest in her movies, she was and is much the same in real life too. I really liked her for her open- ness, she was sweetly plump then and totally unaffected- breezing through her roles with her limpid eyes and shiny hair. Remember Bachhe man ke sachhe, in Do Kaliyan where Neetu, the child artiste played a double role, one of her best. But I fell in total love with her when I watched Lekar hum deewana dil from the movie Yaadon ki Baraat. She hit the spot with her cute bubbliness and careless sen- sual moves. Neetu Singh has the rare ability to bring out the best in her co-stars (male and fe- male) at the risk of being re- petitive, in both reel and real life be it Randhir Kapoor with whom she started her adult career or Shashi Ka- poor. She shone in the action comedy Maha Chor with Rajesh Khanna as she did in the thriller Chakravyuha. I quite liked her in Chorni with Jeetendra and in the multi- starrer Dharma Veer and The Burning Train. She carried her own even with Amitabh in Yaarana, The Great Gam- bler and Adalat. But the on-screen roman- tic chemistry was super with her beau and the love of her life- Rishi Kapoor with whom she did around 12 films. Neetu Singh gave up the screen at 21, an age when actresses start their careers. She came back after 26 years starring opposite Rishi again in Love aaj Kal and Do Dooni chaar, Jab Tak hai Jaan, Besharam and now Jug Jug Jeeyo- showing very clearly that she is still the talented Neetu Singh who can steal the show and carry a movie with her charm and skills. Today, she is a model for women with her svelte figure and truly is an iconic woman who has played any and every role with perfection- both on- screen and off-screen. He was born on 9th June 1923.At the age of 13, he was sent off to Ajmer to attend Mayo College. Since child- hood, he was interested in the study making of small fire- arms. In 1942, at the age of 19, (when currently most of the students in India are pre- paring for IIT- Joint Entrance Exams) he made a Tommy- gun which was considered one of the finest in the world at those times; as it was light in weight, user friendly, with multiple cartridge firing capa- bilities and emitted less sound than any other gun in the same category. He made a Novel .9 mm carbine in 1945 which was found useful by the then Presiding Officer at the arms factory of Govt. of India at Isapur. Besides this, he suggested improvements in the existing .303 Rifle used by the Indian Army and his suggestions were welcomed and corrections were made to the existing rifle. He also in- vented a Pen Pistol, perhaps first among the category of personalised mini weapons. He also invented the Cam- era Gun'', which was special- ly designed to assure steady aiming. Designed to take various telescopic lenses, the rifle-butted camera brought distant subjects up close, per- mitting exact aiming of the subjects as far as half a mile. Aviation was another sub- ject which interested him. He initiated the expansion and upgradation of the Jodhpur Flying Club and the Indian Airforce Training Centre in Jodhpur. He was conferred with the rank of Honorary Group Captain for his inter- est, efforts and patronage of theAir Force TrainingAcad- emy. Little did he know that his ability as a skilled pilot could save someone's life but would be remembered as a service to the nation. On 30th March 1949, he along with the Iron Man of India - Sard- ar Vallabh Bhai Patel took a flight from Delhi to Jaipur to inaugurate the newly created state of Greater Rajasthan. En route there was some technical error in the air- craft's engine and emergency landing was the only option. The pilot got nervous as he could only see the Aravali mountain ranges and no suit- able and safe space for land- ing. In this situation, the Ma- haraja of Jodhpur-Hanwant Singh himself took over the cockpit and safely landed the plane in a river bed at Shah- pura which is 60 km from Jaipur. Indeed a service to the nation of the highest or- der, as it saved the life of Sardar Patel - The Iron Man Of India who led India's free- dom struggle and played an important role in the integra- tion of United India. The Maharaja was a skilled magician too and performed tricks created by himself. In 1948 he gave a magical per- formance at the Piccadilly Theater in London and the performance was such that he was admitted to the prestig- ious Magic Circle in Eng- land to which only a select few expert magicians were members. His interest in Sci- ence Technology and his zest for imparting technical knowledge to the people of Jodhpur led to the establish- ment of an Engineering Col- lege in Jodhpur. Very few people are aware it was him, who gave the then Deoli House and its adjoining land to establish the first engineer- ing college of Western Ra- jasthan. Later Seth Magni Ram Bangur a Marwari busi- nessman from Deedwana generously funded this col- lege and hence it is known as Mugniram Bangur Memorial or MBM Engineering College now MBM University. Be- sides this, he started scholar- ships for meritorious students who wanted to pursue techni- cal education at premiere in- stitutes in India and abroad. The Agnipath scheme for the youth of India to join the Armed Forces serving the Nation recently has been in- troduced in India. Hanwant Singhji had envisioned this about 8 decades ago and took the pioneering step of intro- ducing compulsory military training to students from class 8th onwards in Marwar. Establishing perhaps one of the initial radio stations in Princely India at Jodhpur was also a modern technical advancement that Jodhpur witnessed in his times. He invited and engaged Pandit Balkishan Kaul (Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru's brother- in-law) to make a programme for Desertification Control, Water Conservation and Plantation based on modern techniques. He also appoint- ed the leading Botanist of India Dr. Mohan Lal Gattani as ChiefAgricultureAdvisor. The pre-independent India mainly consisted of British India and Princely India. The people in British India were aware of the freedom move- ment and were witnesses to responsible self-government which were elected. They were aware of the electoral process which would be part of Indian democracy after in- dependence. For the people of Princely India which was ruled by the Maharajas, it was an unknown phenomenon. Maharaja Hanwant Singhji was educated and was aware of democracy as a vital pro- cess for any nation, with the active participation of its citi- zens, especially voting in the elections. He was a liberal democrat and secular leader, who had faith in his people and was aware that the people of Marwar shall vote and sup- port him and his candidates. The first general elections of 1952 witnessed his democrat- ic spirit and flamboyant lead- ership; when he gave the fa- mous slogans to his people during electoral campaigns, I Am Not Away From You and IAm No Maharaja; You Are The Maharaja. The peoplerespondedtohimwhen they voted in his favour and uprooted Congress and its popular leaders. He was the onlyMaharajainIndiatohave opposed Congress and defeat- ed them badly in the first gen- eral elections, with a landslide victory for him and his party. Once he was asked what he would do after the merger of Jodhpur to the Indian Domin- ion; when he would cease to be a Maharaja. He politely answered, I can earn my live- lihood throughAviation, or as a performing Magician or as a Firearms Manufacturer. On 26th January 1952, he was killed in an air crash at the age of 28 years, yes at 28! still at such a young age and in such a short span of time he achieved and accom- plished so much. On the oc- casion of his 100th Birth An- niversary; I request all read- ers to join me in remember- ing and paying homage to His Late Highness Maha- raja Hanwant Singh - an Avi- ator, Magician and Scientist, who loved his people and said, I Am Not Away From You.
