Resuming the opera-

For the first time in 42
years, it was decided to
run the train in private

as OM operator.
In the last season, the
train was operated by the
OM partner on 22 out of
34 trips, in which around
790 tourists traveled. The
train has received more
than 500 advance book-

KEJRIWAL’S SILENCE
ON SWATI MALIWAL
CASE IS INTRIGUING
elhi Chief MinisterArvind Kejriwal’s silence
in the Swati Maliwal case is baffling. He can-
not even cite the Supreme Court’s bail order
in defence of his silence as the assault on Maliwal by
Kejriwal’s aide Bibhav Kumar is not in its purview.
Before Aam Aadmi Party leaders question others’si-
lence on key issues they must speak on a serious mat-
ter like the safety of women in their own party.
Swati Maliwal, a Rajya Sabha member, alleged
that she was assaulted by Kejriwal’s aide when she
went to the Delhi chief minister’s official residence.
Maliwal informed the police about the incident but
did not file a written complaint. And that makes the
case more intriguing.
AnotherAamAadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh did
meet Maliwal along with a member of the Delhi Com-
mission ofWomen. Singh accepted “misbehavior” on
the part of Kumar, Kejriwal’s personal assistant.
Yet, mum’s the word for Kejriwal.AkhileshYadav
deflecting a question on Maliwal doesn’t solve the
problem.

SC’S PROTECTIVE SHIELD
A RELIEF IN UAPA CASES
he Supreme Court’s recent order providing
protective shields to the accused under the
Prevention of Money Laundering Act
(PMLA) and the UnlawfulActivities PreventionAct
come as a relief against the two draconian laws. Or-
dering the release of NewsClick’s founderPrabir Pur-
kayastha, the Bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sand-
eep Mehta mandated that the grounds of arrest must
be supplied to the accused in writing in cases under
the UAPA.
This is an extension of the order passed in Pankaj
Bansal case in October 2023 the top court said that
the Enforcement Di-
rectorate (ED) should
furnish the grounds
of arrest under the
PMLA in writing to
an accused at the
time of arrest. Both
the orders will put a
leash on the ED.
In the case of Pur-
kayastha, the SC
found several dis-
crepancies in the re-
mand order. First, he
was arrested on Oc-
tober 3, 2023 at 5.45
pm and produced be-
fore the remand
judge at 6 am the
next day without Pu-
kayastha’s lawyers
being informed. Second, a copy of the FIR was not
shared with the accused until the remand order was
passed. Third, a post facto note was inserted after the
remand was granted.
In the court’s view “the entire exercise was done
in a clandestine manner and was nothing but a blatant
attempt to circumvent the due process of law to con-
fine the accused to police custody without informing
him of the grounds on which he has been arrested…”
The procedural guidelines would, to some extent,
prevent the misuse of UAPA and PMLA which are
being used rather too frequently these days.

ABOUT THE
EXISTENCE
The nice thing about exist-
ence is that it can be relied
upon even when you have no
idea where it came from. “To
be or not to be” is the wrong
question. We are, period.
Packaged in with being here
now is consciousness. In a
basic, irrefutable way, exist-
ence and consciousness go
together. They are our home.
We didn’t invent or create this
home. It is our beginning
and therefore our end,
wrapped into one.
Except that the words “begin-
ning” and “end” are decep-
tive. There’s no reason to
assume that existence had
a beginning. Whatever you
imagine as non-existence is a
concept, and concepts, being
mind-made, exist. Trying to
nullify existence becomes
circular. We are all at home
here and now. We couldn’t be
conscious without conscious-
ness, the infinite, causeless,
invisible, inconceivable
origin of everything.
Where do we go after we die?
Nowhere in physical terms.
We never leave home be-
cause there’s no alternative.
Non-existence is a fantasy
born of fear. I realize that
making existence the same
as consciousness sounds
alien. I’ve tried to state the
argument in simple state-
ments that anyone is free to
ponder. The answer has to
be personal. You have to look
at what life is, here and now,
to gain anything like a stable
set of conclusions. Explore
what it is like to be at home,
and you will realize that you
can never leave home. A new
worldview emerges if you
look deep enough.
WHEREDOWEGO
AFTERWEDIE?
ne of the
main reasons
that any reli-
gion or spir-
itualtradition
existsistoreassureusabout
dying. Fear of dying is uni-
versalbuthiddenfromview
in daily life. Religion and
spirituality offer hope that
this fear is baseless. Some-
thing happens after death—
this is the primary mes-
sage—andthissomethingis
good, or at least it is better
than nothing.
Despite all of its advanc-
es, science has stripped
away any reassurances
about life after death, and
most people in the modern
world accept the scientific
model. In doing so it logi-
cally follows that when the
physical body dies, in all
likelihood the immaterial
aspects of being human—
mind soul, memory per-
sonality, thoughts, feel-
ings, etc.—are extin-
guished at the same time.
What this set of beliefs
doesn’t offer is proof, in
the form of facts, data, in-
formation, and so on. In
place of religious certainty,
modern people face death,
not only with fear, doubt,
dread, and foreboding but
without a shred of empiri-
cal evidence about what
happens after death. The
reason that we casually be-
lieve that life ends with
nothing isn’t because that’s
true. Nothing is simply the
absence of facts. When
facts end, science has noth-
ing to say.
If you follow this train
of thought, both world-
views, the religious/spirit-
ual and the scientific,
amount to stories built
around assumptions that
can’t be proven. When you
ask, “Where do we go after
we die?” the two main sto-
ries—we go to heaven/hell
or we vanish into a cloud
of atoms and energy
waves—are hollow. They
confront a mystery that re-
fuses to reveal its secrets.
Where this leaves us is
really where we begin,
with the individual know-
ing that death is inevitable
but leading a life dedicated
to avoiding that fact. Fear
of death isn’t necessary.At
worst, we go to sleep just
as we do every night, and
going to sleep isn’t fearful.
“I’ll know what happens
when it happens” is a good
working attitude, but let’s
see if there is a better way.
A better way is hinted at
in T.S. Eliot’s famous line
of poetry, “In my end is my
beginning.” This isn’t a re-
ligious or mystical state-
ment, although Eliot was
deeply religious. What
these words mean is true
for everyone, atheists and
believers alike.
You can’t know how
things end until you know
how they began. This
looks like a simple state-
ment of cause and effect. If
you observe that putting a
jar upside down over a
candle makes the flame go
out, you cannot explain
this until you know the
laws of chemistry, which
reveals that fire needs oxy-
gen to keep going. Use up
the oxygen, and the flame
goes out.
But there’s a deeper
meaning to “You can’t
know how things end until
youknowhowtheybegan.”
What really matters about
death is the survival of con-
sciousness. We observe the
flame (the physical body)
goout(die),butthemystery
revolves around what hap-
pens to the non-physical
partofourselves.Thethings
previously listed— mind
soul, memory, personality,
thoughts,feelings,etc.—are
all experiences in con-
sciousness.
No matter how unique
anyone’s life is, conscious-
ness brings every human
being together in the same
place. Life is experienced
in consciousness. There-
fore, if we know how con-
sciousness begins, we
know how it ends. The op-
posite is also true. If we
don’t know how con-
sciousness begins, we
can’t possibly know how
(or if) it ends.
Suddenly there is an
opening for a true revela-
tion. If consciousness has
no beginning, then it has
no end. In other words, the
cause-and-effect model
doesn’t work when it
comes to consciousness. It
can only be explained as
existing on its own, inde-
pendent of everything that
does obey the rule of cause
and effect.
Can anything really be
outside the realm of cause
and effect? Absolutely.
The universe sprang from
a state preceding the Big
Bang that offers no clue
about matter, energy,
space, or time. Without
those things, there is no
cause and effect. At the
smallest scale of nature,
the quantum field creates
the physical universe
through ripples of poten-
tial that emerge as suba-
tomic particles and energy
waves. There is no cause
for this to happen; it just
does. Existence has no
cause, an obvious fact once
you think about it.
The New Age phrase,
“Be here now,” isn’t a
goal. You cannot help but
be here now, since that’s
the definition of existence.
There are more controver-
sial examples of things that
have no cause. Many of
your thoughts aren’t
caused by the thoughts that
preceded them. Thoughts
spring up unpredictably
from a state that isn’t a
thought. It is a silent do-
main of possibilities.
Here we are at the crux
of the answer. If you don’t
know how thoughts arise
from total silence, you can’t
possibly know how or if
thoughts end. You already
rely on the domain of silent,
invisible possibilities all the
time. You fetch memories
from this domain, along
with your vocabulary, your
next desire, and your iden-
tity, which is nothing more
than a constant process of
filing away the experiences
you identify with, calling
them “me.”
THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY
THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL
Despite all of its advances, science has stripped
away any reassurances about life after death, and
most people in the modern world accept the
scientific model. In doing so it logically follows that
when the physical body dies, in all likelihood the
immaterial aspects of being human—mind soul,
memory personality, thoughts, feelings, etc.—are
extinguished at the same time

PoK is of India and it will come back to India: Jaishankar
First India Bureau
Nashik
ExternalAffairs Minister
S Jaishankar, in a veiled
attack on the then Prime
Minister Jawaharlal
Nehru on Thursday as-
serted that India had lost
one of its crucial territo-
ries (PoK) to neighbour-
ing Pakistan due to
“someone’s weakness or
mistake”.
The External Affairs
Minister, while address-
ing an event titled ‘Vish-
wabandhu Bharat’in Ma-
harahtra’s Nashik, said:
“I think PoK is a part of
India, and due to some-
one’s weakness or mis-
take, it’s temporarily
slipped away from us”.
The minister’s critical
remarks came when
asked if China would re-
act if India crossed the
‘Lakshman Rekha’ and
integrated Pakistan-oc-
cupied Kashmir into the
Union of India. Notably,
China has been con-
structing the “China–Pa-
kistan Economic Corri-
dor”– a 3,000 km Chi-
nese infrastructure net-
work project which
passes through PoK.
Reacting to the ques-
tion, Jaishankar asserted
he does not believe there
would be any potential
action or reaction from
Beijing. In fact, he dis-
missed any ‘Lakshman
Rekha’ which exists be-
tween the two nations.
EXTERNAL AFFAIRS MINISTER’S DIG AT CANADA
Nashik: Targeting Justin Trudeau govt for giving refuge
to pro-Khalistani elements, EAM S Jaishankar on
Thursday said that further deterioration in bilateral ties
would result in a big loss for Canada. “Freedom of speech can-
not be freedom to advocate violence, freedom of speech can-
not be freedom to support separatism and terrorism in a foreign
country. A group of Khalistanis have been misusing Canada’s
freedom laws for years. But when the Canadian govt has any
political compulsions, they accommodate these people who
are also their vote bank,” he said speaking at ‘Vishwabandhu
Bharat’ interaction here. As pro-Khalistani elements continue
to indulge in anti-India activities, New Delhi has conveyed to
Ottawa on several occasions that democratic countries which
respect the rule of law should not allow intimidation by radical
elements in the name of freedom of expression.

Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi in last

Modi Ji is changing the image of Indians not just in India but

believe Modi is reviving Indian pride, Indian culture, and an-
cient Indian knowledge of yoga, mindfulness and Ayurveda,
Dr Bindukumar Kansupada, an Indian-American cardiolo-

perspective, first in education, when I went to med school,
there were only four medical schools in Mumbai. Now in In-
dia, we have more than 700 medical schools. Every district
has a medical school. There were only five IITs, if I recall,
in 1970 in India. Now we have, I believe 23 IITs, he said,
adding that he has visited India multiple times in the recent
past. Growth is enormous. Confidence level is enormous
among Indian youth. Tourism, what you call Tirth (religious)
tourism has developed. There are more airports than ever
I have seen in India. Happiness index is improving. People
are more self-sufficient and I think people are proud to be
Indians, said the Indian-American doctor.

How intense the
past few days have
been! You could
spend months just
reflecting on these
recent experiences.
But the mood isn’t
conducive to
introspection right
now. A change of

But with whom will
you share it? That
may well be the

nger can cause
one to give the
person who an-
noys the silent
t r e a t m e n t .
When tensions exist between
two persons, a breakdown in
communication is not the so-
lution. Under such circum-
stances, when couples refuse
to talk for hours or even days,
resentment is likely to grow.
‘At least we stopped fight-
ing,’ they tell themselves.
Still, the issue has not been
resolved, and both remain un-
comfortable.
A wife said, “During the
first year of our marriage,
there were occasions when I
wouldn’t speak to my hus-
band for several days. Usual-
ly, it wasn’t due to big prob-
lems but because of an accu-
mulation of small irritations. I
kept brooding until they be-
came a mountain-like obsta-
cle. Then came the moment
when I could not stand it any
longer, and I would just stop
talking to my husband until
my frustration would pass.”
The wife adds, “My hus-
band and I worked hard at
improving communication so
that problems didn’t build up.
It has not been easy, but after
ten years of married life, I’m
happy to say these periods of
stony silence are much rarer.”
Some spouses use silence
as a form of revenge. Sup-
pose, a husband makes plans
without consulting his wife,
she gets angry and calls him
inconsiderate. He responds by
calling her over-sensitive.
The wife stews in silence and
the husband storms off. They
signal, “You hurt me, so I will
hurt you back.”
Some use the silent treat-
ment to get what they want.A
temporary time-out can give
the opportunity to let emo-
tions cool when an argument
is getting out of hand. That
type of silence is beneficial.
But when it is used as a means
to manipulate, it not only pro-
longs conflict but also erodes
the respect spouses have for
each other.
By not overreacting
to emotionally
charged statements
such as, “You never
listen” “you al-
ways refuse” or
“you are never on
time,” it is best to discern the
intent behind the words.
When angry, a person tends to
exaggerate what he or she
does not mean.
Changing the direction of a
heated discussion by soften-
ing the tone and acknowledg-
ing the other partner’s point of
view are tools one can employ
to diffuse tension. Speaking
gently makes the other person
catch the point faster.
“When my husband gets
upset, he refuses to talk to me
for days. He makes me feel
guilty,” says a wife. Retreat-
ing behind a wall of silence
blocks communication. If this
becomes habitual, marital re-
lations are strained.
A husband noticed that, at
times, what he says makes the
situation worse. “I have come
to realize that winning an ar-
gument is a loss. I find that it
is much more satisfying to
fortify our relationship.”
Ittakestwotoargue.Ifemo-
tions are volatile, it may be
wise to excuse oneself and
walk away for a short while to
cool down. Maybe, one can go
into another room or go for a
walk until one has regained
one’s composure. This is not
stone-walled – that is, being
uncooperative or evasive nei-
ther it is the silent treatment,
where someone refuses to
communicate. Rather, this is a
good time to develop patience
insight and understanding.
“When my wife is upset,
she cries for a long time.
Nothing seems to
work. I feel like
giving up,” said a
husband. Pres-
suring one’s
partner to talk
can make
him/her un-
comfortable.
Some take a
long time to settle their feel-
ings. It is best to talk about
something potentially divi-
sive when both partners are
relaxed. When one begins
speaking, the other can resist
the urge to respond immedi-
ately to prevent an argument.
By discernment and tactful
questions, one can bring out
the thoughts that are deep in
a person’s mind.
When faced with a disa-
greement, one can avoid the
attitude of refusing to talk as
that would convey the wrong
message – ‘I’m not happy,
and I want you to be unhappy
too.’ This approach does not
let the spouse fully under-
stand how the other one feels
or what he/she desires.
One can ask oneself, ‘If I
have been hurt by my part-
ner’s words or actions, can I
overlook the matter?’ If not,
is it wise to play games by
resorting to the silent treat-
ment?
Calmly talking things over
as soon as one can, that very
day, if at all possible, will
soothe emotions. Husbands
and wives who value their re-
lationship, never let pride and
childish silent treatment dam-
age their marriage. Instead,
they make their home a
place of peace.

Amit Shah (Modi Ka Parivar) @AmitShah IN-DEPTH KEJRIWAL’S SILENCE ON SWATI MALIWAL CASE IS INTRIGUING elhi Chief MinisterArvind Kejriwal’s silence in the Swati Maliwal case is baffling. He can- not even cite the Supreme Court’s bail order in defence of his silence as the assault on Maliwal by Kejriwal’s aide Bibhav Kumar is not in its purview. Before Aam Aadmi Party leaders question others’si- lence on key issues they must speak on a serious mat- ter like the safety of women in their own party. Swati Maliwal, a Rajya Sabha member, alleged that she was assaulted by Kejriwal’s aide when she went to the Delhi chief minister’s official residence. Maliwal informed the police about the incident but did not file a written complaint. And that makes the case more intriguing. D SC’S PROTECTIVE SHIELD A RELIEF IN UAPA CASES he Supreme Court’s recent order providing protective shields to the accused under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the UnlawfulActivities PreventionAct come as a relief against the two draconian laws. Or- dering the release of NewsClick’s founderPrabir Pur- kayastha, the Bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sand- eep Mehta mandated that the grounds of arrest must be supplied to the accused in writing in cases under the UAPA. This is an extension of the order passed in Pankaj Bansal case in October 2023 the top court said that the Enforcement Di- rectorate (ED) should furnish the grounds of arrest under the PMLA in writing to an accused at the time of arrest. Both the orders will put a leash on the ED. In the case of Pur- kayastha, the SC found several dis- crepancies in the re- mand order. First, he was arrested on Oc- tober 3, 2023 at 5.45 pm and produced be- fore the remand judge at 6 am the next day without Pu- kayastha’s lawyers being informed. Second, a copy of the FIR was not shared with the accused until the remand order was passed. Third, a post facto note was inserted after the remand was granted. In the court’s view “the entire exercise was done in a clandestine manner and was nothing but a blatant attempt to circumvent the due process of law to con- fine the accused to police custody without informing him of the grounds on which he has been arrested…” The procedural guidelines would, to some extent, prevent the misuse of UAPA and PMLA which are being used rather too frequently these days. T Ordering the release of NewsClick’s founderPrabir Purkayastha, the Bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta mandated that the grounds of arrest must be supplied to the accused in writing in cases under the UAPA PERSPECT VE 04 Jaipur, Friday | May 17, 2024 www.firstindia.co.in firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur thefirstindia thefirstindia thefirstindia ABOUT THE EXISTENCE The nice thing about exist- ence is that it can be relied upon even when you have no idea where it came from. “To be or not to be” is the wrong question. We are, period. Packaged in with being here now is consciousness. In a basic, irrefutable way, exist- ence and consciousness go together. They are our home. We didn’t invent or create this home. It is our beginning and therefore our end, wrapped into one. Except that the words “begin- ning” and “end” are decep- tive. There’s no reason to assume that existence had a beginning. Whatever you imagine as non-existence is a concept, and concepts, being mind-made, exist. Trying to nullify existence becomes circular. We are all at home here and now. We couldn’t be conscious without conscious- ness, the infinite, causeless, invisible, inconceivable origin of everything. Where do we go after we die? Nowhere in physical terms. We never leave home be- cause there’s no alternative. Non-existence is a fantasy born of fear. I realize that making existence the same as consciousness sounds alien. I’ve tried to state the argument in simple state- ments that anyone is free to ponder. The answer has to be personal. You have to look at what life is, here and now, to gain anything like a stable set of conclusions. Explore what it is like to be at home, and you will realize that you can never leave home. A new worldview emerges if you look deep enough. WHEREDOWEGO AFTERWEDIE? ne of the main reasons that any reli- gion or spir- itualtradition existsistoreassureusabout dying. Fear of dying is uni- versalbuthiddenfromview in daily life. Religion and spirituality offer hope that this fear is baseless. Some- thing happens after death— this is the primary mes- sage—andthissomethingis good, or at least it is better than nothing. Despite all of its advanc- es, science has stripped away any reassurances about life after death, and most people in the modern world accept the scientific model. In doing so it logi- cally follows that when the physical body dies, in all likelihood the immaterial aspects of being human— mind soul, memory per- sonality, thoughts, feel- ings, etc.—are extin- guished at the same time. What this set of beliefs doesn’t offer is proof, in the form of facts, data, in- formation, and so on. In place of religious certainty, modern people face death, not only with fear, doubt, dread, and foreboding but without a shred of empiri- cal evidence about what happens after death. The reason that we casually be- lieve that life ends with nothing isn’t because that’s true. Nothing is simply the absence of facts. When facts end, science has noth- ing to say. If you follow this train of thought, both world- views, the religious/spirit- ual and the scientific, amount to stories built around assumptions that can’t be proven. When you ask, “Where do we go after we die?” the two main sto- ries—we go to heaven/hell or we vanish into a cloud of atoms and energy waves—are hollow. They confront a mystery that re- fuses to reveal its secrets. Where this leaves us is really where we begin, with the individual know- ing that death is inevitable but leading a life dedicated to avoiding that fact. Fear of death isn’t necessary. At worst, we go to sleep just as we do every night, and going to sleep isn’t fearful. “I’ll know what happens when it happens” is a good working attitude, but let’s see if there is a better way. A better way is hinted at in T.S. Eliot’s famous line of poetry, “In my end is my beginning.” This isn’t a re- ligious or mystical state- ment, although Eliot was deeply religious. What these words mean is true for everyone, atheists and believers alike. You can’t know how things end until you know how they began. This looks like a simple state- ment of cause and effect. If you observe that putting a jar upside down over a candle makes the flame go out, you cannot explain this until you know the laws of chemistry, which reveals that fire needs oxy- gen to keep going. Use up the oxygen, and the flame goes out. But there’s a deeper meaning to “You can’t know how things end until youknowhowtheybegan.” What really matters about death is the survival of con- sciousness. We observe the flame (the physical body) goout(die),butthemystery revolves around what hap- pens to the non-physical partofourselves.Thethings previously listed— mind soul, memory, personality, thoughts, feelings, etc.—are all experiences in con- sciousness. No matter how unique anyone’s life is, conscious- ness brings every human being together in the same place. Life is experienced in consciousness. There- fore, if we know how con- sciousness begins, we know how it ends. The op- posite is also true. If we don’t know how con- sciousness begins, we can’t possibly know how (or if) it ends. Suddenly there is an opening for a true revela- tion. If consciousness has no beginning, then it has no end. In other words, the cause-and-effect model doesn’t work when it comes to consciousness. It can only be explained as existing on its own, inde- pendent of everything that does obey the rule of cause and effect. Can anything really be outside the realm of cause and effect? Absolutely. The universe sprang from a state preceding the Big Bang that offers no clue about matter, energy, space, or time. Without those things, there is no cause and effect. At the smallest scale of nature, the quantum field creates the physical universe through ripples of poten- tial that emerge as suba- tomic particles and energy waves. There is no cause for this to happen; it just does. Existence has no cause, an obvious fact once you think about it. The New Age phrase, “Be here now,” isn’t a goal. You cannot help but be here now, since that’s the definition of existence. There are more controver- sial examples of things that have no cause. Many of your thoughts aren’t caused by the thoughts that preceded them. Thoughts spring up unpredictably from a state that isn’t a thought. It is a silent do- main of possibilities. Here we are at the crux of the answer. If you don’t know how thoughts arise from total silence, you can’t possibly know how or if thoughts end. You already rely on the domain of silent, invisible possibilities all the time. You fetch memories from this domain, along with your vocabulary, your next desire, and your iden- tity, which is nothing more than a constant process of filing away the experiences you identify with, calling them “me.” THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL Despite all of its advances, science has stripped away any reassurances about life after death, and most people in the modern world accept the scientific model. In doing so it logically follows that when the physical body dies, in all likelihood the immaterial aspects of being human—mind soul, memory personality, thoughts, feelings, etc.—are extinguished at the same time O Deepak Chopra The writer is MD, FACP, FRCP founder of the Chopra Foundation, a non-profit entity for research on well-being and humanitarianism, and Chopra Global l Vol 5 l Issue No. 340 l RNI NO. But the numbers are still not reflective of the size of the growing popu- lation,” Harris, the first- ever Indian American, African American, and a woman to be elected as the vice president of the US, told a packed room of Indian Americans in the national capital. PM MODI IS CHANGING THE IMAGE OF INDIA AND INDIANS: INDIAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY LEADER Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi in last 10 years of his rule has changed the image of India abroad and has emerged as a true global leader, an eminent Indian-American community leader has said. Modi Ji is changing the image of Indians not just in India but in the world. He is now considered a global leader... I do believe Modi is reviving Indian pride, Indian culture, and an- cient Indian knowledge of yoga, mindfulness and Ayurveda, Dr Bindukumar Kansupada, an Indian-American cardiolo- gist from Philadelphia, said. What Modi has done, from my perspective, first in education, when I went to med school, there were only four medical schools in Mumbai. Now in In- dia, we have more than 700 medical schools. Every district has a medical school. There were only five IITs, if I recall, in 1970 in India. Now we have, I believe 23 IITs, he said, adding that he has visited India multiple times in the recent past. Growth is enormous. Confidence level is enormous among Indian youth. Tourism, what you call Tirth (religious) tourism has developed. There are more airports than ever I have seen in India. Happiness index is improving. People are more self-sufficient and I think people are proud to be Indians, said the Indian-American doctor. The 34,000 capacity makeshift stadium at Eisenhower Park was officially launched by legendary sprinter Usain Bolt on Wednesday. How intense the past few days have been! You could spend months just reflecting on these recent experiences. But the mood isn’t conducive to introspection right now. A change of temper today encourages you to share your life more generously. But with whom will you share it? That may well be the question of the day. NUSHRRATT BHARUCCHA Taurus MAY 17 Lucky Number: 7 Lucky Colour: Pink nger can cause one to give the person who an- noys the silent t r e a t m e n t . When tensions exist between two persons, a breakdown in communication is not the so- lution. Under such circum- stances, when couples refuse to talk for hours or even days, resentment is likely to grow. ‘At least we stopped fight- ing,’ they tell themselves. Still, the issue has not been resolved, and both remain un- comfortable. A wife said, “During the first year of our marriage, there were occasions when I wouldn’t speak to my hus- band for several days. Usual- ly, it wasn’t due to big prob- lems but because of an accu- mulation of small irritations. I kept brooding until they be- came a mountain-like obsta- cle. Then came the moment when I could not stand it any longer, and I would just stop talking to my husband until my frustration would pass.” The wife adds, “My hus- band and I worked hard at improving communication so that problems didn’t build up. It has not been easy, but after ten years of married life, I’m happy to say these periods of stony silence are much rarer.” Some spouses use silence as a form of revenge. Sup- pose, a husband makes plans without consulting his wife, she gets angry and calls him inconsiderate. He responds by calling her over-sensitive. The wife stews in silence and the husband storms off. They signal, “You hurt me, so I will hurt you back.” Some use the silent treat- ment to get what they want.A temporary time-out can give the opportunity to let emo- tions cool when an argument is getting out of hand. That type of silence is beneficial. But when it is used as a means to manipulate, it not only pro- longs conflict but also erodes the respect spouses have for each other. By not overreacting to emotionally charged statements such as, “You never listen” “you al- ways refuse” or “you are never on time,” it is best to discern the intent behind the words. When angry, a person tends to exaggerate what he or she does not mean. Changing the direction of a heated discussion by soften- ing the tone and acknowledg- ing the other partner’s point of view are tools one can employ to diffuse tension. Speaking gently makes the other person catch the point faster. “When my husband gets upset, he refuses to talk to me for days. He makes me feel guilty,” says a wife. Retreat- ing behind a wall of silence blocks communication. If this becomes habitual, marital re- lations are strained. A husband noticed that, at times, what he says makes the situation worse. “I have come to realize that winning an ar- gument is a loss. I find that it is much more satisfying to fortify our relationship.” Ittakestwotoargue.Ifemo- tions are volatile, it may be wise to excuse oneself and walk away for a short while to cool down. Maybe, one can go into another room or go for a walk until one has regained one’s composure. This is not stone-walled – that is, being uncooperative or evasive nei- ther it is the silent treatment, where someone refuses to communicate. Rather, this is a good time to develop patience insight and understanding. “When my wife is upset, she cries for a long time. Nothing seems to work. I feel like giving up,” said a husband. Pres- suring one’s partner to talk can make him/her un- comfortable. Some take a long time to settle their feel- ings. It is best to talk about something potentially divi- sive when both partners are relaxed. When one begins speaking, the other can resist the urge to respond immedi- ately to prevent an argument. By discernment and tactful questions, one can bring out the thoughts that are deep in a person’s mind. When faced with a disa- greement, one can avoid the attitude of refusing to talk as that would convey the wrong message – ‘I’m not happy, and I want you to be unhappy too.’ This approach does not let the spouse fully under- stand how the other one feels or what he/she desires. One can ask oneself, ‘If I have been hurt by my part- ner’s words or actions, can I overlook the matter?’ If not, is it wise to play games by resorting to the silent treat- ment? Calmly talking things over as soon as one can, that very day, if at all possible, will soothe emotions. Husbands and wives who value their re- lationship, never let pride and childish silent treatment dam- age their marriage. Instead, they make their home a place of peace.
