2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

It is fascinating to visit USA for studies. Incredible social
atmosphere, a chance to experience the world’s finest university
system and cutting edge technology make USA the most favorable
destination for international students.
But some obstacles naturally arise when you move to a foreign
land. Let us discuss those and tell you how to deal with the
common problems faced by international students in USA.
3. 1. Mastering The Common Language (English)
For more information , visit :
https://myassignmenthelp.com/blog/12-common-problems-faced-by-international-students-in-usa/
If you have a difficulty in speaking and understanding English
language or maybe the accent, it becomes challenging to live in a
country like USA where 80 percent of the population speak
English.
So learn the daily usage of English language before you visit the
host country (U.S.). Even after landing, you must not feel
embarrassed. It is important to tell someone about the
difficulties you are facing and take help from them to master the
language.
4. 2. Making New Friends
For more information , visit :
https://myassignmenthelp.com/blog/12-common-problems-faced-by-international-students-in-usa/
International students expect American students to make the
first move. But this does not happen all the time. It becomes
worse if you are an introvert by nature.
Make yourself approachable to natives, open yourself slowly and
steadily, and remember not to make any weird or awkward
gestures. Always remain true to yourself. When you befriend the
right lot, your experience in US becomes all the more enjoyable.
5. 3. Battling Homesickness
For more information , visit :
https://myassignmenthelp.com/blog/12-common-problems-faced-by-international-students-in-usa/
You have to mix with the locals whether you want it or not, and it
becomes a problem when someone asks you to describe your
home country. It leads to homesickness.
Remember the reason for leaving your home country in the first
place. This will give you the needed encouragement to overcome
homesickness. You can also talk to other international students
who are experiencing the same.
6. 4. Hands-On Approach of the Professors
For more information , visit :
https://myassignmenthelp.com/blog/12-common-problems-faced-by-international-students-in-usa/
If have a hands-off approach or the habit of nodding head
without understanding in class, you will find the American
professors’ approach a bit unnerving. The reason is they
believe in an interactive session: professors ask students to
react and speak on the topic.
Try to be active and engaging in the class. Do not just agree to
what the professors say during the lectures. Do not feel shy to
clear your doubt or ask for an answer from your professor.
7. 5. Buffet Food Culture
For more information , visit :
https://myassignmenthelp.com/blog/12-common-problems-faced-by-international-students-in-usa/
Due to the buffet food culture at US university cafeterias, 65% of
the students gain excess weight during the initial few weeks of
their visit. Unlimited food on the table allures the students to eat
big, resulting in imbalance in their diet.
You need to restrict your appetite to eating only healthy food if
you don’t want to put on few unwanted extra pounds. Visit the
nutritionist on campus to receive professional advice.
8. 6. New Kind of Sports
For more information , visit :
https://myassignmenthelp.com/blog/12-common-problems-faced-by-international-students-in-usa/
American culture promotes a good variety of sports with
Basketball, Baseball, Ice Hockey and American Football being on
top of the list. If you are not familiar with these sports, you would
be in for quite a surprise.
Join a local sports team or university team (if you are an athlete).
You can also try your hands in lawn tennis and other racquet
sports, which are quite popular in USA. This opens a gateway to
making new local friends and keeps you healthy and fit. Moreover,
it will help you in building your personality.
9. 7. Culture Change and Festive Periods
For more information , visit :
https://myassignmenthelp.com/blog/12-common-problems-faced-by-international-students-in-usa/
When you enter a new country, you naturally become a part of its
culture and festivals. You have been celebrating your own set of
festivals and holiday periods in your home country, now you need
to observe the new set of festivals and holiday periods of the
host country.
Take this as an opportunity to get a memorable experience of the
American culture. Participate in these celebrations, so that you
get first-hand account to share with your friends and family back
at home.
10. 8. Financial Crunch
For more information , visit :
https://myassignmenthelp.com/blog/12-common-problems-faced-by-international-students-in-usa/
Due to growing value of U.S. Dollar, students coming from weaker
economy face many financial problems in USA. They are left with
little money or no money at the end of the month because the
cost of living index is high in USA.
Take up a side job or part-time job, work for few hours after your
classes in local restaurants and international food joints like
McDonald’s. These companies give you around $8-10 for an hour,
which is a decent pay if you work for few hours a day. This will help
you meet everyday expenses.
11. 9. New Subjects and Electives
For more information , visit :
https://myassignmenthelp.com/blog/12-common-problems-faced-by-international-students-in-usa/
Due to the huge difference between two educational systems,
international students who are already adapted to an
educational system, find it challenging to absorb the USA
education system. But fortunately, education system in America
gives you more exposure than any other country in the world.
If you are interested in pursuing a career in finance, but you also
possess some good skills in writing, you can have both the
subject in a combination no matter how contradictory they
seem. USA education system offers you a limitless opportunity to
learn.
12. 10. Research Papers and Other Assignments
For more information , visit :
https://myassignmenthelp.com/blog/12-common-problems-faced-by-international-students-in-usa/
Owing to unfamiliarity with the academic assignment, students
coming from different countries struggle to conduct the required
research and apply the gathered research material in writing.
Visit University Writing Center whenever you counter a problem
with academic writing. Take the advantage of free tutoring services
on how to develop different types of academic papers. Consult
with your professors regarding academic writing as they know
international students usually face problems of this kind.
13. 11. Getting Used to the Climate
For more information , visit :
https://myassignmenthelp.com/blog/12-common-problems-faced-by-international-students-in-usa/
Students coming from different climatic regions will have to
undergo a tough transition when entering a foreign country. There
will be adaptability issues because USA climate varies at different
places. If you are choosing a university placed in the dry western
region, you need to experience a lot of heat in the summer and
cold in the winter.
Do not let this adaptability issue come in your way. Stay focused
on the goal and eventually you will adapt to the climate.
14. 12. Not Being Able to Communicate with
Family because of Time Zone Difference
For more information , visit :
https://myassignmenthelp.com/blog/12-common-problems-faced-by-international-students-in-usa/
Students coming from different time zones counter
communication gap with their family and friends. They barely get
time to talk to each other if it’s morning in USA and night in their
home country.
Fix a time that is feasible to both the parties. Make the call on
Friday and Saturday night when you don’t have classes next
morning. Decide on the time for making the call and alter it
according to your feasibility.
