Olga Beregovaya, CEO Americas, PROMT PROMT's approach to engine hybridization differs from many other companies’ technology, using statistical methods on every stage of translation process: pre-editing, transfer and post-editing. The hybrid engine defines syntactic, lexical and grammar choices on an “atomic” level, rather than processing complete translated sentences. Pilot case examples will be used to demonstrate the robustness of advances.

Are you responsible for developing satellite on-board software? Are you the Dutch government and you have to efficiently implement the public benefits law? Are you a healthcare startup, developing companion apps that help patients through a treatment? Are you an insurance company struggling to create new, and evolve existing products quickly to keep up with the market? These are all examples of organisations who have built their own domain-specific programming language to streamline the development of applications that have a non-trivial algorithmic core. All have built their languages with Jetbrains MPS, an open source language development tool optimized for ecosystems of collaborating languages with mixed graphical, textual, tabular and mathematical notations. This talk has four parts. I start by motivating the need for DSLs based on real-world examples, including the ones above. I will then present a few high-level design practices that guide our language development work. Third, I will develop a simple language extension to give you a feel for how MPS works. And finally, I will point you to things you can read to get you started with your own language development practice.

Towards Universal Language Understanding

Slides for talk given at Women in Engineering on March 20, 2021. Abstract: Natural language understanding is a fundamental task in artificial intelligence. English understanding has reached a mature state and successfully deployed in multiple IBM AI products and services, such as Watson Natural Language Understanding and Watson Discovery. However, scaling existing products/services to support additional languages remain an open challenge. In this talk, we will discuss the open challenges in supporting universal natural language understanding. We will share our work in the past few years in addressing these challenges. We will also showcase how universal semantic representation of natural languages can enable cross-lingual information extraction in concrete domains (e.g. compliance) and show ongoing efforts towards seamless scaling existing NLP capabilities across languages with minimal efforts.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the font-water. On September 14th, representatives from Microsoft, Adobe, Apple and Google made a joint font announcement in Warsaw: OpenType 1.8 was unveiled, featuring variable fonts, a.k.a. OpenType Font Variations, based on an all-but forgotten Apple technology, GX Variations. Variable fonts enable type designers to create fonts that have one or more design axes, such as weight or width. Use of a design axis frees designers; for example, if there is a weight axis, a designer is free to choose any arbitrary weight within the font's design space, not just a few pre-set weights. Many type designers have long used such technology for font design, so there is a backlog of existing typefaces that could be adapted to this technology. But two previous axis-fonts technologies did not take off: Apple's GX/AAT Typography allowed it, and Adobe's Multiple Master did as well. Why should this be different? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Thomas Phinney is President of FontLab, the font software tools company. Previously he was product manager for fonts and global typography at Adobe, and then senior product manager for Extensis. In the 2000s he was instrumental in driving the adoption of OpenType, both within Adobe and in the marketplace.

It basically lets the language providers implement the protocol as a server, and the IDEs consume the protocol as a client to have the IDEs presenting the language-specific data without having to know about the language. This protocol already has multiple successful stories. In this talk we’ll demonstrate: * How a C# language server can be used in Eclipse IDE (thanks to LSP4E) to provide rich C# edition capabilities * How a Java language server implemented on top of JDT is integrated into VSCode to have VSCode supporting rich Java edition capabilities * How you can easily write a language server in Java (with LSP4J) and plug it into Eclipse IDE (with LSP4E) and VSCode and demonstrate how easy it becomes to ship additional features for your language in all tools at once.
