Project proposal title and date:
Me and my Vocation
Main area of activity:
It will be a short documentary film, between 5 – 10 minutes in length.
Rationale:
Over the past two years I have made multiple short films including a short documentary
and an advertisement for a client. Creating these projects has provided me with so many
filmmaking and analytical skills, which are so necessary for the production of my
documentary. I have learnt how to effectively film and record footage using our cameras,
tripods and sound recorders so that I can tell a story using not only the words spoken, but
through mis-en-scene techniques like lighting, angles, props and colours. Knowing how to
do all of these things means that I can effectively create a product that makes the
audience feel a certain way. I’ve also learnt how to properly edit on Photoshop and
PremierPro and how to correctly reflect on and analyse my work so that I can constantly
improve for my skills for current and future projects. I recently made a short documentary
where I interviewed some Catholic nuns/sisters to see how their lives and work have
changed over time and what it is that they do now. I think that this production was very
successful and it certainly taught me a lot about documentary production, as previous to
this I had never done something factual. It has made me understand what things I will
need to change and how to successfully film a documentary so I can make it feel
professional and interesting.
Project Concept:
The concept of my product is a short documentary looking at figures in the Catholic
Church and their reasoning as to why they followed the career path they took. It will
contain talking head interviews, voiceovers and most likely someone speaking into the
camera. I will hopefully be interviewing a priest, a couple of sisters/nuns, and a Catholic
teacher from a Roman Catholic school. The documentary will look at why these people
decided to follow a vocation/career in the church, dedicating their lives to God, rather than
following a ‘normal’ path and having their religious life separate to their work life. It will be
between 5 to 10 minutes in length and will mainly contain new footage I have recorded
and a small amount of graphics and a few old archive photographs. I will need to conduct
a lot of secondary research into the career paths that each of these people have taken so
that I am educated on how long it took for them to get the jobs that they now have and
how much of a sacrifice that was. I will also be conducting primary and secondary
research into what people find interesting about documentaries so that mine isn’t boring
and that viewers connect with and like it. I will be doing a questionnaire to find out the
specific likes and dislikes and to create the exact audience that I will aim my product at
however they will be in the age range of 18-30 both male and female and will most likely
be users of online streaming platforms such as Netflix. I am making this documentary to
educate the public on a topic that they may not know much or anything about.

How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
I will be evaluating my work in multiple different ways, in both a weekly self-reflection and
a final evaluation after the project has been completed. The final evaluation will be in
much more depth, analysing the whole way it was created and how it has affected the
end product that I make. I will evaluate every aspect of it thoroughly to decide how well it
all went and if it was successful and professional enough or not, this will help me to make
it better and to improve any future projects that I make. I will also be showing it to my
peers and their advice may help me to evaluate it more as they will most likely have
different opinions and views on the finished product than I do. This will help me to make
positive changes and create a better product and to increase my knowledge for future
work. I will also evaluate it each week in my weekly reflection where I discuss what has
gone well and why I have done it. This will help me to work out what I need to keep doing
and what I should change in my work and for the following weeks to keep on track and
make a successful product. I will also keep a note each time I complete a section of my
work, so that I don’t forget anything that I need to change and so that I can effectively
improve my work so that it is as good and professional as possible.
