PRESENTATION ON
TEMPERATURE & SHRINKAGE EFFECT ON
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
Introduction:
The deformation of structure can be

occurred by stresses caused by external
loads. But deformation & volume changes
can also occur without any external loading.
The most important of these are shrinkage
& temperature effect.
Structure mainly two types:
1.R.C.C Structure:

2. Steel Structure:
Reasons for shrinkage:
1.By evaporation of water.
2.Drying of concrete.
3.Increasing of temperature
Temperature & Shrinkage effect:
1.It may cause deleterious crack as in

slabs,walls etc.
2.In structure that are statically
indeterminate & most concrete structure, it
may cause large & harmful stresses.
3.It may cause deformation of total
structure.
4.It may affect to the fixed joint.
Cracks due to temperature &
shrinkage effect:
Crack in wall:
Shrinkage in an unrestrained reinforced
concrete member :
Shrinkage in a restrained reinforced
concrete member :
Due to accident massive change in
temperature of the structure causes
the fall of twin tower:
Matter of concern during
design:
1. Careful during selection of material
2.By analysing previous weather report.
3.By analysing previous max temperature record.
4. By predicting the future condition.
5.The coefficient of thermal expansion &

contraction should be within the allowable range.
6.By increasing aggregate content.
7.By adjusting water content.
8.Careful curing is needed.
