The document describes a computer-aided translation and interpretation training system called CATS. It provides course management, multi-lingual resource centers, and translation management platforms to support online translation and interpretation courses. CATS allows instructors to upload multimedia content and documents, create translation cases and assignments, and evaluate student work. It aims to improve over traditional methods of collecting assignments through email by offering an integrated online platform for pre-class, in-class, and post-class activities.
We often feel stuck due to a lack of inspiration to take action, the drive to keep going, and keep up the zeal we began with. While we are constantly battling between distractions and staying focused on the job at hand.
What drives you in life- Is it your fear of failure or the high that comes with succeeding at something?
What fuels your motivation when you run out of it?
When was the last time you felt so inspired that you were compelled to take action?
In this PPT, I show you how to stay inspired the right way.

Reframing Our Narratives: Advocacy and Action in Critical Timeschar booth
Advocacy and outreach are essential tools for creating and sustaining successful libraries, and in increasingly resource-strapped environments it is vital for libraries and librarians to effectively communicate our value. Advocacy is a process of identifying and shaping narratives that matter (and make sense) to our user communities, while outreach helps these ideas connect with stakeholders. When we “reframe” our outreach and advocacy narratives we acknowledge that libraries are dynamic, but that our core values of justice, access, and an informed and supported user population remain constant. Making this case can provide the foundation for creative advocacy strategies that help us build strong and lasting institutions.
Dedicated practicing of coding is something which often gets lost in the fast paced world of tech. In this talk I am describing how practicing is something developers can do and how we can learn from musicians and sportsmen.
For the language service industry, the biggest challenge is still, regardless if it’s for conventional language service mode or cloud-based service mode, translator resources. Using technology to help us map out the most suitable translators for each project is the key to ensure the high translation quality.

As contents published on the Internet are becoming more and more dominated by videos, requirements on the language translation have also changed. Specifically, video publishers and distributors have a significant interest in balancing both the translation time and the accuracy. To this end, Pactera has invested in solutions, which leverage machine translation to reduce the overall translation time, and recruit human translators to improve the accuracy in a Wikipedia-like fashion. At Pactera, we aim to help video contents to reach billions of people that were not possible before.

Computer assisted translation tools don't exist in a vacuum; they are the product of an increasing productivity gap in an ever more diversified market place. This presentation looks into some pertinent background and more theory-oriented factors. This presentation was part of the NITA Spring 2010 Symposium: Tools for Translators.
Because eLearning videos are long by nature, it's very expensive to use the traditional method of voice-over which require time-consuming work of audio/video editing. VideoLocalize is a localization platform that uses a Karaoke style voice-over method to eliminate the need for that costly audio/video editing. George Zhao (Boffin Language)
Data, monolingual and bilingual, are essential to our industry. So, what do you do when you need more? Come and discover Bicrawler, a modern web-based tool to get high-quality parallel corpora from the Internet.
Quality standards in the industry have come a long way. They have evolved over the years, but their focus on quality definitions based on errors and metrics has remained the accepted wisdom. Expectations of end users are changing. Every piece of content has a job to do, and it is often to touch the heart of users rather than just the mind by delivering information that is accurate and whose quality is measurable. A new “quality evaluation paradigm” is emerging. This calls for a new profile for translators, one that is different from what has been typical for the past few decades. This presentation will look at this trend in more detail, considering how to test these new types of translators fast and effectively. What matters in this emerging quality model and what does it possibly mean for DQF?
Review processes as the last step in quality assurance workflows are “notorious for causing delays and frustrations”. The reason normally is a flawed process: Many manual steps for the PMs, the lack of intuitive, layout-oriented collaboration software, plus the expectation of review to “fix a broken translation” in the last second rather than giving strategic process input. globalReview shifts this paradigm: As an integrated, collaborative platform with full layout editing it provides a positive review experience. At the same time, it pushes quality upstream applying DQF principles: Flexible content profiles define precise quality expectations; issue categories and scoring effectively gauge and also track translation quality over time; a sampling module allows for fast yet accurate quality evaluation. Put together, this allows the customer to raise the process from painful review to strategic quality management and gain valuable business intelligence.
Chris Wendt, Group Program Manager-MT, Microsoft Research
Chris will outline factors influencing the translation quality of a statistical machine translation system, providing a short description of the feedback collection mechanism in use at Microsoft, and the metrics on observed on its MT deployments. Chris will provide examples from the Microsoft Developer Network blogs and documentation, and the customer support information to present the Microsoft view that more data equals better machine translation.
Most of LSPs have not converted the translated bilingual documents to TM till now. Even the LSPs have established TMs, they are also confronted with disordered management of TMs and low efficiency. This report will share the way of quick TM establishment with Tmxmall Cloud-Based Smart Aligner, the way of Management of large-scale TMs with Private Cloud-Based TM for achieving pre-translation with large-scale TMs and team cooperation and etc.. Besides, the report will introduce Tmxmall TM marketplace, which is expected to promote TM sharing. Finally, we will share the experience of LSPs on alignment and Private Cloud-Based TM management for reducing translation costs and increasing profits.
This is a presentation about the introduction to system and analysis design. The topic talks about what are the system development life cycle and how it works. It also talks about the professions or the team conducting a study.

Similar to The Theory and Practice of Computer Aided Translation Training System, Liu Qiang (Beijing WeTrans Technology) (20)
A global P2P Trading Platform for TMs will be introduced. Tmxmall TM marketplace is the core, and client TM software and CATs are the input and output respectively. User of CATs is able to search the TMs of client users while it does not require client users to upload TMs to the cloud.
The presentation will introduce the NLP technologies used in Shiyibao and the main product features, covering the following points:
Function of giving automatic grades for translations based on translation quality automatic evaluation algorithm;
Function of giving automatic comments based on rules matching;
Function of sorting translations according to their similarity or some specific fragments to dramatically improve the efficiency of reviewing and commenting on translations.
In today’s digital economy, content is becoming smaller, more fragmented, and in need of on-demand translation in minutes and around the clock. Traditional localization models are no longer sufficient in meeting these always-on, agile, fast, and small translation requirements of the digital age. This is why mobile translation services like Stepes that are able to deliver quality, speed, and scalability are poised to see tremendous growth. During this 6-minute presentation, Stepes will demonstrate live its instant human translation service for micro content. Powered by human translators from around the world, Stepes is the world’s first mobile translation ecosystem delivering quality translation services using a networking model similar to Uber and Lyft.
Quality evaluation is a costly task in the translation sector. It can take up more than 20% of the time spent on the actual translation production. Quality reporting is costly too. It is still a highly manual task, for most of us at least. And what’s worse, we find it hard to assure and deliver the quality that our customers and end-users need and want. In short, quality evaluation in the translation industry is failing.
Our industry lacks a concerted effort for standardizing APIs. While many efforts have been made, none of them have really lead to widely accepted standards for such diverse topics as interchange of project and workflow data, passing data from one tool to the next, making technologies and data interoperable. GALA has launched a community effort to define and prioritize API use cases and jointly develop concrete standards which can be implemented by tools providers, LSPs and clients alike. Hear the current status and join the movement!
Algorithmic management is the secret behind innovative translation platforms that automate and track every task and tell us what to do. Datafication is the biggest trend of translation in the coming year(s). Everyone will have his or her own dashboard and we are dialing ourselves into the age of robots and singularity. “How long will it take before my customers find out?”
Panelists: Dace Dzeguze (TAUS), Daniel Sullivan (Tableau Software), Greg Perkins (LDS Church), John Weisgerber (XTM)
The TAUS Quality Dashboard and DQF Tools enables users to monitor productivity and efficiency in translation projects. Users can track their own productivity and quality, conduct evaluations and benchmark the results against industry averages. The tools help establish return-on-investment and benchmark performance enabling users to take informed decisions. To ensure evaluation results are reliable, it is vital that best practices are applied. The aim of this session is to discuss best practices on using TAUS DQF and to analyze different use cases.
Panelists: Yoshiyasu Yamakawa (Intel), JP Barraza (Systran), Konstantin Dranch (Memsource), David Koot (TAUS)
The focus of this session will be on predictions and risk management. What kind of things can you predict and how can you manage risks by by analyzing your translation data or monitoring your productivity and quality. Tracking translation data in different cycles of the translation process (translation, post-editing, review, proof-reading) offers tremendous value when it comes to predicting future trends or making informed choices. What type of data can be valuable and what kind of predictions can we make using this data? How can we make more efficient use of already available data? How can we use this type of data to improve machine translation, automatic QA, error-recognition, sampling or quality estimation? How can academia and industry work together towards a common goal?

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. First let me briefly introduce myself. My name is Liu Qiang and I'm the technical director of Beijing WeTrans Technology Co.,Ltd. I'll introduce you a computer aided translation and interpretation teaching &
training system, or shortly CATS.
Although Multimedia Technology had been widely use in Modern Classes. It has been decade that most teachers never try new educational tools and communication methods other than PowerPoint slides and email.
Professors usually collects students' assignments through e-mail attachments with zip format and should be able to view the content by uncompress them.
To make a translation case for class use or to do students’assignment checking professors and student always turned to Microsoft Word as their first choice. Though it is quite a easy choice, It has many disadvantages: It is inefficiency, and sometimes it is a chaos, mostly it is nearly impossible for statistic analysis.
The traditional way of interpretation practice is that a teacher or a companion conrols PLAY and PAUSE function of a media player on a computer manually for the praticer and then exchange the role. Such procudure is quite boring the time wasting.
We built a Computer Aided Translation and Interpretation Training System for Teaching, Trainig, Testing and Researching just solving those problems.
Our system contains a course management platform, a multi-lingual resource center, and a translation management platform with CAT tools support on top of several backend service as documentation service, automatic evaluation service and remote interactive teaching & study service.
On our course management platform, teacher (professors) can divide a course into Pre-Class, In-Class and Post-Class Sections, in which they can logically organize there course content, put some preview reference materials such as videos, links etc. , choose a translation case from our multi-lingual resource center, upload their own documentations, slides, and put some assignments, group work, or discuss for homework and much more.
Multimedia content can be viewed directly on our platform and powerpoint slides can be played on our platform without downloading and opening it in MS software.
We support many translation assignments such as tranlation work, interpretation, translation work peerreview, even for a writing and writing peerreview.
Our multi-lingual resource center has a large quantity of translation cases library in 30+ languages and still being filled with newly admitted real business cases and automatically crawlered and classified multi-lingual articles.
Here is an example of our recourse center automatically align a Chinese article and it's Japanese translation sentence by sentence.
Translation cases show like this in our platform. A notation can be made and viewed with it's origin and translation marked together.
In our annotation system, you can choose mulitple words, phrase or sentences of both orignal and translation and make just one note.
We have some online cat functionalities such as an online dictionary, automatic term recognition ( base on our terminolgoy mangaement modules ), and even a speech to text assistant if you are too lazy too type anything.
For interpretation practice, our multi-lingual multimedia resource center provide a standard interpretion learning library with scientfic classificaion in many perspectives such as domains, scenes, difficulties, languages and even time and accent which based on teaching program.
Here is a breif animated picture of how we built our interpretation resources. It's like a subtitle editor but it has more specific functionalities: features like choice for language, speaker, original text, translation text, annotation and overall explantation.
Some of the information needed for an interpretation teaching case can be processed automatically by our backend programs.
Theses pictures show how you can do interpretation practice on our system for consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting and sight interpreting.
All the practice procedure is controlled automatically by program. It knows when to stop, when to play and when to record.
We also support interpretation note taking with HD precison by integretion of a note taking hardware.
Assignment checking can be done mannully and automatically. Mannul annotation and automatic annoation are marked in different colors and teachers can confirm or discard a automatic annotation as wish or just turn off all automatic annoations.
To check a paragraph's translation of all participants, we support similar translation searching and annotation which can save quite a amount of teachers time.
Our evaluation service has multi-lingual support, that is our algorithm is language independent. We also support statistic analysis for one assignment and an assignment of all paticipants.
Students can do peer-review of their translation work and writing exercise on our system.
For cheking of interpretation assignment, teachers can mark a point on the recording and record or typing a comment.
Our system also support automatic evaluation of an interpretation work to some extent.
For archiving and research requirements, our system can also export a course's outline (in docx or pptx format), a single translation assignment with notation(in docx format with comments) and a translation assigment of all paticipants ( in xlsx format).
Till now we have many university customers across China. Some of which are the top Language Universities in China, such as Beijing Foreign Studies University and Beijing Language and Culture University and we cooperate with them both in teaching, researching and develoing domains.
We hope in the nearly future our system could spread worldwide so many more teachers and students will benifit from it.
