The basis of new India is its
youth power. To empower
them, PM Modi is working
continuously. PM Modi
Ji’s directive to recruit 10
lakhs in a mission mode
in all government depart-
ments and ministries in 1.5
years will bring new hope
and confidence among the
youth. Thank you PM @
narendramodi ji for this. Rahul Gandhi @RahulGandhi
Just like 8 years ago, youths were promised
2 crore jobs every year, in the same way
now it is the turn of 10 lakh government jobs. This
is not a government of jumlas, it is a government of
‘maha jumlas’. The Prime Minister is not an expert in
creating jobs, but in making ‘News’ on jobs.

Venkaiah Naidu seeks land for
Hindu temple, crematorium
for Indian expats in Qatar
Renni Abraham
Mumbai: Vice-Presi-
dent Venkaiah Naidu
has requested Qatar’s
Prime Minister, Khalid
bin Khalifa bin Ab-
dulaziz Al Thani and
Deputy Amir, Sheikh
Abdullah In Hamad Al
Thani and requested
land for the construc-
tion a Hindu temple
and cremation grounds
on behalf of the 7.5
lakh Indian residents
in the Gulf nation.
The meeting was
held during Naidu’s
June 4-7 visit to Qatar,
accompaniedbyformer
Bihar deputy Chief
Minister Sushil Kumar
Modi, amid continuing
protests over the “ob-
jectionable” comments
on Islamic prophet Mu-
hammad by BJP
spokespersons Nupur
Sharma and Naveen
Jindal, since expelled
and suspended respec-
tively by the party
.
“The Qatar govern-
ment was appreciative
of the immediate ac-
tion taken by the Indi-
an government to as-
suage their sentiments
after the controversy
broke out. Even the Ku-
wait government has
decided to crack down
and deport those ex-
pats, mostly in the Fa-
haheel area, who par-
ticipated in a demon-
stration organized af-
ter Friday prayers last
week,” a senior BJP
leader told First India.
The number of Indi-
an, Pakistani and other
expats who were ar-
rested and will be duly
deported back to their
countries is yet to be
madepublicbyKuwaiti
authorities.
In a tweet, Sushil Ku-
mar Modi confirmed
Naidu’s request for a
Hindu temple and Hin-
du cremation grounds,
which was accepted
with due sensitivity by
the Qatar government,
which initially issuing
a note of protest over
the BJP spokespersons’
comments, were appre-
ciative of the Indian
government’s prompt
handling of the issue.
Modi further noted
that Naidu asked for
the land for the two
stated purposes since
currently Indian (Hin-
dus) expats in Qatar
are forced to either
bury their deceased, or
fly their bodies back to
India since Qatar does
not permit cremation.
Naidu also interact-
ed with a large contin-
gent of Indian expats
in Qatar at an event fa-
cilitated by the Bihar
Foundation, a Bihar
government-linked so-
cial service organiza-
tion.
Headed by chairper-
son Ravi Srivastav and
CEO Abhay Kumar, the
foundation was highly
active during the pan-
demic. In addition to
providing services in-
cluding dry rations,
two daily meals and
shelter to migrant
worker families who
were stranded during
the 2020 lockdown, they
alone were able to
reach out to over five-
and-a-half lakh mi-
grants, especially in
Mumbai and the rest of
Maharashtra.

Many Maharashtrian

First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Bombay
High Court on Mon-
day pulled up the Ma-
harashtra government
over the arrest of a
21-year-old student for
alleged defamatory
posts against NCP
president Sharad Pa-
war and asked if the
government would
take cognizance of
every tweet it deems
offensive.
The HC observed that
even Pawar, a former
Union minister and vet-
eran politician, would
not like for the student
to remain in jail.
A division bench
headed by Justice SS
Shinde directed the
public prosecutor to
take instructions from
the state home depart-
ment and let it know if
they are willing to make
a statement of no objec-
tion to the release of the
pharmacy student.
The court was hear-
ingapetitionfiledbythe
student, Nikhil Bhamre,
challenging the cases
lodged against him over
the posts and seeking
immediate release.
Thecourt,afterperus-
ing the tweets posted by
Bhamre, noted that they
do not name anyone.
“Nobody is named...

are 100s and 1000s of
tweets posted every day
.
Will you take cogni-
zance of each and every
tweet? We do not want
FIRs like these,” Justice
Shinde said.
Justice Shinde fur-
ther said booking a per-
son in such a case was
possibly more damag-
ing to the reputation of
Pawar (than the posts
themselves).
“If you start taking
actions like this, then
you end up damaging
the name of the person
(Pawar) who has re-
ceived the second-high-
est civilian award (Pad-
ma Vibhushan). Even

towering personality’s
reputation to go down,”
the judge noted.
The court, while post-
ing the matter for fur-
ther hearing on June 16,
directed the prosecutor
totakeinstructionsfrom
the Home Department
and make a statement of
no objection to releasing
Bhamre from custody
.
“In our humble opin-
ion,thegraceof thestate

ment,” the bench added.

like this, then
you end up damaging
the name of the person
(Pawar) who has re-
ceived the second-
highest civilian award
(Padma Vibhushan).
Even the towering per-
sonality (Pawar) will
not like that such a
student be kept in jail.

Start Kharif sowing after
75mm rainfall: Agri dept
Three held for ‘theft’ of gold and
diamond jewellery worth `4 crore
First India Bureau
Nagpur: Ahead of
the Kharif season,
the Maharashtra ag-
riculture depart-
ment has advised
farmers in the Nag-
pur division to start
sowing seeds only
after the region re-
ceives75mm-100mm
rainfall which will
create enough mois-
ture in the soil,
an official said on
Tuesday
.
The Nagpur divi-
sionincludesWardha,
Gadchiroli,Bhandara,
Gondia, Chandrapur
and Nagpur districts.
The agriculture de-
partment has started
preparations for the
Kharif season with
seeds of major crops
and fertilizers being
made available for
farmers in the mar-
ket, the agriculture
official said.
Joint Director (Ag-
riculture), Nagpur Di-
vision, Ravindra Bho-
sle said that the sow-
ing of seeds for the
Kharif should be tak-
en up only after the
regionreceives75mm
to100mmrainfalland
the depth of sowing
should be 3-4 cm.
Bhosle further said
that farmers should
go for seed treatment
before sowing
them and use appro-
priate fungicides,
insecticides and
biofertilizers.
In the Nagpur divi-
sion, Wardha has
4,34,475 hectares of
planned land where
cotton, soybean, pi-
geon pea and other
crops will be sown
for the upcoming
Kharif season. Nag-
pur has 4,75,005 hec-
tares of planned
land, Bhandara has
1,99,459 hectares,
Gondia has 1,99,941
hectares, Chan-
drapur has 4,87,819
and Gadchiroli has
2,14,916 hectares.
He said concerns
had been raised
over the shortage
of imported Phos-
phatic fertilisers due
to the Ukraine-Rus-
sia war but there is
no such shortfall and
the demand will be
met soon.
Mumbai (PTI): Three
persons have been ar-
rested here for alleg-
edly stealing gold
and diamond jewel-
lery worth `4 crore
from a rented house
in south Mumbai, po-
lice said on Tuesday.
The arrested men
were identified as
Prakash Sonu Bhuvad
(41) who works as a
sweeper, his son
Praveen (25) and Ya-
seek Dinesh Parmar
(32). Out of 6kg of sto-
len jewellery, 2kg of
jewellery was recov-
ered from their posses-
sion, a police official
said.
Deepak Jain, the
complainant, claimed
that his family had a
rented room in an old
building in Vitthal
Wadi locality which
had remained locked
for a long time. His de-
ceased father recently
“appeared in his
dream” and asked him
to visit the room and
collect the “treasure”
kept there, Jain told the
police. When he visited
the room, the owner
told him that he had the
room cleaned up as the
Jain family had not vis-
ited it for long.
As no jewellery or
any other valuables
were found inside, Jain
lodged a complaint
with the LT Marg po-
lice station.
The investigation led
the police to the Bhu-
vad father-son duo who
had allegedly stolen the
jewellery during the
cleaning and Parmar
who allegedly pur-
chased it from them.
The accused were
booked for theft and
further investigation is
on, the official said.
The Nagpur division alone will see crops sown over an area
of about 20 lakh hectares this Kharif season. —FILE PHOTO

IN-DEPTH
A BOLD NEW PLAN
TO KEEP THE ARMED
FORCES FIGHTING
FIT AND YOUNGER
he new Agnipath re-
cruitment scheme
for the Army, Air
Force and the Navy
which was unveiled
Tuesday, does hold promise to
radically transform the forces
with the infusion of fresh blood
every four years. At the end of
four years a significant percent
of the troops will get a chance to
be retained for a longer period.
These soldiers will be called Ag-
niveers. The scheme offers at-
tractive incentives for the youth
and at the same time drastically
reduces the defence budget as
the recruits will not be eligible
for pension. The scheme will be
different from the Short Service
Commission which is meant for
recruiting only officers.
Some objections to the scheme
stem from the short service pe-
riod which may not be enough
for the assimilation of Agniveer
in the larger set-up, a major re-
quirement in the armed forces.
Some retired officers chose to
call them “tourist soldiers”
whose mind may be preoccupied
with life after four years, affect-
ing operational ethos.

T
ormer judges of
the Supreme
Court and high
courts have writ-
ten a letter to the
Chief Justice of India NV Ra-
mana requesting him to take
suo motu cognizance of the
bulldozer justice being meted
out to protesters in Kanpur
and Prayagraj. Such letters
have lost their significance in
the prevailing scenario of
deep-seated biases, whether
political or communal.
To recall, in April a num-
ber of former bureaucrats
had written a letter to Prime
Minister Narendra Modi
drawing his attention to the
“politics of hate”. The PM did
not have to respond to that
letter as an equal number of
former bureaucrats, judges
and generals came together
to defend the Modi govern-
ment and questioned the mo-
tives of signatories to the let-
ter. The list of those defend-
ing the Central government
included eight judges.
This time around there
may be former judges of the
Supreme Court and high
courts who would probably
agree with the new system of
justice to silence the minori-
ties and curb democratic pro-
tests. If they also decide to
write to the CJI those in ur-
gent need of justice will have
to wait for delayed justice.
Provided they are left with
the means and the courage to
take on the system.
The letter has requested
for “suo motu cognizance”
which the courts could have
taken without being remind-
ed of it.
How would these judges
have reacted to a similar situ-
ation while they were in of-
fice? Probably, they would
have flowed with the tide.
Some of the innocent victims
must be wondering who will
protect their rights if the
courts don’t.

F
RS POLL RESULTS WILL
BOOST NDA PROSPECTS
‘PREZ’ WORTHY WIN
olitics is a game of strange
bedfellows. In rajneeti, it’s
not over till it’s over. The Saf-
fron party’s strength in
(state) assemblies suggested
that the party could retain
only 20 of the 24 Rajya Sabha
seats it held in the biennial
polls for 57 seats but as the
(electoral) process got over
and on Saturday it was real-
ised that the BJP finally won
22 and also ensured victory
of an Independent, underlin-
ing its masterstroke, pull
among unaffiliated legisla-
tors and disaffected lawmak-
ers obviously in the Opposi-
tion camp.
As it is said in cricket that
the match is not over till the
last ball is bowled, the BJP’s
better-than-expected show is
a boost to the ruling National
Democratic Alliance ahead
of the President’s poll, and is
an obvious blow to its rivals,
as the Rajya Sabha elections
have again highlighted dis-
sension and lack of cohesion
among the Opposition ranks.
The BJP’s ambitious ef-
forts to force a contest in
these states besides Ra-
jasthan by backing Independ-
ents or putting its own candi-
dates to benefit from division
in the ranks of its rivals have
paid dividends as it bagged
one extra seat each in all
states barring Rajasthan.
Astute politician and Con-
gress veteran and Rajasthan
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot
not only managed to keep his
flock of its supporting MLAs
together but also embar-
rassed the BJP by wooing
over one of its MLAs to foil
the saffron party’s efforts to
get an independent, outgoing
MP and media baron Sub-
hash Chandra, elected.
BJP is obviously happy
with the outcome, especially
in Maharashtra where the
ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi
coalition of the Shiv Sena,
the NCP and the Congress
suffered a setback despite be-
ing at the helm of power with
the BJP bagging three of the
six seats at stake!
It is also a boost to BJP
leader and former chief min-
ister Devendra Fadnavis,
who has had his share of set-
backs since losing power in
the state as he who outsmart-
ed and checkmated the Shiv
Sena.
BJP also bagged three of
the four seats in Karnataka
as its rivals the Congress and
the JD(S) could not come to a
pact and fought separately
and thus lost.
Congress veteran Bhupin-
der Singh Hooda suffered a
blow as the party’s nominee
Ajay Maken lost, with one of
its MLAs, Kuldeep Bishnoi,
voting for the BJP-backed
independent Kartikeya
Sharma, also a media entre-
preneur, and the vote of an-
other MLA turning out to be
invalid.
LOSS OF FACE
FOR HOODA
Hooda failed in his first test
after getting complete con-
trol of the party after the re-
centoverhaulingof Congress
but also in ensuring that all
legislators’ votes were cast
properly; while the cross-
voting by Kuldeep Bishnoi, a
known Hooda detractor, was
a clear writing on the wall,
another Congress vote was
also found to be invalid that
led to Maken’s defeat.
THE BISHNOI FACTOR
Even as the visibly annoyed
Congress high command has
expelled Bishnoi from all the
party posts for his cross-vot-
ing and now if he pulls the
plug on the party… it would
not only dent the Grand Old
Party’s non-Jat vote-bank in
Haryana but also make
things hugely difficult for
Hooda within the party
. Bish-
noi, a four-time MLA and
two-time MP, is younger son
of former Congress chief
minister late Bhajan Lal who
is till date the tallest non-Jat
leader of the state who was
Haryana CM for three times
and also Union minister.
Ahead of the presidential
poll, which is scheduled for
July 18 if more than one per-
son is in fray
, the Rajya Sabha
results are a morale booster
to the ruling combine.
In an electoral college of
around 10.86 lakh votes, the
BJP-led alliance is estimated
to have more than 48 per cent
of votes and is hopeful that
non-aligned regional parties
like YSR Congress and the
BJD will now support it.
MAMATA’S FRESH BID
Meanwhile, TMC chief
Mamata Banerjee has invited
leaders of 19 political parties
on June 15 to discuss the up-
coming presidential election.
Mamata said the election
gives the “perfect opportuni-
ty for all progressive opposi-
tion parties” to discuss the
future course of Indian poli-
tics. “At a time when our de-
mocracy is going through
troubling times, I believe that
a fruitful confluence of oppo-
sition voices is the need of
the hour,” she added.
Banerjee addressed the let-
ter to Congress chief Sonia
Gandhi, Shiv Sena’s Uddhav
Thackeray, Aam Aadmi Par-
ty’s Arvind Kejriwal and
Bhagwant Mann and Com-
munist Party of India (Marx-
ist) leader Pinarayi Vijayan.
Her attempt is seen as a
move to expand TMC’s na-
tional footprint after the par-
ty’s massive win in the cru-
cial 2021 Assembly elections.

New Delhi: WHO on

kind of a formality. Be-

However,inthehistoryof

will be reached with the

Asfarasalliesarecon-

formality to make them
agree. The position of
any BJP ally is not such
that they would question
the candidate chosen by
it. The allies will neces-

lies have six per cent of
the total votes. These six
per cent votes are con-

WPI INFLATION SPIKES TO
RECORD 15.88% IN MAY
New Delhi (PTI):
Wholesale price-based

The WPI-based infla-

creasing trajectory for
the third month in a
row, and remained in
double digits for the
14th consecutive month
since April last year.
“The high rate of in-

and food products etc.
As compared to the cor-
responding month of

First India Bureau
Mumbai: Warning
that surnames cannot
be the sole criteria to
determine the popula-
tion of Other Back-
ward Classes (OBCs)
in Maharashtra NCP
Minister Chhagan
Bhujbal on Tuesday
said an attempt to col-
lect empirical data
based on surnames
will be misleading.
Bhujbal, an OBC
leader, said, “The state
Backward Class Com-
mission has been con-
stituted. The process of
compiling empirical
data has begun but we
have received informa-
tion that the population
of OBCs is being deter-
mined on the basis of
surnames which is not
correct. There are com-
mon surnames which
apply to both upper
castes and OBCs. So,
surnames cannot be a
determining factor.”
The minister for food
and civil supplies in the
Maha Vikas Aghadi
government (MVA) also
demanded inclusion of
migrants in the OBC
data. “There are mi-
grants who have settled
in Mumbai for genera-
tions. You cannot ig-
nore them. The OBCs
among the migrants
should be considered
while compiling the em-
pirical data.”
Earlier, LOP Deven-
dra Fadnavis also urged
the state to ensure fool-
proof empirical data is
submitted in the court.
Last year, the Supreme
Court stayed the OBC
reservation in the local
body polls. It had direct-
ed the state government
to conduct triple tests
which mandated consti-
tution of the State
Backward Class Com-
mission, empirical data
and ensuring a ceiling
of 50% reservation.

With these additions,
the state’s COVID-19
tally reached 79,15,418,
while the death toll in-
creased to 1,47,875, the
state said in a bulletin.
On Monday, the state

ing their cumulative
count to 77,49,276 and
leaving the state with
18,267 active cases.
The recovery rate in
the state stood at

Mumbai: Unidenti-

said on Tuesday.
The Thane police’s
website was restored
by afternoon, an offi-

Several Indian web-
sites have been hacked
in the last few days and
these attacks seemed to
have originated in In-

said a senior official of
state police here.
The message that
popped up on the com-

Tuesday morning said,
“Hacked by one hat cy-
ber team”.
“Hello Indian Gov-

you make trouble with
the problem of the Is-
lamic Religion....Hurry
up and apologize to
Muslims all over the

still when our apostle
is insulted,” it added.
Controversy erupted
recently when now-sus-
pended BJP spokesper-
son Nupur Sharma al-
legedly made deroga-
tory remarks about
Prophet Muhammad.
While the BJP and In-
dian government con-
demned the remarks, it
led to strong reactions
from many Muslim
countries, and violent
protests inside India.
Police noticed the
hack, which appears to

Cyber teams worked for
over six hours and re-
stored the site, Maha-

He added that the

Mumbai: Submitting that he has been in jail
for almost 8 years pending trail, citing endless
delays due to “unnecessary adjournments” and
transfer of judges, 30-year-old geographical

the principal judge of city civil and sessions court
seeking a transfer of the case from the court
where the matter is currently assigned. Ansari is
accused of conspiring to kill people at an Ameri-

disposal of the case.
Pune: Ruby Hall Clinic, in Pune, is all set to restart
live organ transplants. The Maharashtra health
department has passed an order permitting the
hospital to resume live transplants. The depart-
ment had suspended the hospital’s organ trans-
plant registration in mid-April, a move that was
later stayed by the Bombay High Court. According
to the order, the hospital has been directed to set
up a new committee to monitor organ transplants.
Advocate Manjusha Kulkarni, legal advisor of
Ruby Hall Clinic, said, “The health directorate had
released the suspension order and now we can
resume live organ transplants.”

under Indian Penal Code Section 302 (murder)
against unidentified persons and sent the body for

Back to school? Last-minute circular causes confusion
First India Bureau
Mumbai: A last-min-
ute circular with re-
vised reopening dates
for city schools had
put several school ad-
ministrations in a fix,
with some following
the directive by wel-
coming teaching and
non-teaching staff as
well as students.
The school education
department announced
the reopening date last
month; however, educa-
tion minister Varsha
Gaikwad tweeted about
the change in dates last
week. According to the
most recent circular,
schools in districts oth-
er than Vidarbha
(where schools will reo-
pen on June 27) must
first open for teaching
and non-teaching staff
on June 13 in order to
prepare the school be-
fore students begin at-
tending on June 15.
However, several
non-state board schools
in the city did not com-
ply, causing confusion.
On Monday
, amid confu-
sion, some schools also
approached the state
education department
for clarity
.
“Most schools in the
suburbs have school
buses plying students
from primary as well as
secondary sections, so
our schools were flood-
ed with calls from wor-
ried parents who were
unsure whether they
had to send their chil-
dren to school on Mon-
day or not,” said Rajesh
Pandya, vice president
of Teacher Democratic
Front (TDF).
He added that despite
a circular released by
the school education de-
partment,manyschools
started classes for stu-
dents on Monday itself.
Several non-state
board schools in
the city did not
comply, causing
confusion
Education minister
Varsha Gaikwad
had, on June 11,
tweeted a copy of
the circular
reminding schools
to follow nCoV-
appropriate
behaviour, and
encourage their
staff to get the
booster dose.
There are common surnames which apply

studentof mine
recently came
tomeandasked
me to suggest a
poem that she
could recite at
her school’s Po-
etry Recitation Competi-
tion. I intuitively gravi-
tated to one of my favour-
ite poems titled Human
Family by Maya Angelou.
Foryourreference,I’dlike
to share that poem here
before I continue:
I note the obvious dif-
ferences
in the human family.
Some of us are serious,
some thrive on comedy.
Some declare their lives
are lived
as true profundity,
and others claim they
really live
the real reality.
The variety of our skin
tones
can confuse, bemuse,
delight,
brown and pink and
beige and purple,
tan and blue and white.
I’ve sailed upon the
seven seas
and stopped in every
land,
I’ve seen the wonders
of the world
not yet one common
man.
I know ten thousand
women
called Jane and Mary
Jane,
but I’ve not seen any
two
who really were the
same.
Mirror twins are differ-
ent
although their features
jibe,
and lovers think quite
different thoughts
while lying side by side.
We love and lose in
China,
we weep on England’s
moors,
and laugh and moan in
Guinea,
and thrive on Spanish
shores.
We seek success in Fin-
land,
are born and die in
Maine.
In minor ways we differ
,
inmajor
,we’rethesame.
I note the obvious dif-
ferences
between each sort and
type,
but we are more alike,
my friends,
than we are unalike.
We are more alike, my
friends,
than we are unalike.
We are more alike, my
friends,
than we are unalike.
The reason I thought
of sharing this specific
poem in this article is
that as we inch closer to
another landmark year
of our country’s inde-
pendence; it is the es-
sence of this poem that is
the core thought I’d like
to leave you with as we
ponder our decades of
glorious Independence.
India, our great nation,
draws immense pride
from our ethos of inclu-
sion, of our diversity,
and our multi-cultural,
multi-racial, multi-eth-
nic past and present.
However, some would
contend that this great
and beautiful diversity
is being undermined in
present-day India. That
is how we once were, di-
vided based on narrow-
mindedness and myopic
outlooks, we are, again
today! And that to me,
really puts a serious
question mark on the
entire notion of free-
dom, of true, essential,
liberty. Today freedom
means different things
to different people. Sure.
But are we not, in this
digitized, connected,
hyper-tech world, re-
gressing if we begin to
colour our outlook, be-
haviour, opinions and
decisions with the col-
our and origin of skin?
Is this the independent
country we want to live
in, one that is divided,
compartmentalized, in
mind and boundary?
What kind of a country
are we leaving for our
children? We want and
encourage kids to read
the newspaper; what
they read each day in
the papers are hate sto-
ries, communal vio-
lence, and religious un-
rest! Is that not a crying
shame? And is that not
also a huge black blot on
the notion of free India?
Hope rests now with
the young generation. I
notice through my inter-
actions with thousands
of students; that young
children are innocent,
instinctively inclusive,
fair, just, and inherently
equalist. Neither do
they differentiate based
on status, nor class or
religion. They are pure.
It is this purity and plu-
rality that we as parents,
educators and caregiv-
ers must do our utmost
to preserve and protect.
That our own biases
should not reach and in-
fluence these young
minds. We must set ex-
amples for these chil-
dren to follow and lead
with. Simple things
around the house, such
as treating staff with
care and sensitivity and
celebrating all festivals,
no matter their origin.
These kinds of acts will
be imbibed by children
as their natural and or-
ganic way of being and
shape their already in-
clusive beliefs into a life-
long, accepting ethos.
I leave you, therefore,
in this article with a sim-
ple message. Celebrate
freedom but be truly
free. Exalt liberty but
only if you understand
true liberty. And accept
your independence, only
if you are willing, to be,
independent in your
thinking. Bestow upon
our children, the gift of
true Independence and
acceptance.

At the end of four years a significant percent of the troops will get a chance to be retained for a longer period. These soldiers will be called Ag- niveers. The scheme offers at- tractive incentives for the youth and at the same time drastically reduces the defence budget as the recruits will not be eligible for pension. The scheme will be different from the Short Service Commission which is meant for recruiting only officers. Some objections to the scheme stem from the short service pe- riod which may not be enough for the assimilation of Agniveer in the larger set-up, a major re- quirement in the armed forces. Some retired officers chose to call them “tourist soldiers” whose mind may be preoccupied with life after four years, affect- ing operational ethos. TOP TWEETS T ormer judges of the Supreme Court and high courts have writ- ten a letter to the Chief Justice of India NV Ra- mana requesting him to take suo motu cognizance of the bulldozer justice being meted out to protesters in Kanpur and Prayagraj. Such letters have lost their significance in the prevailing scenario of deep-seated biases, whether political or communal. To recall, in April a num- ber of former bureaucrats had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi drawing his attention to the “politics of hate”. The PM did not have to respond to that letter as an equal number of former bureaucrats, judges and generals came together to defend the Modi govern- ment and questioned the mo- tives of signatories to the let- ter. The list of those defend- ing the Central government included eight judges. This time around there may be former judges of the Supreme Court and high courts who would probably agree with the new system of justice to silence the minori- ties and curb democratic pro- tests. If they also decide to write to the CJI those in ur- gent need of justice will have to wait for delayed justice. Provided they are left with the means and the courage to take on the system. The letter has requested for “suo motu cognizance” which the courts could have taken without being remind- ed of it. How would these judges have reacted to a similar situ- ation while they were in of- fice? Probably, they would have flowed with the tide. Some of the innocent victims must be wondering who will protect their rights if the courts don’t. The Saf- fron party’s strength in (state) assemblies suggested that the party could retain only 20 of the 24 Rajya Sabha seats it held in the biennial polls for 57 seats but as the (electoral) process got over and on Saturday it was real- ised that the BJP finally won 22 and also ensured victory of an Independent, underlin- ing its masterstroke, pull among unaffiliated legisla- tors and disaffected lawmak- ers obviously in the Opposi- tion camp. As it is said in cricket that the match is not over till the last ball is bowled, the BJP’s better-than-expected show is a boost to the ruling National Democratic Alliance ahead of the President’s poll, and is an obvious blow to its rivals, as the Rajya Sabha elections have again highlighted dis- sension and lack of cohesion among the Opposition ranks. The BJP’s ambitious ef- forts to force a contest in these states besides Ra- jasthan by backing Independ- ents or putting its own candi- dates to benefit from division in the ranks of its rivals have paid dividends as it bagged one extra seat each in all states barring Rajasthan. Astute politician and Con- gress veteran and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot not only managed to keep his flock of its supporting MLAs together but also embar- rassed the BJP by wooing over one of its MLAs to foil the saffron party’s efforts to get an independent, outgoing MP and media baron Sub- hash Chandra, elected. BJP is obviously happy with the outcome, especially in Maharashtra where the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition of the Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress suffered a setback despite be- ing at the helm of power with the BJP bagging three of the six seats at stake! It is also a boost to BJP leader and former chief min- ister Devendra Fadnavis, who has had his share of set- backs since losing power in the state as he who outsmart- ed and checkmated the Shiv Sena. BJP also bagged three of the four seats in Karnataka as its rivals the Congress and the JD(S) could not come to a pact and fought separately and thus lost. Congress veteran Bhupin- der Singh Hooda suffered a blow as the party’s nominee Ajay Maken lost, with one of its MLAs, Kuldeep Bishnoi, voting for the BJP-backed independent Kartikeya Sharma, also a media entre- preneur, and the vote of an- other MLA turning out to be invalid. LOSS OF FACE FOR HOODA Hooda failed in his first test after getting complete con- trol of the party after the re- centoverhaulingof Congress but also in ensuring that all legislators’ votes were cast properly; while the cross- voting by Kuldeep Bishnoi, a known Hooda detractor, was a clear writing on the wall, another Congress vote was also found to be invalid that led to Maken’s defeat. THE BISHNOI FACTOR Even as the visibly annoyed Congress high command has expelled Bishnoi from all the party posts for his cross-vot- ing and now if he pulls the plug on the party… it would not only dent the Grand Old Party’s non-Jat vote-bank in Haryana but also make things hugely difficult for Hooda within the party . Bish- noi, a four-time MLA and two-time MP, is younger son of former Congress chief minister late Bhajan Lal who is till date the tallest non-Jat leader of the state who was Haryana CM for three times and also Union minister. Ahead of the presidential poll, which is scheduled for July 18 if more than one per- son is in fray , the Rajya Sabha results are a morale booster to the ruling combine. In an electoral college of around 10.86 lakh votes, the BJP-led alliance is estimated to have more than 48 per cent of votes and is hopeful that non-aligned regional parties like YSR Congress and the BJD will now support it. MAMATA’S FRESH BID Meanwhile, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has invited leaders of 19 political parties on June 15 to discuss the up- coming presidential election. Mamata said the election gives the “perfect opportuni- ty for all progressive opposi- tion parties” to discuss the future course of Indian poli- tics. “At a time when our de- mocracy is going through troubling times, I believe that a fruitful confluence of oppo- sition voices is the need of the hour,” she added. Banerjee addressed the let- ter to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray, Aam Aadmi Par- ty’s Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann and Com- munist Party of India (Marx- ist) leader Pinarayi Vijayan. Her attempt is seen as a move to expand TMC’s na- tional footprint after the par- ty’s massive win in the cru- cial 2021 Assembly elections.  THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL P THE MATHEMATICS With one Independent MLA’s absence and one rejected vote of Congress, the House had 88 votes with each vote having a value of 100 Since a candidate required 2,934 votes to win, BJP’s Krishan Panwar won with 3,600 votes while Maken got, 2,900 However, with the help of votes of BJP coalition part- ner Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), Independents, one each of Kuldeep Bishnoi, Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the remaining votes of Panwar, Independ- ent candidate Kartikeya Sharma’s votes value was finally pegged at 2300 Mamata said the election gives the “perfect opportunity for all progressive opposition parties” to discuss the future course of Indian politics. “At a time when our democracy is going through troubling times, I believe that a fruitful confluence of opposition voices is the need of the hour,” she added. Banerjee addressed the letter to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray, AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Pinarayi Vijayan. Be- fore the election for the highest constitutional post, it is the responsibil- ity of the ruling party to talk to all the parties and try to build a consensus. New Delhi (PTI): In- dia’s job market looks optimistic with 63% of companies planning to add more staff in next three months, in a bid to speed up the recov- ery process and sustain the economic growth, a survey said on Tuesday . According to the ManpowerGroup Em- ployment Outlook Sur- vey, the labour market is indicating strong sentiments in third quarter (July-Septem- ber) of 2022, with a Net Employment Outlook of 51%, which is a re- cord high in 8 years. Net Employment Outlook is derived by taking the percentage of employers anticipat- ing total employment to increase and sub- tracting from this the percentage expecting to see a decrease in em- ployment at their loca- tion in the next quarter. For September quar- ter, 63% expect to in- crease their staffing levels, 12% anticipate a decrease in hiring in- tent and 24% do not an- ticipate any change, resulting in a season- ally adjusted Net Em- ployment Outlook of 51%. “Despite rising inflation and the geopo- litical instability, there is a positive sentiment across sectors in India in a bid to speed up the recovery process and sustain the economic growth of the country,” said Sandeep Gulati, Managing Director, ManpowerGroupIndia. When compared to the same period last year, hiring sentiments have improved by a whopping 46 percent- age points, while there is a 13 percentage points growth when compared to April-June period, the survey of more than 3,000 em- ployers in India indi- cated. JULY-SEPT HIRING OUTLOOK AT 8-YEAR HIGH WPI INFLATION SPIKES TO RECORD 15.88% IN MAY New Delhi (PTI): Wholesale price-based inflation surged to a re- cord high of 15.88% in May as crude prices rose and heatwave brought about a spike in prices of vegetables and fruits, strengthen- ing the possibility of a further interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank. The WPI-based infla- tion maintained its in- creasing trajectory for the third month in a row, and remained in double digits for the 14th consecutive month since April last year. “The high rate of in- flation in May 2022 is primarily due to rise in prices of mineral oils, crude petroleum and natural gas, food arti- cles, basic metals, non- food articles, chemicals and chemical products and food products etc. As compared to the cor- responding month of the previous year,” the commerce and indus- try ministry said in a statement. The Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based in- flation was 15.08% in April and 13.11% in May last year. Considering the old series, the last time WPI inflation was high- er than this was in Au- gust 1991, when it was at 16.06%. Inflation in food items crossed the dou- ble-digit mark after a gap of 4 months as veg- etables, potato, wheat and protein-rich items saw the price rise. Infla- tion in onion, however, saw easing at (-) 20.40%. Inflation in food arti- cles in May was 12.34%, against 8.35% in the previous month. On Monday, the city had its best AQI of the year, at 28. Bhujbal, an OBC leader, said, “The state Backward Class Com- mission has been con- stituted. The process of compiling empirical data has begun but we have received informa- tion that the population of OBCs is being deter- mined on the basis of surnames which is not correct. There are com- mon surnames which apply to both upper castes and OBCs. So, surnames cannot be a determining factor.” The minister for food and civil supplies in the Maha Vikas Aghadi government (MVA) also demanded inclusion of migrants in the OBC data. “There are mi- grants who have settled in Mumbai for genera- tions. You cannot ig- nore them. The OBCs among the migrants should be considered while compiling the em- pirical data.” Earlier, LOP Deven- dra Fadnavis also urged the state to ensure fool- proof empirical data is submitted in the court. Last-minute circular causes confusion First India Bureau Mumbai: A last-min- ute circular with re- vised reopening dates for city schools had put several school ad- ministrations in a fix, with some following the directive by wel- coming teaching and non-teaching staff as well as students. The school education department announced the reopening date last month; however, educa- tion minister Varsha Gaikwad tweeted about the change in dates last week. According to the most recent circular, schools in districts oth- er than Vidarbha (where schools will reo- pen on June 27) must first open for teaching and non-teaching staff on June 13 in order to prepare the school be- fore students begin at- tending on June 15. However, several non-state board schools in the city did not com- ply, causing confusion. On Monday , amid confu- sion, some schools also approached the state education department for clarity . “Most schools in the suburbs have school buses plying students from primary as well as secondary sections, so our schools were flood- ed with calls from wor- ried parents who were unsure whether they had to send their chil- dren to school on Mon- day or not,” said Rajesh Pandya, vice president of Teacher Democratic Front (TDF). He added that despite a circular released by the school education de- partment, manyschools started classes for stu- dents on Monday itself. Several non-state board schools in the city did not comply, causing confusion Education minister Varsha Gaikwad had, on June 11, tweeted a copy of the circular reminding schools to follow nCoV- appropriate behaviour, and encourage their staff to get the booster dose. I intuitively gravi- tated to one of my favour- ite poems titled Human Family by Maya Angelou. Foryourreference,I’dlike to share that poem here before I continue: I note the obvious dif- ferences in the human family. Some of us are serious, some thrive on comedy. Some declare their lives are lived as true profundity, and others claim they really live the real reality. The variety of our skin tones can confuse, bemuse, delight, brown and pink and beige and purple, tan and blue and white. I’ve sailed upon the seven seas and stopped in every land, I’ve seen the wonders of the world not yet one common man. I know ten thousand women called Jane and Mary Jane, but I’ve not seen any two who really were the same. Mirror twins are differ- ent although their features jibe, and lovers think quite different thoughts while lying side by side. We love and lose in China, we weep on England’s moors, and laugh and moan in Guinea, and thrive on Spanish shores. We seek success in Fin- land, are born and die in Maine. In minor ways we differ , inmajor ,we’rethesame. I note the obvious dif- ferences between each sort and type, but we are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. The reason I thought of sharing this specific poem in this article is that as we inch closer to another landmark year of our country’s inde- pendence; it is the es- sence of this poem that is the core thought I’d like to leave you with as we ponder our decades of glorious Independence. India, our great nation, draws immense pride from our ethos of inclu- sion, of our diversity, and our multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-eth- nic past and present. However, some would contend that this great and beautiful diversity is being undermined in present-day India. That is how we once were, di- vided based on narrow- mindedness and myopic outlooks, we are, again today! And that to me, really puts a serious question mark on the entire notion of free- dom, of true, essential, liberty. Today freedom means different things to different people. Sure. But are we not, in this digitized, connected, hyper-tech world, re- gressing if we begin to colour our outlook, be- haviour, opinions and decisions with the col- our and origin of skin? Is this the independent country we want to live in, one that is divided, compartmentalized, in mind and boundary? What kind of a country are we leaving for our children? We want and encourage kids to read the newspaper; what they read each day in the papers are hate sto- ries, communal vio- lence, and religious un- rest! Is that not a crying shame? And is that not also a huge black blot on the notion of free India? Hope rests now with the young generation. I notice through my inter- actions with thousands of students; that young children are innocent, instinctively inclusive, fair, just, and inherently equalist. Neither do they differentiate based on status, nor class or religion. They are pure. It is this purity and plu- rality that we as parents, educators and caregiv- ers must do our utmost to preserve and protect. That our own biases should not reach and in- fluence these young minds. We must set ex- amples for these chil- dren to follow and lead with. Simple things around the house, such as treating staff with care and sensitivity and celebrating all festivals, no matter their origin. These kinds of acts will be imbibed by children as their natural and or- ganic way of being and shape their already in- clusive beliefs into a life- long, accepting ethos. I leave you, therefore, in this article with a sim- ple message. Celebrate freedom but be truly free. Exalt liberty but only if you understand true liberty. And accept your independence, only if you are willing, to be, independent in your thinking. Bestow upon our children, the gift of true Independence and acceptance.
