This document summarizes a presentation given by Louis Coiffait of Reform Think Tank on making the most of school staff. It discusses challenges like rising teacher vacancies, especially in certain subjects and regions. It proposes three solutions: reforming teacher training funding from recruitment bursaries to retention rewards; establishing regional Workforce Boards to develop tailored workforce strategies; and growing more schools groups to provide career development and centralized support for staff. The full research report with 15 recommendations will be released later in the month.

Based on the McKinsey school system improvement framework, this document attempts to share the experiences of Hackney school governors, with a development journey specifically for governors. Current narratives in HE are moving beyond a narrow focus on securing employment for students to include them developing a wider and more holistic set of 'attributes'. This brief presentation summarises this trend and explore some of the challenges and future trends that may result.

I just had the opportunity of presenting at the inaugural 'World Congress on Access to Post-Secondary Education' in Montreal. It was my first attempt at a synthesis of four projects that the Pearson Think Tank is involved in; on rising tuition fees, school-based careers guidance, university admissions and open education data. In different ways all of these projects explore the 'wicked problem' (complex, evolving and interdependent) of fair access to higher education.
The work highlights three of the common barriers that restrict fair access to higher education;
1) Information asymmetry
2) Unequal distribution of resources
3) Variable and sometimes unequal access
As well as three potential solutions that have been developed over the course of the projects:
1) Deliver truly personalised information and support
2) Develop sustainable local learning ecosystems
3) Make appropriate use of open data
This is an emerging strand of thinking so please do share your feedback.
This is a slowly evolving presentation I'm working on that attempts to explore future trends for higher education. The first half uses secondary data and charts to explore issues such as demography and development. The second half then looks at some responses by the sector with suggestions for considerations in the future. It is based on my experience with the Blue Skies project (http://pearsonblueskies.com/) editing over 60 articles by leading authors from around the world - each sharing their vision of the future for HE. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
