OBJECTIVES
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able
to;
1. Define a home.
2. Define an ideal home.
3. List the components of an ideal home.
4. Explain the factors to consider when choosing
where to construct an ideal home.
5. Describe the dangers associated with poor
homestead.
Definition
A home is a definite place to live in.
An ideal home is a well designed functional
house along with its components .
It is also defined as a home that is
designed with all its components that meet
the imaginary standards of excellence, fit
for a model, faultless/ perfect as ideal
beauty.
Components of an ideal homestead
Main house:
Large enough depending on the number of
members in the family and finance available.
for living, dining and sleeping purposes.
Well ventilated (doors, windows and vents)
Leak proof roofs.

 Smooth walls and height not less than 7 1/2 ft
 Separate rooms for sleeping (males and females)
particularly children 7yrs and above.
 Floor: spacious, smooth and dust free
 Verandah: large enough for resting
 Furniture
Kitchen.
Should be spacious.
Well ventilated with through and cross ventilation.
Roof leak proof.
Smooth walls of the right height.
Smooth floor.
Raised fire place with a chimney .
Provide apron to prevent soaking water to wall
surface.
Raised fire place like our kitchen of HTC
Latrine.
At least 10m from main house,30m from source of
water.
Roof leak proof, smooth walls, well ventilated,
spacious, smooth floor, squat hole cover if not VIP,
clean surrounding, well drained and must have a door.
Anal cleansing material such as toilet papers.

Must be raised and well maintained.
Two compartments one for sauce pans and clean utensils.
Provide soak pit for waste water.

o Prevents /reduces accidents and injuries.
o Reduces crimes as they may not be
easily accessible to robbers, rapists.
o Reduces psychological and social stress.
o Protection of population from poisoning
and special risks.
o Reduction of excessive noise.
EFFECTS OF UN IDEAL HOMESTEAD
 Dusty environments can cause respiratory tract
infections.
 Transmission of diseases like malaria, dysentery if
surrounding is not kept clean & well drained.
 Air borne diseases like tuberculosis, meningitis.
 Possibility of accidents if close to roads or in case
of collapsed walls.
 Environment pollution if located near sewage
plants or lagoons, refuse heaps.

 Destruction to food and other requirements in
the room in case of leaking roofs.
 Contamination of water sources if latrines are
not properly located and maintained.
 Transmission of zoonotic diseases such as
plague, rabies.
 Immoral behaviors can be learnt by children if
the parents and children sleep in the same
house and room.
CONCLUSION
For a nation to grow and develop, there
is need to have an ideal home to reduce
/ prevent some common diseases
especially communicable diseases.

  • 2. OBJECTIVES By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to; 1. Define a home. 2. Define an ideal home. 3. List the components of an ideal home. 4. Explain the factors to consider when choosing where to construct an ideal home. 5. Describe the dangers associated with poor homestead.
  • 3. Definition A home is a definite place to live in. An ideal home is a well designed functional house along with its components . It is also defined as a home that is designed with all its components that meet the imaginary standards of excellence, fit for a model, faultless/ perfect as ideal beauty.
  • 4. Components of an ideal homestead Main house: Large enough depending on the number of members in the family and finance available. for living, dining and sleeping purposes. Well ventilated (doors, windows and vents) Leak proof roofs.

  • 24. Factors to consider when constructing an ideal home  Site.  Purpose.  Financial factors.  Means of transport.  Availability of services.  Nature of soil. Market.  Topography.  Presence of water source. Number of occupants. Materials to used.
  • 25. Importance of an ideal homestead in public health oProvides protection against the physical elements that may have direct and indirect effect on health. o Comfortable and secure for families to enjoy. oImproved housing reduces risk of communicable diseases. oSafeguards against fire hazards.

Importance of an ideal homestead ….2… o Prevents /reduces accidents and injuries. o Reduces crimes as they may not be easily accessible to robbers, rapists. o Reduces psychological and social stress. o Protection of population from poisoning and special risks. o Reduction of excessive noise.

EFFECTS OF UN IDEAL HOMESTEAD  Dusty environments can cause respiratory tract infections.  Transmission of diseases like malaria, dysentery if surrounding is not kept clean & well drained.  Air borne diseases like tuberculosis, meningitis.  Possibility of accidents if close to roads or in case of collapsed walls.  Environment pollution if located near sewage plants or lagoons, refuse heaps.

Effects of un ideal homestead …2…  Destruction to food and other requirements in the room in case of leaking roofs.  Contamination of water sources if latrines are not properly located and maintained.  Transmission of zoonotic diseases such as plague, rabies.  Immoral behaviors can be learnt by children if the parents and children sleep in the same house and room.
  • 29. CONCLUSION For a nation to grow and develop, there is need to have an ideal home to reduce / prevent some common diseases especially communicable diseases.
