The photonics industry is going through a transformation due to the maturity of the technologies and the fact that the implementation of these mature technologies is economically viable. Presentation to Education Coordinator (EC) Training with 60 ECs from across the country. Focus on careers and enterprise activities, as well as employer engagement with education.
I just had the opportunity of presenting at the inaugural 'World Congress on Access to Post-Secondary Education' in Montreal. It was my first attempt at a synthesis of four projects that the Pearson Think Tank is involved in; on rising tuition fees, school-based careers guidance, university admissions and open education data. In different ways all of these projects explore the 'wicked problem' (complex, evolving and interdependent) of fair access to higher education.
The work highlights three of the common barriers that restrict fair access to higher education;
1) Information asymmetry
2) Unequal distribution of resources
3) Variable and sometimes unequal access
As well as three potential solutions that have been developed over the course of the projects:
1) Deliver truly personalised information and support
2) Develop sustainable local learning ecosystems
3) Make appropriate use of open data
This is an emerging strand of thinking so please do share your feedback.
This is a slowly evolving presentation I'm working on that attempts to explore future trends for higher education. The first half uses secondary data and charts to explore issues such as demography and development. The second half then looks at some responses by the sector with suggestions for considerations in the future. It is based on my experience with the Blue Skies project (http://pearsonblueskies.com/) editing over 60 articles by leading authors from around the world - each sharing their vision of the future for HE. Please get in touch if you'd like to contribute as it is an ongoing project. Comments and shares both appreciated.

Skills Development Scotland (SDS) has launched the country’s first comprehensive report looking at the statistics, issues and trends that will shape future skills planning and delivery.
The Office for Life Sciences (OLS) in partnership with Innovate UK is working to support developers of innovative medical devices, diagnostics and regulated digital health products to evaluate their products in a real-world clinical setting. Funding is being made available through a series of competitions that will run over the next 2 years. The first round of the competition was run in early 2018.
The second round of the competition ‘Support for SMEs to evaluate innovative medical technologies competition’ opened on 2 July. Up to £1.5m funding is available to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) generate an evidence base that will enable the evaluation of products that address priorities areas for NHS England. ISCF Driving the Electric Revolution - Building Regional Centres of ExcellenceKTN
This latest competition will award up to £30 million to build regional centres of excellence for the development, prototyping and scale-up of power electronics, machines and drives (PEMD) technologies.
This competition aims to provide funding to establish the centres, building on existing capabilities and expertise where it already exists across the UK. The centres will support the industrialisation of PEMD technologies to help accelerate the growth of the UK’s supply chains for PEMD. The centres must be open access facilities that support the development, prototyping and scaling of PEMD technologies and manufacturing processes.
ISCF funding will support:
- The investment in capital equipment needed to create the centres
- Funding for operational costs to enable the centres to become established up to the end 31 March 2024
Details from the competition scope will be posted on Innovate UK’s website during October. The competition will open on 21st October. The Innovate UK pages will include all the details potential applicants need to know, including dates for submissions.
The Driving the Electric Revolution Challenge was launched in July 2019 by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy as part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF). Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

33. 4.How does it leave the
education & skills system?
5.What do you think?
Steve Besley
34. The shape of the new system 1/2
• Focused on what works and what delivers
• Collaboration driven by function, need and efficiency as
much as by policy and ideology
• Increased reliance on data (performance and labour
market)
• More transparent forms of accountability (national, local,
institutional)
• Burden of fees shifted to individuals, Government support
restricted to the needy
• Regulation aimed at qual suppliers and monitored against
international performance measures
• Learning programmes built around core subjects, greater
choice beyond that
35. The shape of the new system 2/2
• Providers seen as agents of change for engagement,
participation and social mobility
• School improvement a mixture of external levers (choice,
competition, accountability) and internal structures
(leaders, auditors, teachers)
• 14-16, 16-19 two distinct phases within one all-through
phase where specialisation defines the nature of
progression
• FE continuing to provide traditional pipeline of skilled
workforce but within more competitive market place
• HE becoming more diverse in response to user funding
• White knuckle ride as Government seeks to effect
transformation within one term
